Posted this on the cnc3 forum:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/commandconquer3/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-34486349&pid=932602

This is for anybody getting this error after patching cnc3 from version 1.0.

A required security module cannot be activated.
This program cannot be executed (5024).

Game was working fine for me with v1.0, but as soon as I patched up I get this error. Turns out EA upgraded their copy protection to now check if you're running process explorer!

I guess we're just hackers and pirates to them huh?

I expected no less from EA. BF2/BF2142 patches completely rape the game. Seems like they have 5 year olds writing the patches.

I don't like EA, period. All they care about it money. If people won't buy those EA Sports, Need for Speed, and Sims games, EA would be pretty much gone forever. That would be the best day in video game history since Super Mario Bros. came out.

the thread mentions that it still gives the error even after process explorer is closed - you have to restart. or maybe i'm thinking of SH4 weirdness, i forget. my guess is that it's some obscure accidental conflict between the two programs, anyway. what does process explorer do that would interfere with copy protection, besides see it happen?

Because you still need to reboot even if you close process explorer. EA's copy protection checks your current xp session if you've ran it, forcing you to reboot just to play this game. ...also its the principle of it.

process explorer is a legitimate tool which microsoft actually aquired by buying out sysinternals. Think of it as a task-manager on steroids...

EA, unfortunately, is part of the Corporate Borg. The all consuming money conglomerate. Those guys could probably give a rats ass whether or not people are pissed.

Eh, just don't load it on startup.  Why all the crying?  Honestly, it's not a big deal.

EA screwed me over when I bought the Euro-pack at Wal-mart.  I can not even the key to work because it says it is invalid.  So I emailed customer support and they did not even help me.  In fact, they just ignored me.  I haven't got a response back in 3 months and I try to send more emails, but none of them are coming back.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. They have you're money so it's like, why should they give a damn?

The ONLY reason I ever buy EA products is because occasionally they release some sweet games...

*shakes fist at EA for selling out hard*

Who's crying?  I'm pissed because what's next?  You can't have any background app because EA thinks you're a pirate?

FYI this frustrated me for 2 days trying to get my legitimate copy patched up.   Try reinstalling a couple of times just to figure out its a tool you've been using for years without any other game having issues with it...

No duh, that what most businesses care about, look at blizzard, do they really want to spend a boat load of money to develop starcraft 2 when they could comfortably rake in the cash with Wow for the the next few years?

If you really hate securerom, buy it through digital distribution, where it generally isn't used

Believe me I would have bought this online if EA link didn't stink so much.

I also have other games I believe that use securom that don't conflict with process explorer.

Oh, did I mention that EA snuck this "check" in from v1.02?

So why is their "protection system" not allowing process explorer to run? That's quite odd. What's next, you can't have a burner plugged in? Using a firewall? A specific antivirus application? I hope someone sues them.

*shrugs* I'd say go to Gamecopyworld and see if they have a no-cd thingamajig or even a cracked exe while simultaneously telling EA to shuvit.jer_1
Absolutely. A screwed up problem requires a solution such as this. It's really sad that the publishers don't care about their customers. After all, it;s the customers who make them their money by honestly buying the games when pirated versions are all over the internet.

Piracy protection only makes more pirates as pirates don't have problems with games that legit users has Only one of the games I've bought in the past year has been in my DVD-drive, and the only reason for that is that this game doesn't have any protection

Yep it's sad. People who download pirated games can play without having a disc in the drive as a dongle, they have no trouble with crappy "protection" systems either, their pc's remain stable the whole time. People who purchase games however, runs into all kinds of trouble because of the "protection" software...
