I gave it a thumbs down because of the annoying teenage guy at the start promoting his website.

Dude this is ooold news. The devs said that what we saw is just the exagerration part of the framed narrative. All the blood and and exploding heads is just over the top storytelling by the dwarf Varric. Cassandra, the chick he's telling the story to then cuts him off, after which you begin to play the game DAO style. Only the movement speed is pretty much changed..Hawke and companions charge into battle rather than shuffling like the characters in DAO. Combat is being improved..PC gamers get combat similar to DAO and console gamers get combat more suited to gamepads, like pressing a button makes Hawke swing etc.

Interesting, so you think they're going to have two different combat animations for every move, two models for all equipment, two animations for blood (This is the same company that said it was to much work to give the Darkspawn Black blood which would have been lore friendly), and two texture decals for blood splatters. Because that's what gets implied when people talk about these exaggerated scenes.

No, there is only gonna be ONE exagerration scene and that is at the beginning of the game. This is just the devs showcasing a one time over-the top gameplay just because in people's story in the game, Hawke is somewhat of a legendary figure who could destroy foes with a touch of his blade. It's playing into the whole champion of kirkwall theme. This exagerrated part is just people's wild stories visualized.

You sure? I thought I remember BioWare saying there would be multiple scenes throughout the story that get "exaggerated" when Varric feels like screwing with Casandra's head.

Hey you're right. I found this from an interview with DA2's lead designer, Mike Laidlaw:

"The key effect that our narrators have on the story is that of reinforcing for the player how the world sees Hawke," picks up Laidlaw. "The Champion of Kirkwall has become a legendary figure, but much of the legend is obscured in myth, and while people know the highlights, the details are fuzzy. To highlight this, we'll occasionally, and especially at the beginning of the game, show you the Hawke people think of, the legendary figure who could destroy his foes with a single swing of a blade. The sequences are deliberately over-the-top, and a hell of a lot of fun, but they're also very key bits of foreshadowing, hinting to the player what's to come."

source

So the exagerrations are gonna happen every now and then. This framed narrative thing is unusual for an RPG but BioWare's gonna tell a great story regardless. Anyways it should be fun blasting our way through darkspawn and anything else that is dumb enough to stand in Hawke's way

Checked the infos. There will be multiple scenes over the course of the game with Varic's exaggerations, with repeated "stop screwing with me" from Cassandra, as the entire story is told by Varic in past tense. Overall, it's obvious that video is from a console version, and there is still very little to go on. I would like to see the PC version in action first. Also, Dalish elves will speak with a Welsh accent. Totally true.

lol yeah I heard that over at the DA2 forums, From what the devs say, DA2 for the PC is gonna have some form of tactical combat implemented and the auto-attack feature from DAO is still there. Console gamers get an option to use auto-attack via radial menu but the default is button mashing for them. The devs are always stressing that the PC and console versions are being developed separately, which is good to hear.

Yeah that's true with the dialogue wheel and the named, voiced protagonist and all. But everything else is stuff we love about DAO. To me the lore is what drives the whole series just as with Mass Effect.

First of all that wasent leaked... and second they're blowing up because it's a demo. It won't be that easy when the game comes out this was all explained.

The game is still turn based like the last one, they just added more animations and lowered damage so that fights can look more exciting.

I still think they should've... Y'know, kept Dragon Age as Dragon Age... Mass Effect can be the new-agey "RPG", and Dragon Age can remain the original, true RPG that fans want. I think BioWare just wants to phase that out like it's a dead art. :? Don't get me wrong, I love Mass Effect. Hell, I even love the dumbed-down RPG elements of Mass Effect 2, more! But Mass Effect was ALWAYS the style that it was. Dragon Age was one thing, and now it feels like we're getting a spiritual successor to it, not an actual sequel.dreDREb13
Read what I said in my comments. The combat has not changed just the visual style. It's still the same as the first Dragon Age ( turn based ) but they made the turns shorter and reduced the damage to make it look more real.

Yeah I totally agree with you. I wish they had continued the series with DAO's old school RPG style. It's my understanding that PC gamers loved DAO and the console gamers, whiny as they are, wanted the game to be more gamepad friendly. This could be one of the reasons they changed stuff a bit in the sequel. Curse you consoles! *shakes fist*

It's not really turn based, more like auto-attack. Well that's true for PC anyway. Consoles however, get Hawke to swing with the press of a button.

The more information released about this game the worse it looks. From the ridiculous pre-order nonsense to the "press a button and something awesome happens" console tripe. I don't even think I'll be picking this up when it hits the bargain bin. Way to destroy everything that was decent about the first game Bioware!

