Planning on building a computer this week... if I decide to get a DX11 video card when they come out soon, does that mean I also need to upgrade my motherboard? Will Vista support the new DX11 cards or is Windows 7 the only one that supports it?

I want to do my build, but I will wait if all the components I pick up now will be obsolete with DX11 around the corner...

i think it would be well worth the wait at the very least prices are gonna drop lower on current cards and the new cards looks to provide big gains ans all the dx11 features.

vista will support DirectX 11. Also you will not have to upgrade your motherboard but just as an FYI AMD will be releasing the new 800 series of motherboard chipsets soon which will give better performance with the DirectX 11 cards.

Vista wont support DX11, they'll be forcing a switch to 7 on release.

My misinformation? thats like saying dx10 builds upon dx9 so xp supports dx10. dx11 will be ONLY supported by 7. which is why many places are offering free 7 upgrades when purchasing vista. Because vista will become obsolete. and M$ will be slowly phasing out sales of Vista, much like they did with xp and vista.

Software giant Microsoft today revealed details concerning DirectX 11, the latest edition of its PC gaming graphics API.

Similar to DirectX 10, the software will be available only on Windows Vista and future versions of Microsoft's operating system. DirectX 11 will add new compute shader technology that Microsoft says will allow GPUs to be used "for more than just 3D graphics," allowing developers to utilize video cards as parallel processors.

DirectX 11 will support tessellation, a feature which can potentially assist developers in making models appear smoother when seen up close. Multi-threaded resource handling is also incorporated, making it easier for games to utilizemulti-core processors in a user's machine.

Microsoft also disclosed that DirectX 11 will add features to existing DirectX 10-compatible hardware, though it was not immediately clear what those features may be.

A launch date for the new software was not provided, though Microsoft is expected to release more information in the near future. The bullet points, as provided by Microsoft, are listed below.

  • Full support (including all DX11 hardware features) on Windows Vista as well as future versions of Windows
  • Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
  • New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor
  • Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
  • Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close

and that in theory is the Second Generation DX11 Card if it lauch that short sometime a generaration of video card can last 2 year before something better then a X2 Variant or +GB version exist or + Core such as 260 GTX 216 Core vs 260GTX such as for in 1 year they could go and release HD5850/5870/5890 then it usally end of the product lin) and come the Next Family such as HD5870 / GTX400 the cycle repeat..

but that just spectulation of the previous Era of video card : ATI HD could go at HD5900's with PCI-E 3.0 who know or updated HD5890 with PCI-E 3.0 instead of 2.0 & more SP / MHZ memory such as 2GB vs 1GB

+1 for logic, -1 for misinformation. It is different between DX9, 10 and 11. By the way, DX11 cards are hitting in September, not October. Darn I can't wait!

dx10 does not build upon dx9. Both APIs run alongside each other in Vista. Directx 10 is not backwards compatible with directx 9,8 etc. Directx 11 is backwards compatible with dx10. Big difference.

MS is offering free upgrades to Vista buyers because they don't want to lose OS sales because of people holding of a new OS purchase until after win 7 is released. It doesn't mean Vista will become obsolete any time soon. Current Vista owners will get continued support for several years after win 7 is out.

but in still several benchmark that show window 7 running with less fps then window vista SP2 The issue is maybe Driver because if you look there
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/windows7-drivers_5.html#sect1 in vast majority of game it does have less fps reason behind that !? unknow

as for i know id like to have the OS that as the better gaming performances then the OS that give me less performances if window 7 + Dx11 + new Driver = Better Then vista / Equal Vista in vast majority of game for 1920x1200 then il take Window 7 simple as that ? i don't like to be having a game that i have over 55fps become 49fps just because i switched of os since the game would be in DX9.C Because there not even more then 34 game at DX10 / 10.1

Vista not obsolete just unerperforming against window 7 according some people and they are several who recommend to user who use window vista With SP2 to Go With there Personal Free Release Canditate of Window 7 key and run on window 7 RC it Seem to be more stable as far i tryed window 7 on my ex computer it work pretty much Good and as far i heard of people

How Ever Id be interest of a review showing window 7 RC Vs Window 7 when it lauch in both Retail Box /Oem / Upgrade /Manufacturer id like to see it load time / game average fps / min fps / max fps / Graphic Driver used / and over 10 game tested to see if it get any difference of the one that you have a Free License until 2010 June (Not working anymore after that)

There Even a thing nvidia saying : SLI on Window 7 Offering more performances then XP Home / Pro by 10% while this sound like a obvious market selling trick by saying it would give more 10% then XP mean it better then vista because vista give less fps then XP in game test If you run the game that is suposse to be Everything include DX9.C / DX10 Dx 10.1 /

dx11 builds upon features already implemented in dx10. the way its going to work is DX10 cards can run dx11 with limited features. dx10.1 can run dx11 with some to most of the features enabled, and dx11 well you know.

its no wheres near the jump seen from 8 to 9 or 9 to 10 especially 9 to 10 which completely changed the hardware and software world.

Will these new cards require new power supplies? In other words will they use more power than the standard mid range graphics card?

that i understand that DX11 is a revolution in performances in theory any game that get a DX11 Patch even if the game was build DX10 the dev just need to patch it with game booster feature of DX11 = +20% FPS Gain by provide multi-tasking a feature only of DX11 While for current speaking of DX9.C VS DX10 to DX10.1 if you game on vista vs window 7 with current driver it show on x-bits lab : Vista run better DX 10/10.1 game B

but if you compare window 7 / window vista / window xp for game that are DX9.C (XP will give more fps even if you play at 1920x1200 + AA + AF)
But all game that will get DX11 Patch & boost Will run better then on XP In Theory just cause of the boost but the thing nvidia said on techpower & fudzilla is that They SAY DX9.C & DX10.1 GAME WILL RUN BETTER then on XP BY 10% without the DX11 PATCH! which sound obviously fool

because by say better then 10% they don't include DX11 Game Boost but just the Build of the Window 7 Retail + there chipset + there Driver + video card

That's just the typical marketing BS we get with every new directx release. Remember the MS people claimed directx 10 would be 600% faster than directx 9. Nonsense of course unless you look at one specific API command that is used in 0.1% of the time. No new directx version has ever made a game any faster. The simple point of having a newer directx 11 card will make a game that much faster compared to an older directx 10 card. A software patch can only do that much.

Even if it was the case, no developer would bother making directx 11 patches for already released directx 10 games.

but The Difference GoG is we Talk of Multi-Thread and unlike DX10 Xbits lab made a whole Coverage Gog Do you read new on xbits lab and techpower up & PChardware & other it all seem to show point where there would be a DX11 boosting from multi-thread 20% + post processing 25% total estimation of game possiblity boost from fps over 50% from having same DX10 Card Who are complient to Run With DX11 Transfering speed & memory I/O
Xbitslab DX11 NEWS over 80 word for the url

unlike DX10 which haven't made up any of those Feature in the White list / Thing that offer SM 4.0 Dx10/10.1 Along's over SM 3.0 (Direct x 9.C)
