"id Software today announced that it has begun production on Doom 4, and is now in the process of expanding its internal team of developers to work on the shooter sequel.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a release.

"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

The company is currently accepting applications to fill job openings covering roles such as producer, lead designer, and lead animator, among others.

The job listings page indicates that applicable platforms for the positions are PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Though no further details on the game were released, the studio will likely make use of its new id Tech 5 engine for the project.

id Software lead artist Kevin Cloud recently told Shacknews that one of the strengths of the company's new engine is its cross-platform performance.

"You don't even have to worry about how it's going to look on PS3 or 360. Right now we've got it running cross-platform running 60 hertz, and it looks really good," said Cloud. "In terms of what artists are available to achieve--it's something you have to see for yourself. I can say this, but you still won't get it until you see it."

id will be hosting the 13th annual QuakeCon convention on July 31."

I am definitely looking forward to hearing more about this title.

Alright, I've pulled myself together and want to say this... if the game is NOT the true successor to Doom II: Hell on Earth and does NOT faithfully recreate the swarming hordes of enemies with the very much fulfilling weapon and death animations, it will be a complete and utter failure. Survival horror Doom was cool for a little while but they need to go back to the roots of the series, the "DNA" they spoke of and make it work, if not, then scrap the project and let the name die peacefully and unadulterated.

I suppose you are right. Personally, I want to see this game do something like what Half-Life 2 did back then. Do something truly revolutionary and yet stick to the roots. Easier said than done, I am sure, but I can only hope.

Huh, I thought it was better than Doom3. Teh cube was awesome.

They had a grav-gun in the original Doom3 during developement, it was a tool they used to throw the objects while building the levels, if I remember correctly.

I think Resurrection of Evil was far superior to Doom 3. They didn't "rip off" Half Life 2, they took what Half Life 2 did well and made it better by having the Grabber used as a fully defensive and offensive weapon. It isn't "ripping something off" if you make it better and more enjoyable. ;)

That and there was the Super Shotgun... any game with a gun like that deserves high praise.

If you want a game like doom 1 and doom 2 today, then play painkiller :)

Personally i love all 3 doom games, and its expansion. I liked the direction doom 3 took.

What im hoping for doom 4 is that its set on earth in a very terminator like apocalypitic setting, and then throw in the hell knight monsters :)

i second that

something similar to left 4 dead in terms of the amount of enemies would be nice...instead of giving you 2-3 enemies at once, give us 20-30....and lots of guns and ammo like the first ones...and i want the health meter of the first, the face that slowly gets more beaten up as you go...that was just awesome :P

They actually had the idea for that gravity gun before Valve did. Back when RoE was new and people took swipes at it for its gravity gun being a copy of HL2's, people showed links from which you could garner id had the concept for such a device before Valve had. Wish I could remember the details, but it was a long time ago. Anyway, more than likely, both companies just coincidentally came up with a gravity weapon on their own around the same time, pretty plausible when you consider physics were relatively newer back then and it wouldn't have been hard for a developer to conclude that something revolutionary in that department would be a good idea.

On reflection, I did think the change of style from Doom 3 was a good move. If it had played like the original Doom, or even Painkiller, I might not have finished it because I'm not as interested in pure run-and-gun games any more.

Setting on earth would actually be a good idea, especially if they are using Id Tech 5. Open up the environments, maybe an over-run city or something.

I do think they should ramp up the pace a bit and get away from the corridor crawls. Doom 3 was decent, but the corridor crawl and 'jump-out-and-boo' scares got old quite fast. A lot more (and smarter) enemies on screen at once would help.

Anyway, it's good to see another potentially good title in the pipeline.

Can't say I want any shooter to resemble the original Dooms. Don't get me wrong, I loved those games back in the day, but mindless running and gunning is kinda passe today (if I remember the gameplay correctly). That's why I never played Serious Sam or Painkiller, not my cup of tea.

Not that Doom 3 was the best thing since sliced bread, but I enjoyed it. Good game. Almost made me **** my pants sometimes. Nothing like meeting that huge Demon while playing on a TV with surround sound all the way up. Awesome and scary as hell. Can't say Doom or Doom 2 ever gave me such a jaw dropping experience.

I want Doom 4 to do something completely different this time around, not go back to the roots of the series (the nostalgia-factor is too huge to ever please the older fans) or continue with the BOH!-scares. Give me something that's a little more freeroamish (not Oblivion-like, but at least make big, non-linear levels), has a great, scary atmosphere (a la System Shock 2) and please, for the love of God, give me a story. A good one too, not the typical braindead crap FPS-makers cram into games.

I just hope they don't follow in the footsteps of Quake 4 by going with a "little-bit step-up from Doom 3" concept. They should start again from scratch like they did for Doom 3, and set the benchmark again for future shooter games. Right now, i'm anticipating Farcry 2 a bit more than Doom 4, but who knows....

I want to see this game go in a new direction as well. I mean, Doom 3 was different from the previous games. Some people liked it and some didn't. However it tired to be different.

Ideally Doom 4 will have an open ended gameplay, and feature a lot more variety in the levels. That would be fantastic. Even a linear game would be a lot of fun provided it's done right, like Half-Life 2, but I think it would be great if the players are given certain options on how they choose to play it.

My recent experience with The Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom with Skulltag on the higher difficulties was incredibly jaw-dropping. Especially when I started playing the Skulltag "survival" levels with over 500 enemies on screen at a time and weapon mods like the "spreader."

Based on their past games, that would be quite a change for id. Not that I wouldn't welcome it with open arms, but I'm dubious they will go that far. Who knows, if they get the right people on board and a couple of good writers who actually know about how make a good story (and pace it right), they couold deliver something on par with Half-Life.

More Doom, or Doom 3, probably won't fly a couple of years down the line though, so they're going to have to change the formula somehow.

Definitely. The expectations and standards have changed, especially after games like Bioshock and Crysis.

So I would love to see this compete and win against the likes of those games. After all for me, there is no better developer than id software.

Hopefully it delivers like 3 did...just in a different way. It would also be really neat to see them get the atmosphere working like STALKERs. That would make the game so much scarier, not that the atmosphere was terrible in 3.
