Hi, guys. I am about to buy a new pc with e6600 core 2 duo, 8800gts 640mb evga card, 2gb mushkin extreme ram and other nice components. I am really concerned about what OS to pick. I am a huge gamer and usually play games old and new like warcraft 3 frozen throne, lord of the rings online, WOW, medieval 2 total war, CS:Source, and am anticipating new games coming out like Hellgate London, Crysis, Ut3 and starcraft 2. I was wondering if I would be able to play these games and multitask at the same time if I were to get windows vista ultimate or another version of vista. My brother recently bought a computer with windows vista and had so many problems that he had to return it. I am thinking about sticking with XP but I dont wanna be behind in technology with all the great specs on my new computer. Thanks for any help nooblet69
If you are going to purchase a new PC it makes no sense at all to get it with a 7 year old OS that is going out the door. With 2 gigs of ram Vista smokes XP and it plays games just fine. Just update your video card driver to the most recent and everything will be good to go. Any problem was because of poor drivers but the most recent nvidia drivers are good. All my games play the same or even better.
Old games (1 year from this date) runs like crap on Vista. The new eye candy & useless functions they copied from OS10 isn't worth it. Go with XP and be a happy gamer.BounceDK
I can tell you never used Visa before. It makes sense to invest in new tech like a DX10 card to use with a 7 year old OS. What game runs crappy because i have played Far Cry, Half Life, WOW, BF2 and 2142 etc and they all play fine.

You cannot run it on an old PC and destroying the CD is nothing. All you need is the key. Anyway I cannot go back to XP after using Vista, it looks dated now. This reminds me when Xp came out, everyone was saying it was crap blah blah blah since drivers were not the best at the time. Thhe Nvidia drivers were not the best when Vista launched but they got so much better. How that became the fault of the OS? beats me...
History is repeating itself.
ive had nothing but bad experiences with vista. between it taking up 1GB of my ram, being narly with some of my games and failing to boot after 2 weeks (the MBR was corrupted or something), i just dug out my old copy of XP and am usgin that until vista SP1 comes out. this was while ago and perhaps things have improved but i aint touching it till SP1 is released. This is on a core 2 extreme 2.66GHz (quad core) with 2GB of ram (PC800) and an 8800GTX.
however if ure buying a new OS then id advise going with vista. u may as well...MS will keep supporting it longer than they will support XP and eventually all the major kinks will be sorted out. u will probably end up buying it anyway, especially for DX10 games, so there little point in wasting money on XP.
If I were to stay with windows xp is DX10 compatible with it ? Only reason I wannas tay with XP is because most people say that vista will be crap with games for another 1-2 years at least.nooblet69dx10 is overrated. The performance is much lower compared to dx9 and the graphics are the same.

unfortunately DX10 wont be coming to xp.....ever (according to MS). apparently its because of the new driver model in vista. so if u want DX10 then u have to get vista.

No Xp is not DX10. Don't listen to these guys Vista is a great OS. It's a lot better than XP and the Nvidia drivers are getting better and better.
Games do not play like crap and I have played most of the games you listed and they play fine. Some people have older PCs so they say vista sucks. I heard 1 gig isn't the way to go but you already have 2 gigs so you are set.

So was DX8 , 7 and all the others. i tell you history is repeating itself. Maybe you should do some reading on how vista uses ram. I would reccomend 2 gigs and it uses as much as possible to ensire your system is fast. It caches ram and releases on demand.

Stop lying. Stop flaming. Stop ranting.
1 - Vista does not ruin old games. I've played Half-Life 1 (not Source!) perfectly fine. I've played Far Cry fine. Hell, I've played AGE OF EMPIRES 2 fine.
2 - So you broke a CD. Horray! You're a rebel now! And you just wasted a buttload of money. Nice job, pal.
3 - DX10 isn't overrated. Case and point, DX9 - DX10 Crysis Comparison. Watch the videos, don't just go by the text. The differences are huge.
4 - Calling us "special" just because YOU got your facts out of the toilet doesn't prove anything, other than the fact you're a troll.
[QUOTE="BounceDK"]Keep telling yourself that, it may come true if you do.Zeke129
Where's the evidence to prove YOUR point? I supplied you rock-solid evidence and you clearly ignored it.
Oh, wait! There is no evidence!
Enjoy some benchmarks. And let's not forget the crappy sound you get in older titles too. And that Crysis video shows nothing special. I can't see the difference. Why they chose to leave out the motion blur effect when zooming in DX9 i beyond me. It's there for them to use so why not use it? And in the DX9 footage, he shoots down a dead tree with no leaves on it but happily shoots & throw grenades in the DX10 . It's yet another publicity stunt and a poor one I might add. But you people are falling for it, so I guess it's working as intended.[QUOTE="Zeke129"][QUOTE="BounceDK"]Keep telling yourself that, it may come true if you do.BounceDK

Plus, you clearly didn't watch the videos. The foliage is denser in DX10, the smoke effects are better, the tree physics are better, and there's more on-screen.

