while I voted success because I have faith in Bethesda and the combat so far looks very interesting, its still looks kind of a risky move, but still innovative. We will have to wait and see, well play :p
Sucess for the mainstream audience and the players that liked Oblivion and never played Fallout/Fallout 2.
The rest aren't going to like it, though.

I disagree, If there is someone out there who likes RPG's but has never played Elder scrolls or fallout series, and they pick it up whats not to like?

They fall under mainstream.
And by "the rest" I was referring to the crowd of people at the official Bethesda forums Fallout section and fansites like NMA with their seething hatred of Bethesda (though NMA has cooled down a fair deal) and anyone who wants to take a good series out of the 90s.
I think the game will be a critical and commercial success, just like Oblivion.
But, just like Oblivion, the cult fanbase surrounding the game's progenitor(s) will mostly probably strongly dislike it.
I can see it comfortably selling 3-4m over all three systems just by being a Bethesda game, and just by being a Fallout game.
And while I think the game world will be a lot of fun to explore, just like Oblivion, I also think they will butcher just about everything else. I'm holding out a little hope that the game wiill have well developed roleplaying mechanics and quality storytelling... but only a little.
If they scrapped the Fallout 3 title there wouldn't be any problems. Otherwise it's just a butchered fallout game.DucksBrains
This is what I find funny. A title doens't make or break a game*. If the game is good, it's good; no matter what it's named.
*Well it could if it was a really awful title, but that's not the point.

The problem is, chances are it will be parading itself as a Fallout game... minus the content and qualities that made Fallout so unique and outstanding.

Beth are kind of asking for it. They went out of their way to assure us that they knew what made Fallout Fallout, that they're huge fans of the series and that they're the right people to make a true sequel; a sequel that Fallout fans have been waiting a decade for. Really, they're changing too much/including stupid ****.Random fact: the range of your radar depends on your perception. Work that one out.
Good question.
I think Fallout 3 will be good in many areas, I even think (and hope) it will be a decent roleplaying game) but I think It will fail as a Fallout game.
Fallout 3 will most likely create a whole new fanbase, and get hailed to the high heavens by critics, but I predict it will lack the gritty, mature, and dark homorous feel of the first two.
In fact I am willing to bet this is how BEth sees it, considering the relationship they got with the fallout fanbase, who can be a bit much at times (with good reason?).
I am looking farwards to it tho... alot, and hope the waiting wont be a waste of time
I guess it will fail Fallout fans.thusaha
Is that because some of them don't want to know about the game and seem a bit reluctant to give it a chance? ( I'm not necessarily referring to you specifically if you're a major fan, just some others!!)
Out of the box, I wouldn't be surprised if the game wasn't very good to play as an RPG.
IF (and we don't know if they will) allow mods like they've done for TES, then I do think that there are enough good ideas in the game that could be built upon to make it a fairly good experience, but probably not one hardcore Fallout fans are going to love. Basically, from what I've read, there's nothing totally broken ala Oblivion that mods couldn't fix.
Out of the box, I wouldn't be surprised if the game wasn't very good to play as an RPG.

They are separate games though. Can't you give them the benefit of the doubt that they will have improved and learnt from their horrible horrible mistakes!?
There's no Sean Bean in this one for one thing!!

The fact that VATS is an "addon" system that drains action points, but you can fire unimpeded in the real-time mode, basically making it a FPS. Really, I don't mind having the real-time option there, but why not have it drain action points? That would make it really them equal options.
Also, having been (and still am) a big fan of Morrowind, I followed the development of Oblivion closely. I should say that I did not think Oblivion would turn out what it ended up being before release. But the way Bethesda is promoting this game and their willingness to talk about certain things reminds me of Oblivion's development, which isn't going to evoke extremely positive feelings from me.
I'm willing to give the game a chance, but I'm expecting an open-world FPS with some minor RPG elements. I'm not a super-hardcore RPG gamer, so I can forgive a lot of stuff, but Bethesda found a way to lower my expectations with Oblivion. You're seeing the result.

ah, but in the eyes of bethesda, it wasn't a horrible mistake (huge commercial + critical success), so they'd be more than willing to follow its path. and their approach to fallout 3 is basically fallout - oblivion style, it seems, from everything i've read about this game.
though i'm willing to give the game a try and give it the benefit of the doubt before condemning it, i'm not all that hopeful.
It pretty much comes down to this, it will be a commercial success (just because of the Bethesda logo if not anything else), and it will be widely liked by everyone, probably win a couple of awards, and probably be remebered as an overall great game (just like Oblivion, and dont try and say that Oblivion wont be remembered as a great game).
But the cult-fans will be disappointed (as cult-fans usually are when something has been remade years after the original release). But thats understandable, as the game was probably a big part of their life when they were young (or as much as a video game can be), and they have a locked image in their mind of what fallout should be, with any deviation of that 'prefect' model being flamed. While I do understand where they are coming from (especially as I have some mates who are what you would call cult-fans of fallout), I still think that alot of them need to loosen up a bit (especially after visiting the Bethesda Fallout 3 forum), learn the meaning of 'progression' ya know? But hey, thats only my opinion.
I know that Ill enjoy this game, but then again Ive never played fallout 1 or 2, so I dont have any high expectations for continuity or whatever; from the previews and whatnot, this game looks like its gonna be great.

I'll let you know after the game is released and i've played it. I just hope its optimized well because i can't even play Oblivion for 10 minutes without the game freezing or crashing.

