Hey guys, last weekend I bought a LaCie 750GB External Harddrive. I did this so that I could still have all my downloads, but have room on my 150GB Internal drive for games and programs. So I proceeded to copy all my stuff from my documents, my pictures, and my music on to my external harddrive, and deleted them off of my internal one. Everything was great. Then, like an hour ago, it stopped working properly. The new hd still appears in my computer, but when I enter it, it is just all my folders, but they are all empty! Any help?

Okay, so now I have had it turned off for about 5 minutes, and turned it back on, and my files reappeared, but I couldn't use them. Do you think this is an over heat issue? (I haven't had my hd turned off since i got it)

OUCHHH, i only use external as a backup of the stuff on my internal drive, what OS are you using? Did it come with any software? Maybe you need to "remove hardware" in the sys tray before you turn it off, maybe you didn't and it got corrupted or something :?

Yeah, that seems to be the case. I had it turned off for 20 minutes, and everything is accessible again. So lesson is, turn off your external harddrive when you don't need it?

Ehh yah, the idea is if there's a lightning strike or some electricity spike you won't lose everything. Worst case you lose your computer but not your important files :? Also if you're really hardcore you'll throw that + important paper work in a fire proof safe and move it to someones house in case yours burns down.................... I must be really scaring everyone with these disaster scenarios.

No, it's okay. I'm Polish. We're used to "Lightning Strikes" ;) Bad pun?

a lacie drive shouldn't overheat, I've got/had a few of the greyish silver ones. never overheated - infact they should power down when not in use and increase fan speed if heat increases.

I've had a couple die on me though so lacie isn't any better than any other drive for reliability.

Keep a careful eye on it. I had a mediagate that displayed kinda similar symptoms. it gradually got worse - turned out it was the case screwing up and after sticking a couple of different drives in it with similar results- concluded it was the mediagate case and bought a new case - no probs since

Well, I can tell that I had a similar problem. (Solved)
I bought an external few months ago and I have all my stuff in it (more than 9000 digital pictures) and a lot of video, music.....
It stopped working and I can't access it anymore. it says ( Windows can't recognize your device ) even my PS3 can't!
I bought a software for data recovery ( Recover My Files ) and thanks god I had all my stuff back :D ... get it.
you also can have your deleted things :D
