[QUOTE="EndersAres"]I found it to be great as a kid. Not so much these days though. I don't think Duke makes much of an action hero anymore like I used to think we was. I don't think he would be as popular now as much as he was back in those days.

Besides Halo's Master Chief, please name another FPS action hero. Let me do it for you... you can't.

Umm Gordon Freeman?

Well I never even considered Gordon because I looked at him as a nerd in power suit. Sorry, you're not a hero, you're just a nerd in a suit. BJ, Doom Marine, Doom Soldier and Doom janitor are all the same type of guy in different locations.  They are comprised of no substance, no character, NO NOTHING.

What makes Master Chief so special? All you see him is inside that green suit and you don't even see the outside of him. He doesn't talk that much and he is just another soldier. M$ made him popular through the xbox marketing scheme and so that is why all gamers know who he is.

Master Chief gained character from his cutscenes. The last Halo3 trailer alone showed how much of a badass he is.

Duke Nukem 3D

Brilliant level design right there. But... since when was Duke Nukem 3D actually 3D? Take a look.

I played that back in the day of PII 300 MHz CPUs - and I hated it. But it sounds like that's just me.

Gordon is a nerd.. okay.. Adrian Shepard.. :P Barney Calhoun? -- Opposing Force and Blue Shift respectively

How aboout Kyle Kartan.. from Dark Forces I. A straight FPS made around the same time as Duke.. I think, if I remember correctly.. pre-Duke3D :)

Also, Duke was originally a side scrolling character.. Manhattan Project went back to that formula.. so based on your accounts.. Duke ISN'T really a FPS character but a side scroller.. and thus should be compared to other characters like Commander Keen :)

its kinda sad that we havent gotten that far in FPS games, only graphically. Duke 3D got me hooked on gaming and i still have my copy of the game and i tried the game again not to long ago and was actually stunned and how much stuff you could play around with in the environment, the interactivity in Duke 3D havent even been beaten yet in any fps game to date, prey had a small amount of that in the beginning of the game in the bar but that stuff went away when you got aboard the alien ship.

I agree. I think Chronicles of Riddick came close.. Doom 3 had some of that as well. True there are no strippers to give money to and ask "Do you want to dance", but and the whole bullet hole stayin in one place was introduced by Rise of the Triad along with the blood dripping down walls.. Duke 3D did that with slow moving blood or "smears". True, the environment was more physics oriented (in a way) but games have reproduced this in some fashion.. like in Red Faction. The large environments as well were also a big plus giving rise to strong DM (deathmatch) games. I had quite a bit of fun in multiplayer with Duke 3D..if it only had internet support I would probably still be playing it.. that along with Doom 2.. maps 13 n 15. :)

[wow how I can remember those maps.. I think I played those two maps too tooo often]

The map we played Duke 8-player Deathmatch on was L.A. Rumble. Never any other map. Keyboard only control and everything.

Yeah I got that mod for duke 3D. The only problem with it is that it takes away a lot of the visual style of the unmodded duke

master chief has no character. Please, no one should even be comparing him to gordon freeman.

Duke Nukem would be extremely popular still. Kicking ass, chewing bubblegum, hookers, guns, and 1-liners. I still.. to this day.. cannot figure out why ANYONE likes Halo? That game ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!!! its such a boring shooter, with a boring storyline, boring characters, boring weapons, and boring gameplay. Duke would put a bullet in Chief's head.

QFT Although if you're talking about the original halo I would disagree, but for halo 2 that statement is as true as it can get.

halo = good because of the multiplayer - it was awesome, but as far as the master chief goes, he is a horrible hero. Doom guy from the first two dooms + ultimate & final and BJ and Kyle Katarn, and, obviously, Duke Nukem, are the best heroes of all time. gordon freeman is a technician who happened to be at the right place in the right time - if he were still in the control room or walking to the john, he would have a headcrab for a skull and that would be that. Duke took matters into his own hand, grabbed a shotgun and a few hundred dollar bills, and went about ridding the galaxy of bad guys. Doom guy is the same, and BJ is the father of all action superstars - remember how he was in the first commerically-accepted FPS? (Ultima Underworld and a couple others came first, but they sucked - trust me; I've tried them). Only one, and let me say, it's a close one, action hero comes close to touching Duke: Judge Dredd. The only problem is the Judge has never had a decent action game to his credit. Serious Sam can also be a contender, but he is merely a conbobulation of Duke and Doom guy.

For PC it isn't that good, but in terms of consoles, halo was and is the best FPS available for that market.
