I fell asleep watching a movie on my laptop last night, when I woke up to my externanal HDD making a shrill screach/scraching noise that apparently happened from it being knocked over while i fell assleep. When I pluged it back in the autoplay was not working and my computer was not reconizing that a disc was was pluged in.

I'm using a 500 GB external USB 2.0 Seagate HDD it is externally powered

and A R51 IBM Thinkpad notebook, and I don't think it is an issue with the usb ports because they still work with a mouse and keyboard.

Any Help would be awesome,

Also if my drive is broken can I still get my files off?

the drive sounds like it is mechanically broken, i think there are still ways of getiing the data off them but if you have to ask wheeather it's failed or not i'm pretty sure you're not up to it

If your drive is trashed, it will take more than an arm and leg to recover data. A computer repair store won't be up to the task either.
