Yeah I loved that game, played it through like 100 times, still remmeber all the secret places and stuff 10 years later. Reminds me also how little fps games have developed other than graphically.EntwineXAhh memories. For it's day 1996, this was state of the art and brilliant.. I was 19 when it came out and I still play it occasionally. Sadly the Duke franchise has become a joke with the 10 year "development period" on DN:Forever. I just wish 3D Realms would say, "It's not coming" instead of keeping all the investors/fans waiting for nothing.
Oh man... this bring back good memories... I remember having a pentium 133 with 8 megs of ram... I was able to play almost any game back in the day. Duke 3d, Doom 1 and 2 and several LucasArts games were always installed on my hard drive!!!
Definitely, nice memories...
This was an amazing game. Pretty much introduced me to PC gaming, too; one of the first PC games I bought. I also spent AGES tinkering away on Build - made some pretty decent levels, too!
I also remember the PC: a P75 with 8meg of RAM and an 850Mb hard drive... wowza! And Windows 3.11, too!
But... since when was Duke Nukem 3D actually 3D? Take a look.Lilac_Benjie
Duke Nukem 3D
Brilliant level design right there. But... since when was Duke Nukem 3D actually 3D? Take a look.

Oh my god, it's exactly the way I remember it. And I was 5-7 when I played the game.
Man I loved that game so much...
The same rooftop, the same fall with the health-potion in the buttom... and the rest of the level... :P
Neat, played that so much. Remember that beach party addon? That was hilarious. :)

I think they should release it for Xbox Live Arcade, like they did with Doom.
Or maybe just pull their finger out and release DNF...

I found it to be great as a kid. Not so much these days though. I don't think Duke makes much of an action hero anymore like I used to think we was. I don't think he would be as popular now as much as he was back in those days.
EndersAres
Besides Halo's Master Chief, please name another FPS action hero. Let me do it for you... you can't.

Ummm... let me think....
Gordon Freeman, the Doom Marine, Duke Nukem, BJ Blazkowitz...

Well I never even considered Gordon because I looked at him as a nerd in power suit. Sorry, you're not a hero, you're just a nerd in a suit. BJ, Doom Marine, Doom Soldier and Doom janitor are all the same type of guy in different locations. They are comprised of no substance, no character, NO NOTHING.

If you're discounting Freeman because he's a "nerd in a suit", and discounting the likes of the Doom Marine because they're all two-dimensional characters, what exactly is your definition of an action hero? If it's a protagonist whose character is evident throughout the game, then Duke is surely a candidate, or Cate Archer from No One Lives Forever; if it's a protagonist whose character transcends the game - that is, they are seen outside of it - then surely someone like Samus Aran or maybe even Joanna Dark fits the bill? I'm assuming you're excluding JC Denton because Deus Ex is an RPG, and Marcus Fenix because technically Gears is third-person...
Anyway, one could argue that the best character in a game is a blank one, a canvas which the player fills with their own character... but I fear I may be getting a wee bit too serious here! :)
For the record, I would say Gordon Freeman is one of the greatest game heroes of all time, but hey, that's me... I'm bespectacled nerd myself ;)

What makes Master Chief so special? All you see him is inside that green suit and you don't even see the outside of him. He doesn't talk that much and he is just another soldier. M$ made him popular through the xbox marketing scheme and so that is why all gamers know who he is.Please Log In to post.
