Ok so my purpose for being here is as follows.

E3 is just around the corner, but as of yet I have seen little to entice me to purchase another console.

But I know zero about PC hardware...

Do i take the plunge and just hope it works out for the best....or is creating an awesome rig a labour intensive, dull and a fruitless venture  that could potentially lead to dissapointment??

the new consoles run on modded tablet apu processors and are at the low end of the amd lineup of cpu and apu's. my advice is to wait a month, while learning about pc and get to know the parts, and go in that direction if you want to do hardcore gaming for the next 5 years.

the way how you phrased your question, i sense a bit of console bias on the pc perspective"dull and fruitless adventure venture". So this hermit will not offer his opinion to an obviously biased person. You have already made up your mind.

If you have a 360, get the wireless transmitter and use it. It will make the transition much easier.

Well dont get me wrong I appreciate you utilising your fantastic "senses". Unfortunately you were almost entirely wrong. I  dont have a bias because I dont hold an allegiance to inanimate objects, I purchase whichever I think will meet my needs as a consumer. Surely me saying " I have seen little to entice me to purchase another console" bit....reinforces this. What I was asking (and thanks to those who answered my questions, vague as they were) is if I were to leap in to PC gaming head first am I likely to make an absolute tonne of mistakes because I know little about PC hardware. Is it labour intensive??? Is it dull??? could it lead to disappointment and be totally fruitless....eg- me spend £1000 pounds and still have a crappy computer. Nice job representing the PC gamer to moron. At least I ask questions to find out answers to things I dont understand, you just make stupid assumptions with a mightier than thou attitude.

Takes 1-2 hours give or take, maybe 3 if you take a nap.

Its pretty fast and should be fun, not labor-like or dull.

I do like a nap... Am I better off buying something from Alienware considering I know little about hardware or should I do some research and build my own???

What's your IQ? Did you own an Erector Set as a kid? Are you still a kid? Do you believe in Creationism? Do you have a bucket of money lying around?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself. If you have a moderately functional human brain and are coachable, you should be able to build your own computer without breaking anything more than a couple of times or permanently injuring yourself. It is a good feeling to be sitting in the cockpit of your shiny new home-brew computer, knowing that you saved a couple of hundred dollars and have the most kick-ass machine possible for the money you did shell out.

I built my first rig a few months ago now. Before that the most I had done was upgrade RAM and install a graphics card. It may be intimidating at first, but it's not hard. I believe the others would agree that you should learn up and build your own. Picking parts can be tedious and confusing at times, but for that you can just give us a budget and a few people will supply you with a good list of build components. As far as this whole process being worth it, fun, dull, etc., that's really down to your personality. If you like electronics and enjoy fiddling/building things, then this should be up your alley.

If you do decide against building it yourself, there are far better options than alienware.
