Which one should I get? Is it worth getting a quad core now? I am going to get an AMD one, so should I get a dual-core and then upgrade to a quad core later? How long will a dual core last me? Do games even use multi-core processors yet making a quad core overkill? I am not going to be doing much multitasking, so will a dual core be enough for gaming?

Well, the Phenom II X4 processors are a tremendous value for quad core processors and I would recommend one of those highy. There are other benefits to quad core. Do you ever do image manipulation (Photoshop)? Ever convert videos to put on your iPod, Zune, PSP? Convert audio formats? Use WinRar a lot?

So it makes those programs and other tasks you do faster? So is the Phenom II X4 2.6 GHz for $140 a good value?

I have the triple-core black edition Phenom 2.

Its a happy medium. (I too was undecided on 2 or 4 cores) ;)

This processor kicks ass, and its a great value.

As 2009 continues on, dual cores are slowly losing their importance for being faster than quadcores in clock speeds now that more and more programs are becoming multithreaded. Not to mention, alot of people would end up getting involved in media work one way or another.

Ok, I will go for the quad-core. It will future-proof me a little anyway. More then a dual-core. Thanks for helping me make up my mind XD

While many apps themselves wont utilize all 4 cores as long as you have an OS that recognizes a quad core configuration then your background tasks will provide less of a hit on your gaming experience.

Quad Core will provide a bit more longetivity for the future. Also Quad is faster for video and audio encoding. Upgraded from C2D E8500 to Quad 9650 and notice things running slightly smoother, especially with multiple tasks. Awaiting the new Intel i9 with a massive 6 cores.

photoshop does not support more than 2 cores, same goes with most of the apps you listed. quad is for video and rendering, few other apps can use quads. if you are buying a system now though I'd go with a quad, the phenom 2 are great value.

Wow didn't even know they were making an i9. Just did a little research and it seems they will be making some new i7s aswell for early next year. Knowing this why would anyone even bother with core i5s?

If you will be purely gaming than a E8x00 series dual-core will be more than adequate. However, if you are going to be multitasking then I would get a quad. When going for a quad, do not go for anything less than a Q9x00 in Intel and a Phenom II in AMD.