It's funny but DA:O was Bioware's best selling game and they achieved that (I think) by throwing a small bone to the old-time RPG crowd and now, for some reason, they seem determined to alienate that same group. It makes no sense whatsoever. Personally, I hope this game fails and then maybe, just maybe, Bioware will get the message that not everyone wants a "streamlined" RPG aimed at 13 year-olds Xbox owners.

-wildflower-

i agree, i also think they are making every game a copy, from the interviews is like they are doing mass effect medieval version, and they think everything has to be action instead of good old rpg and strategy game

Except that it's still a RPG strategy game... stop spreading these damn rhumors everywhere. The combat still works with a auto attack/turn based style just like DAO1.

Yes. Prexxus is right. Core gameplay is still the same. Instead of complaining check out the DA2 forums at BioWare social network. The devs are really active there. Check out this stickied post on what we know so far:

Cease this mindless bloodshed men! Lay down your arms! Bioware mean you no harm!

Read this from GI:

Another change – and this might be the biggest – is that only the PC version will retain Origins' "strategic combat". The console versions will feature a new combat system, one BioWare says plays to the strength of the control pad. "Rather than try to mimic the PC experience on consoles," the GI report states, "Dragon Age II has a battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360."

It's not the combat I hate, it's everything else. Why force us into playing one damn character with a voice? Why do we absolutely HAVE to have a voiced main character? There's nothing wrong with a silent character. :? People survived KotOR and Dragon Age. And what's more? They loved them.dreDREb13

Yes, because Oblivion/Fallout 3/New Vegas/Dragon Age/ KotOR I and II were SO horrible to play without hearing my pre-chosen character talk for me. All I'm saying is, why completely abandon it? Hell, BioWare is even making our characters in the MMO talk! Freaking MMO CHARACTERS!

I like that RPGs have people that talk....gives them more character...

I'll admit I played the console version first... >_> Then I played the PC and OH, MY GOD the difference was so subtle, and yet it made the game 10 times better, somehow.

I totally agree. The first thing I noticed was the graphics, of course lol. It was 10 times better for me as well. I'm probably in the minority but I actually like the new combat style. It's definitely more dynamic but I hope it doesn't play like a Dynasty Warriors game (no offense). I have faith that BioWare wouldn't let that happen. In this case, there's more to it then we think it is. It's a short little gameplay vid and we have no clue how the game actually plays.

Worked for the Mass Effect series. DAO also had a LOTR epic-journey kinda feel.

By "interactive movie" did he mean games like Heavy Rain (PS3) and Indigo Prophecy? I actually loved those games!

Yup! Man I remembered Indigo Prophecy, games like those have scripts you'll only find in movies! Same goes for most of the BioWare games. If you actually hide the UI in BioWare games like the dialogue wheel etc. and watch a video of the game from start to finish, it plays out like a 50+ hour movie. (Which would be tedious to watch but fun to play! :P)

Well I guess I'm complaining about the damn dialogue wheel and forced character.dreDREb13

It is kind of strange how the first game made such a massive deal of the whole "hey look guys, your characters start off with different origin stories!" thing, and now they've completely abandoned that.

Well, at least this is combat in the console versions and not the PC versions. The PC version combat will be the same as the prequel.

It is kind of strange how the first game made such a massive deal of the whole "hey look guys, your characters start off with different origin stories!" thing, and now they've completely abandoned that.

It might have to do with the fact that how you started didnt affect the gameplay that much once you left your origin story. Still, I can see where you are going with that. It is a huge jump from being able to choose our character's origin (which I really liked for that matter) to just being this one character who we can change name and gender of. But then again, being able to choose your character's origin was hardly new in DAO. The first game that I played where you could choose a origin independent from class was City of Heroes.

Not that I'm expecting this game to be amazing by any means, but, I find it hillarious that like 20 seconds of intro gameplay is enough for everyone to bash the game and assume they know everything about it.

where in the heck is my isometric view? Say all you want but this is a game consolized. Fortunatelly we have The witcher 2. Grim dawn ( from titan quest devs ) and Torchlight 2 for 2011 and Diablo 3 if that makes it to 2011

Dragon Age 2 will be the RPG of the year, just like the previous installment. You can quote me on this -- this game will rock.

I need to see more of the game before I make any buying decisions.

Origins remains my favorite RPG this gen, other then The Witcher.

It's going to rock. People are jumping the gun with this leaked gameplay footage and they're screaming hack n slash. :P More than meets the eye.