The Lost Planet DX10 vs DX9 shows they still havent come out with games that run anything worth another 200$ and dumping all the classics.
Lol, I didnt mean to start this flame war. But I have another question. Should I postpone my purchase of a new PC until vista service pack 1 comes out ? Would it be much more stable if I did ? All I want to do is play my games at max quality and good fps :( while multi-tasking. And I want this pc to last me a long time considering the money I am investing into it. Would it be better to do xp now and upgrade to vista later ? nooblet69
I'll say yes, that other guy will say no. I suggest you do some of your own research, as you won't get anything out of this thread.

There's no smoke effects in the dx9 portion of the video because there's no grenades. Nice try though. Can't you separate your hd and load XP on one bit and Vista on the other? That's what I intend to do should DX10 really get going (that is, of course, if it is possible).Decado_basic
Sure, you can easily dual-boot XP and Vista. Lots of people are doing this. Check the PC hardware forum, there will be a tutorial there for sure.

This is about a guy buying a new PC but you are telling him to get the old OS instead of the new because of a Lost Planet Demo. Did you look at the benchmarks for DX9 only? I am sure you notice vista and Xp had the same frame rate. Hell I can run a game with DX8 and get a higher rate than DX9.
Vista's not that bad. I have the ultimate edition and its okay, not bad but not better than XP for me at the moment. The thing that annoys me the most is the constant popups that pop up when I click on programs asking me if I want to open the program. I havent figured out how to turn it off. Okay back to the point. Vista's okay and doesn't use as much resources as I thought when I bashed it. Also old games work fine. I've been playing Starcraft, Deus Ex, Planescape Torment and Fallout 2 just fine. I would go get Vista and "borrow" a copy of XP from the internet.Drizzt13

I was in the same boat as you for and decided to stick with XP. But I already had a copy of XP and upgrading to vista would of cost more money. If you have XP right now, I would stick with that, if you had to buy one I would still say XP for now. Vista may have gone gold but all the support drivers for it are still in alpha/beta.
As from a gamers standpoint, the only reasons to buy Vista right now is to run Lost Planet in full settings with a huge performance hit and play a game that was ported from the Xbox 2 years ago.
And about the Crysis video, yes I saw the DX9/10 comparisons. The main thing I noticed was that the framerate in the DX10 version seemed to be half of that of the DX9 version.
And yes I also know that Windows XP really sucked at first. That is why I used Win98se for a year after XP was released.
You do know you can run the games in DX9 if you want to right? Looking at the Lost Planet benchmark Vista had the same frames in DX9 as XP. The drivers are 10X better than they were at launch and are getting better.
I just don't see why anyone buying a new PC would want it to come with Xp at this point. It does not make any sense. I am sure most people have an old copy of an Xp cd knocking around so why not get the new OS.

Thanks man, those pop ups were my major problem with Vista.
Use XP for now. If you can get a copy of Vista for cheap when buying this new PC, go for it. After purchase 1. format, install XP or 2. create two partitions to run dual boot. I went with #1 with my new laptop since it doesn't have a large enough HDD.
If you want the best performance in games, XP is the way to go at the moment. Vista might catch up and surpass it later, but you won't have any problem installing/running it then, right?

Did you read my text completely before flaming? I mean its one sentence... I said they "still havent come out with games," which implies that they might come out with a game. Also, I guess your not a fan of some of the classics. Before being a dick I suggest you read someones entire post. Im not basing it off one game, unless you can post any games that have dx10 that has a noticeable improvement while playing. I wasnt biased in my opinion unless someone thinks that vista is worth playing lost planet for 100$ more. Sure buying XP seems retarded when there is a new OS out, but I didnt say "BUY XP!" I said there wasnt any games out worth 200$ for VISTA. So stop pissing on me because you spent 200$ on an OS and want other people to buy it with you so you dont seem like an idiot. Ill buy vista when I see it as worth buying, until then Ill spend my money on other things because I already have XP and it runs everything as good as vista if not better.
Half of me wants to say go with XP since Vista, albeit a good OS, still has a bunch of problems. The other half says that since youre going with a new PC (with a Dx10-capable card to boot) you might as well go with Vista since whatever problems it has will be remedied withing a few months.
If I were in your shoes, I'd get Vista.
Thanks for the advice, guys. My last question is if I decide to stick with xp and then switch to vista 6 or more months down the road will my hardware be affected my switching the OS or will everything be intact ? I have never personally switched the OS but ive heard that things will run slower than they would have if you do switch. And how do you upgrade the OS ? ive been told that you just uninstall your current one and then install the new one. What negative effects will this have if I decide to take this path ?nooblet69
Switching OS does not affect your hardware or slow down your comp. By switching I mean formatting the whole XP partition and install Vista on this blank partition. Upgrading from XP to Vista is more risky and might cause problems, so I don't recommend it. There are many guides on Vista installation out there.
Well, it looks like you should get the Ultimate version of Vista, seeing as the people that reported games run fine on Vista were running it, and the others just don't exactly explain which one they're talking about.
I'm getting my new system next week, with a Core 2 Duo (forgot which one it was) + motherboard, and Vista Ultimate.
I'm hoping Supreme Commander will run fine on it.
Does someone have a good estimate as to how much of a power source a Vista gaming computer needs?

Problem solved, then. If you're going to spend several grand on a PC you may as well get a HD large enough so you can install Vista when it gets useful and load DX10 games on it. Makes me wish I remembered to get my "free" copy of Vista with my PC (mail in offer).
