I was originally planning on getting a Q9550, but then I realized I could save 160 dollars and get an E8400. I'm deciding between these two processors and I would like to know how they perform in games. Does anyone have a link to benchmarks or just recommendations? Thanks a lotclank120
Google.com Ha ha I couldn't resist, sorry dude.
i just upgraded from an e8400 to a Q9550
honestly, i love my Q9550, i liked my e8400, but i love the Q9550,
it overclocks just as easily, if not better, it performs well when playing a game and running background things, like music, and i have mine overclocked to 4ghz, same speed i was running my e8400 at, here is a link to my vantage scores, i know its not a real game, but its a good comparision of performance,

On what mobo ? Cooling (temps?) ? Could you send me your bios setting ?
I can't get mine stable higher than 3.2
Wha?!?! That doesn't sound right at all. I know every chip is different but you should definetly be able to go higher than that on a Q9550. What mobo are you using?

I can't say I've put a whole lot of time in trying to push it ... But it's on a gigabyte ep45-ds3
Its funny how people make buying decisions based on advice from totally random people.Peltz999It's funny how other people like to spend other peoples money.

Q9550 because you really need more for GTAIV and newer titles to come out.
GTAIV is a bad console port, there is no reason to believe we will start to see games using Quads, they don't even use Dual cores properly.I can't say I've put a whole lot of time in trying to push it ... But it's on a gigabyte ep45-ds3

Yea you should definatley be able to get it higher than 3.2GHz then. I am running mine at 3.4GHz w/ 1.275V vcore also had to up the spp and fsb voltages a tad. I kind of want to try for 3.8GHz but at 3.4 my temps under load are 62/61/58/56 and unforunatley I cannot fit a larger cpu heatsink in my case due to the large side fan.

BeatMith, I had the same problem with my e8400. Just under lock your ram to 800. I did that and got it to 3.6 on stock volts. Realy most 1066 ram is just 800 thats overclocked, making it less stable.I've seen some people posting a bit higher fps scores with a Q6600 than a e8400 and I thought the same thing that dual cores were not being implemented well in games so why would quads so I went with the e8400 instead of a Q6600 but if I had it to do over I would go with a quad so my vote is for the Q9550 or better yet the Q9650.ptown58

well my mobo and stuff is in my sig, but i have my vcore dangerously high, it's set to 1.465 in bios, but it has a .06v vdroop, so it runs at about 1.392v in cpu-z w/ prime95 , 1.448v w/out, my ram is set to sync mode, and i set the voltage to 2.2v, stock being 2.1v for the ocz reaper stuff i have,
heres a Link to my CPU-Z verified page for 4.1
and heres for what i'm using now Link
but my temps are very good, i have it no hotter than 63c after 4 hrs on prime95, i have a xigmatek 120mm HSF, and the antec 900 moves air like no other, but i am honestly seeing good improvements with my Q9550 over my E8400 @ the same speed, mostly because i'm constanly running utorrent or steam, or ad-aware, or itunes, so i really see the benefit of having a quad, even if the game poorly uses the second core, if half of the first and second cores are being used by background programs then you're going to have poor performance, although there were only a few games i noticed a performance hit in, crysis, supreme commander, and oblivion (outside), but other than that i noticed very little increase in performance, and i dont mean to spend anyone elses money, but if you're asking my honest opinion, i would reccomend the Q9550, if you're short on cash, then stick with an e8400
I plan on upgrading to a Q9550 when you actually need a Quad Core. You should buy a cheaper Core 2 Duo now, and in a a year or so buy the Q9550.Jamiemydearx3
Or he could just stick with the single core and upgrade to a dual core when you actually need a dual core. Oh lol.
You need a quad core now or you wouldn't have overclocked your dual core to 4.2GHz to try to keep up.

gta IV is a bad game. I will upgrade to a quad when it's necessary.gta IV is a bad game. paullywog
Incorrect. Your opinion is that it is a bad game. Whereas I'm of the opinion that I think it is a good, awesome graphics, gameplay is good and the freedom to roam and do what you want. It is the best game in its class.
You could have stated why you think it is a bad game.

What? Dual Core > Quad Core. For most games. I overclocked my e8400 just because I enjoy free performence. Same reason why most other people overclock their CPUs. :|[QUOTE="teddyrob"][QUOTE="Jamiemydearx3"]I plan on upgrading to a Q9550 when you actually need a Quad Core. Quad cores are a waste of money now, we won't see quad-core optimize games until maybe end of this year if we are lucky. GTA-IV is a poorly optimized port, that if someone wants it, get a console for it. It is not a PC game as it is now. Since Crytek engine and Unreal 3 engine(most popular engine out there atm imo), don't really use quads and we won't see a new massive game engine for a while(by saying massive, I mean an engine that many games use, such as the U3 engine), dual cores all the way. OCing a dual core, just gives you free perfomance. On stock speeds E8500 and E8400 > quad on most games. And as for the multi-tasking: I burn dvd, listen to music(itunes), serf on the next, have steam, xfire, msn, google chat, aero engine and etc running all the time. No worries so far. Multi-tasking with a quad, is if you do like 2 video encoding at the same time and etc. No need for that. Dual cores aren't trying to keep up with quads, quads are trying to keep up with dual cores, when it comes to gaming performance, price and value over money. Please Log In to post.
