I don't get this.

All I see is another way to annoy a loyal customer and fanbase.its to try and combat piracy, atleast its better than what some other companies are doing.

How does this combat piracy in anyway? Honestly man. And TC do you have a link?its to try and combat piracy, atleast its better than what some other companies are doing.
TerroRizing
how can you combat piracy with a 7$ dungeon? They just make me hold my purchase until they release a "gold" edition with all the dlc contents (because I bet they are planning to release several more in the near future, if they start on day 1 with one)its to try and combat piracy, atleast its better than what some other companies are doing.
TerroRizing
well also you get 2 other dlcs free if you buy a new copy ;)
apart from that little bump, I must admit that its very early for DLC.
I think this is to ensure Gamers that they do intend to produce DLC, and not like the Mass Effect fiasko with 1 dlc for several years (2nd first surfacing now).
To be fair Bioware did say that they fully intended to build upon Dragon age, and that several of thier devs were working on stuff in thier freetime, I guess that is some of what we are seeing right now.
It is a fairly cheap dlc, and it does look good... The standard for DLC aint very good tho, with fallout 3 delivering the best sofar if I remember correctly, if this is on par with that I dont have any real problem with it
I have to agree with you. Copies bought new will have a code to download the content, otherwise you have to buy it, then there is some content that adds to the game (I think that was $15?). At any rate, it's to boost sales of new copies and discourage used sales, and to give you an incentive to own the game instead of pirating it, since you'll have to get the content online. I'm sure it's also to make a quick buck too, but come on folks. Do you want limited installs and online activations, or do you want additional DLC you have to pay for if you own the game? It's not like you have to buy it if you don't want it.its to try and combat piracy, atleast its better than what some other companies are doing.

Or do you really think that pirates won't be able to get the DLC because it has to be downloaded? Anyway, new copies won't include any codes. On the main page it clearly states that the DLC will not be included in the Speciel Edition of the game. Only in some Super Special Downloadable Edition.

Doubt I will buy the game. Not simply because of this but it leaves one to wonder if day one content can be put out for this game just how much does it have and how much did they cut?

Whiteblade999
this...if Bioware from now on uses Mass Effect's main story line as the standard length of their products...then there should be tons of side, brenched quests can be cut from DA:O. He.l, all those barren planets in ME can be cut off and become DLCs.
as for the piracy thing, pirates will get all DLCs in the hard disk rip version in the future. those who will buy in to any hype and don't have the patience to wait it out for some DLCs are simply accidental or "casual" pirates.
First ill play through the original game..Than ill get the dlc..It will take me a few weeks the way i play to finish dragon age any how..Dont see no biggie on this one..Just buy it when your ready..
free or not, they are advertising for DLC a month (or more?) prior to the game's official release date? it means that these DLCs are all ready and might as well be part of the main game. guess this is the new PR route for the next gen games~~:
where does this term "DLC" come from anyway, being a PC gamer all my life and never heard of it until recently.

DLC(down loadable content) is the term they used for small offical add-ons on consoles.
It doesn't mean they are ready as of now, and that is probably an issue. If they are not done, it would mean additional QA would have to take place, and DA is going to have to go gold i'd think within a couple of weeks.free or not, they are advertising for DLC a month (or more?) prior to the game's official release date? it means that these DLCs are all ready and might as well be part of the main game. guess this is the new PR route for the next gen games~~:

don't care how the fans pimp it - day one dlc = scam and you have to get over my dead body to have me pay for that crap. $7? i wouldn't even pay 7 cents so dream on, Bioware.

Okay I do, it is a nickel and dime money grab. The problem is in the end it's only going to end up hurting them more because the level headed, smart, money conscience fans will wait wait till they release a gold edition with all the DLC included. You know, we are living in a recession....its to try and combat piracy, atleast its better than what some other companies are doing.