And youre probably right in a way, I dont have the deep background with fallout that others have. But I have read enough on the forums and such to know why and what fans are upset about. And to me it seems that with the amount of information we have been given about the game, is very small to the amount of criticism fallout 3 is getting. The fallout fans have been very nitpicky about everything, breaking down every little bit of information and then criticising it. The information given about the game so far is just the peak of the iceberg. After E3 alot more things will come clear (and maybe even after the fan interview arrives at the Bethesda F3 forum), and until then we have to wait.
Fallout 3 has all of the overarching themes that was in the original fallout games (so I have read from bethesda), the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system, post-apocolyptic setting, deep dialogue options (which Bethesda has said exists, and until you play the game no one has the right to criticise that point); they said they were fans of the game, big fans, and that they are trying to make it true to the originals as they can. Its not going to be completely identical to fallout 1 and 2 in every single aspect and game mechanic, but do you really want that, three identical games with no alter from the original game mechanics?
But then again, I never played any of the orignal fallouts, so you can disregard what I say if you want. Doesnt bother me, this is just what I think, from an outside view. From the position of someone who has never played fallout 1 or 2 before, this game looks like its gonna be great.
Prior to Fallout the world went to war over the diminishing resources, petrol and uranium, "hell bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth". That war reduced most of the planet to rubble, as seen in Fallout and Fallout 2. The government went out of their way, spending billions to built vaults under the Earth in order to protect the people from the nuclear war. They also built Power Armor in order to enchance combat ability. Radiation is still heavily felt in both games (i.e. The Glow). Ghouls are humans who have been severely disfigured due to radiaton. Not all super mutants were simpletons. So why is it that in Fallout 3 we have:
- A town built in the crater of an unexploded nuke? A) How could an unexploded nuke have a crater? B) The population fears nuclear weapons, so why build a town around it?
- Exploding nuclear cars. A) If the world went to war over sources of nuclear power, why are nuclear cars in such plentiful supply? B) Why hasn't anyone in the entire wasteland used this system as a means to develop? C) Why do they generate a mushroom cloud? D) Why doesn't the explosion destroy the car? E) Why does the radiation disappear almost immediately? F) The cars weren't even ****ing nuclear in the originals. They were all destroyed beyond comprehension.
- A ****ing phone booth that protects from a nuclear explosion. What. The. ****. If they could build such a thing, what was the purpose of the vaults?!
- It takes 5 NUKES (!) to kill a Behemoth. So why does it use a car door as a shield?
- Why can ghouls leap at tremendous speed when they were falling apart in the originals? How can they heal eachother with radiation? How can they zap the player with radiation attacks?
- Why doesn't intelligence alter my dialogue choices?
- Again, nuclear power was a thing to be feared in the originals. So what purpose does the Fatman serve?
- Power Armor negatively impacts the player's abilities.

Translation: Fallout 3 is an Epic Fail.
But even better is:
"It would be a lot less fun without that level of gore," adds Pagliarulo. "It's part of the visceral experience. You laugh your ass off when you see a mutant's leg get blown off. It never gets old - it hasn't yet."
(...)
And that's the final piece of gear you'll need to pack before your vacation at the end of the world: a wicked sense of humor. "It's so depressing that you have to see the humor in it," says Pagliarulo. "If not, you'll lose your mind or slit your wrists. Part of your brain refuses to admit it will ever happen, so you have to look at it and laugh. The dark humor of talking to an old lady who's really nice to you, and then blow her head off, put her head on a counter, and pretend to talk to her...there's a certain charm to that."
Bethesda's track record is pretty bad, apart from Elder Scrolls.
The Elder Scrolls, unfortunately, failed too. Oblivion is meh.
Their attempts to create a shooter always failed, but they just keep trying...
When we started this, we would go to great lengths to explains the differences from Oblivion," explains Fallout 3's executive producer, Todd Howard. "If you're talking to an enthusiast, there are so many differences, and we feel it's under-selling the game to say it's Oblivion with guns. But when we started talking to more consumer-oriented magazines, we'd have, like, two seconds...and we'd say, 'it's like post-apocalyptic Oblivion with guns.' And they're like, 'Awesome!' To Joe Public, it's mainly first-peron, wide-open game and you get to do what you want. The game it's closest to is Oblivion. So now when someone asks, 'Is it Oblivion with guns?' my main answer is, 'in all the best ways.'
[QUOTE="thusaha"]I guess it will fail Fallout fans.biggest_loser
Is that because some of them don't want to know about the game and seem a bit reluctant to give it a chance? ( I'm not necessarily referring to you specifically if you're a major fan, just some others!!)
Actually it's quite the opposite, they know a whole lot more than you and me about the original Fallout's and this "Fallout" 3 and simply dislike it.
Here is a link to the biggest Fallout fan group, take some time to read some articles and forum threads, very interesting if you ask me.
So for me and them, Fallout 3 is going to fail because it really is Oblivion with guns, a Fallout gutted from everything that made the originals memorable.
There's more points I could have made:[QUOTE="RobbieH1234"]

I think it may very well be one of the best games of the year. The developers will have learn a lot from Oblivion and its reception and we may start to see the very best of Bethesda..biggest_loser
They already tried to make up for screwing up by doing what they did for the Shivering Isles to at least show they cared. But meh, in my eyes the game will fail. Not in the way of sales or anything as in this respect I think it will flourish. But long time RPGer's and Fallout fans are probably in for dissapointment. It will probably be some stripped down game with pretty graphics selling it along.
