I have Windows XP Pro (SP2).

Will DX10 work OK with Win XP Pro?

Do I need to get Vista to get DX10 working?

Not to mention you will need a DirectX 10 graphics card to actually take advantage of the API.

It's either Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium - and I'm probably not getting it until next year...

I'll go for a mid-range Direct X10 card, too...

Mid-range in terms of speed and DirectX10 features. :D

I like plenty of memory on my GPUs...

I currently have AGP.

I'm getting a major upgrade later in the year or possibly next year...

Apparently, Nvidia are also releasing 8600 cards for AGP - so you might want to watch that space and see if any DX10 AGP cards are released.

If I get a brand new system, should I just go for PCI-E? Will PCI-E / PCI-E2 be all that's available in about a year?

That's notwithstanding the fact that some DirectX10 AGP GPUs might be released...

Not sure about PCI-E 2, but if you are getting a new system - definately get PCI-E.

EDIT: The 8600 AGP card (if there is one) would probably be the last generation of AGP graphics.

That's what people said about my 7800GS ;) I think they will put out an AGP card as long as there is $$$ to make. A lot of rigs out there are still holding Geforce 2 era graphics cards. Don't believe me? Check the steam hardware statistics samples from 12 months ago.

EDIT:  I can't find the older stats, but check these newer stats from Nov 2006.  The average user has an Nvidia 6600 or a 5200.  Those are AGP cards.  Not trying to convince anyone of anything other than the fact that AGP mobos are still LARGELY out there.