Fixed... dude this is the PC board. I know where you are coming from but much of it doesnt really concern us, the modders wont be too far behind I hope

That depends on how easily it is to mod the game and if they decide to release an SDK or not.[QUOTE="illmatic87"][QUOTE="kilaan"]This, I have no idea why they are doing this. That depends on how easily it is to mod the game and if they decide to release an SDK or not. There is a full tool set (like NWN), its already in beta.DLC in general makes me sick and reeks of greed but having it available on the very first day the game ships takes it to a whole new level. Gosh, with every passing day I just love the Xbox Generation more and more, especially with all these wonderful "innovations" they've brought to PC gaming.
I already posted in the announcement thread for this, but I'll post here as well. They are releasing 3 DLCs and apparently two of them are free, but I don't think this move has anything to do with piracy, and everything to do with preventing second-hand sales. Or at least making second-hand games less palatable.
I can see their reasoning behind this - to try and 'sweeten' the deal if you buy the game brand new. Fair enough, because they're in business to make money, and I know some of these second-hand game outlets can hurt the number of 'new' units shifted. Maybe it will help to combat that problem, maybe it won't.
However, by charging for one of these day one DLCs, they are setting a dangerous precedent, especially if gamers accept it. The next time they release a game, they could release two bits of DLC you have to pay for...and so on. Maybe this DLC was a side project, as they say, but will that be the case in the future? Will some other developers simply chose to cut content from a game deliberately, and then release it as DLC on day one to nickel and dime their target audience? How will we know in future if we're simply being duped? This is opening yet another can of worms, imo.
Of course, the thing they have obviously overlooked is that the original purchaser of the game may choose not to download any DLC at all, and still sell the game on with the codes for DLC intact. That might be rare, but it could happen.
You have two options, get the Collector's Editon retail and get two of them, or get the digital version and get all of them for free to compensate for the lack of the cloth map and metal box (as they say).
Anyway, this DLC sounds interesting but even tho I will be getting the CE, I won't get the digital version just for this DLC, I prefer retail.
I hate DLC.
thusaha
I think this sums it up quite nicely.
Personally I would rather take a full fledged expansion to a boat load of DLC.
seeing all these people who will gladly pay for - or even defend - these shameless DLCs that should've been part of the full game is trully baffling. remember the MW2 $60 dollar pricetag people whine so furiously about? yep. Bioware shows us how by playing that trick a little differently you can not only make money, but also make it with style. i'm bloody impressed.

Looks like it's academic for purchasers in the UK at least. On both Amazon.co.uk and Play.com there are no Collectors Editions listed at all, and only if you place a preorder do you get some additions. Amazon preorders will net you a ring called 'Memory Band' and a pair of boots called 'Lion's Paw'. Play.com has the 'Memory Band' and 'Feral Wolf Charm' for pre-orders only. No mention of other DLC, Blood Armour, or anything else.
I guess we should be used to getting shafted over here by now...

Don't know, I just saw some ads for preorders and they should all be the same, but maybe they changed the items that they give. Anyway the normal edition gets all those items except that side story and it also gets the armor (shouldn't be, but that's what I saw in their description) that can also be used in ME 2, the CE gets 3 new, exclusive items + those regular ones, the armor and the first DLC, and the digital CE (for those interested in the "whole" pack, all the items, armor, the first DLC and this 7$ DLC), sadly, is sold only on the eastore, for now hopefully.[QUOTE="thusaha"]

I've never bought any DLC, probably won't. I don't see the problem here though, DA is likely going to be huge, will have a ton of community content, and this content was not "stripped" from the game, it was a side development. Sure they probably could have put it in, especially the PC version, but this was being developed specifically as DLC content. Don't buy it if you don't like it.seeing all these people who will gladly pay for - or even defend - these shameless DLCs that should've been part of the full game is trully baffling.
Jinroh_basic
Prove it, prove that it "should" have been in teh main game, and it isnt something that was made purely for this purpose, and wouldnt have existed if it wasnt DLC.
Oh ya, no one ever can, they just assume.
Its not a way to combat piracy. DLC can still be pirated, hackers always from away from cracking a disc to private servers. All this does it hurt your loyal fanbase. Me I won't be getting this 7$ for a 1 maybe 2 hours of gameplay is definitely not worth it
3 dlcs i think...anyway if you ask me id rather have that content in the game instead of paying extra?
However if the price is eg 40 and not 60 then i think its ok, i mean people still wouldnt buy it if those were in the game and the game was 60!!
I dont think it does anything against piracy, fallout 3 dlcs have been pirated.
I think they try to do something like neverwinter nights 1 and 2 and its expansions but in the form of dlcs.
