you know there out there.. free 2 play mmo's the bane of proper pc gaming.. they make some folks quiver at the thought.

however id like to share with you an interesting article i discovered at RPS.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/02/05/there-are-an-awful-lot-of-mmos-heres-some/

this past year we saw alot of these cretinous creations escape they cages over at gpotatoe, ijji, nexon and the like..and heres but a small taste of the fugitive list.

its not long.. i dare say it DWARFS a list of paid for mmo's going back DOUBLE its time frame..

it begs to ask the question if its even meaningful to charge for an MMO anymore from a real developer/publisher. of course those paid for games generally are of a higher grade and dont use servers older than my parents and routinely get good maintanence updates and content additions. but it seems to me that qyality just cant stack up... and like the might panzer before it. is losing a war of quantity to the cheap sherman or t-34 (whichever you feel comfortable relating to).

MMOs that you have pay for monthly will have always bring higher-quality content often to keep profitable. The F2P model may be bringing more revenues but it also has the potential to bring imbalanced gameplay where the users paying money will always have better items/gear/dungeons than those who use the free content available to them.

This. espcially in the infamous nexon's fps. Combat arms. Premium items are bazzilion times more powerfull. So its totally imbalanced gameplay

FTP games are terrible. The micro-transactions are usually overpowered and it ends up costing you more in the long run.

Well, I can only speak for myself and say that every single F2P MMO I have tried has ended up being extremely disapointing. The quality you get for a paid MMO is worth the money. I don't plan on ever touching another F2P game again. The low quality and rampant amounts of micro-transactions in these games quickly kills any amount of entertainment I might get out of the title.

A lot of F2P are abohorrent. But some, like DDO and Lotro, are actually quite decent and very good alternatives.

Cause those 2 started as subscription based games....

I think both system are doomed to fail, people always go for the most popular p2p and f2p is always the same, you play some than get to a point where you need to pay 3-4x more than p2p to continue enjoying the game.

Yet they've been far more successful as F2P and Turbine have actually expanded their teams to allow for better service and speedier content delivery since they've gotten such an increase in revenue. I'd say starting as subscription based games actually hindered the two games progress. I don't think whether a game has a subscription or not guarantees it to be a higher quality, it's just a fact that the MMO's which have more cash poured into them typically decide to go the subscription route for no reason other then they can.

Could be... all I can say is that I played LOTRO as soon as it came out, and probably for a year or so....(when it was subscription), and it was a great game (still is I hear) and very polished...
