Hey,

I have read that to play games on Steam, you need to have an internet connection at the time you want to play. I have used Direct2Drive, and it seems as if on there, once the game is installed, you don't need an internet connection to play. Are these statements true?

-Thanks

Nope. Like it works the same as direct 2 drive. Only have to connect when installing.

That's only half right. You CAN put Steam into offline mode where you no longer need an internet connection to play, but you will need to connect to the Steam servers to do this in the first place. Offline mode has it's share of problems however, so it is much easier to just stay online and let it connect to the Steam servers every time you play.

Not quite right either. Excusing my horrible typing in my first post, if you try to start Steam and it is unable to connect, it will ask you if you want to run Offline mode or quit. Like I said, you only "have" to connect the first time installing and running it, afterward it will attempt to connect by default, but it isn't necessary to connect again.

if all other things are equal, I'd suggest buying of D2D. Even if you can get into Steam in offline, it's still using resources. The only possible exception is a game that might get a lot of mods, as the encryption on D2D can prevent you from playing some of them (but then the disc-based version would be best).

Bcuz some people may not have the internet at home, but like to download games from Steam at friend's house or somethin', then bring the laptop home to play the Steam games offline...... make sense?

I've never managed to get that to work. Whenever I've tried, it's just said that it can't connect to the steam servers (once I've clicked on Offline Mode) and then just quit. Setting it to go offline after I've already gone online still works though/

I'm not cutting down Steam or D2D, but there are some alternatives. Stardock's Impulse, it doesn't have to be running in the background to play a game (unless you want it to count how many times you run it). And GamersGate's slogan is "Download anywhere, anytime."

same here, which is why I prefer impulse and gamersgate.

No. Not having internet does not make sense. It is, in this day and age, as critical as having electricity and running water.
