I don't get the mentality that moving with the times requires completely changing the forumla.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is still based on the same real time DnD varient that NWN 1 is based on, it is a very successful game and is now anticipating its 3rd expansion. Dragon Age is an upcoming modern RPG that is still using a Baldur's Gate like combat system.

In both cases the games were updated for today's audience 'without' drastically changing the original formula.

So why did Fallout 3 have to drastically change its formula to appeal to a modern audience? I have my own thoughts on that; but this isn't the place. Lets just say the modern audience Oblivion and Fallout 3 are designed to appeal to; are not the same audience Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age are designed for.

That may sound obvious; but there is a key difference.

I've been getting tangled up in the pro/con Fallout 3 thread for a while now. To be honest I think I'll try to restrain myself for now. If some people feel that making a new game that tries to draw on the old fallout material is some kind of sacrilege then that's their outlook. I'm pretty sure most of them have already made up their mind and they will hate the game regardless of how it plays and looks. Somehow some people feel that it's just a lot cooler to rant about the old game. I did play them and I did love them back when they were released.

Now, interplay has gone the way of the dodo bird, they wont be making a Fallout 3. By doing their own take on the fallout games Bethada is not taking anything away from anyone. Fallout 1 and 2 will still be the same games. I think that's ultimately what puzzles me the most, that people are getting hostile over something that takes nothing away from them or the fallout games. It simply adds a new take on the series. Whether it'll be a good game remains to be seen and ultimately it doesn't really matter how many previews you've read, screen shots seen or websites visited. Until the game is out your still guessing like the rest of us.

Im looking forward to the game and hoping it does the Fallout name justice. I enjoyed the first 2, and and I also enjoyed Oblivion, so I'm hoping it meets somewhere in the middle. I definitely hope you can make choices that actually lead you on different paths in the game like the old fallouts, and not so much like oblivion. But I hope the world is as fun to explore as the world in Oblivion. I also didn't like what I saw from the video clips, and I hope this doesn't just turn out to be some shooter with mediocre gameplay, which is what it kind of looked like, but it's hard to tell. Looking forward to see how it turns out!

[QUOTE="Artosa"]the game will be a dissapointment for true fallout fans.SimpJee

This is such a huge copout, especially when no one has even played the game.

Yep, making a judgment based on the numerous stupid things we've heard and seen about the game is unreasonable and just a copout. The logical thing to do is to cover our ears, ignore all those things and remain blindly optimistic that FO3 will not, in fact, be a steaming pile of dog poo.

I'm so very glad you asked.

"For example, a city called Megaton was built around a crater where a nuclear bomb fell but never detonated." Link
"At one point we set one of the exploding nuclear cars on fire and then hopped into a portable nuclear shelter (which costs a quarter to use and looks like a phone booth) to avoid the blast."Link
"Pulling the Fat Man from our shoulder pack, we launched several explosives roughly the size of footballs at the feet of the behemoth, making light work of the creature – it only took 5 nukes."Link
"We came across a Behemoth Super Mutant - one of the game's bosses - that could only be taken down easily with this device. The small nuclear explosions are fantastic, and those worried about balance will be relieved to know that it took several of them to bring him down."Link
"Feral ghouls are extremely swift and vicious and come leaping at you with tremendous speed."Link
"but there were also Glowing Ghouls who have fully absorbed the radioactivity and effectively heal their brethren by a radioactive burst of curative fluids."Link
Zapping the player with radiation attack. Link
"eventually make your character extremely ill if you let them zap you with their radiation-based attacks."Link
"Poor INT will NOT affect your dialogue choices."Link
"Most of the weapons and armors (even power armor and turbo plasma) can be found by in early parts of the game, but they have their disadvantages"Link
"The Pip-Boy has a radar on which the opponents are visible. Its range depends on the player's perception." Link
"The only time we really level stuff to your character is when we lock you in an area you can't leave, we don't want the enemies you're fighting to be grossly out of proportion to your character because you can't leave."Link
Flaming sword: Link
Suck-o-tron: Link
Toaster weapon: Link
Bobble heads increase stats: Link
Nerfed combat & less consequences: Link
No xp from sneaking, have to kill them: Link
"You laugh your ass off when you see a mutant's leg get blown off. It never gets old - it hasn't yet." Link
"The dark humor of talking to an old lady who's really nice to you, and then blow her head off, put her head on a counter, and pretend to talk to her...there's a certain charm to that." Link
"Had they not been identified as the Brotherhood of Steel (multiple times), I would not for the life of me have guessed who they were. They are described as "noble knights of the wasteland" setting out to beat the supermutants while swearing and behaving like average US soldier clichés."Link
"They're worried whether the VATS slo-mo is practical with the multitude of fights in FO3. 10 seconds of non-interactive cutscene during every shot?" Link
Town level cap: Link

Now, those points (with links) highlight the elements which do not belong in a Fallout game. I wrote that before the fan interview which confirmed the hand holding of the quest compass, how combat was nerfed to be more shootery, only 13 skills, perks being merged with traits, the teddy bear dismemberment, the toning down of all the themes, how the karma system affects nothing, how all the quests are independant of eachother, fast travelling, killing 3 super mutants at level 3 with a baseball bat and the removal of meaningful consequences to your choices.

Well, he did post a Q&A from a year ago that has been made largely redundant. I would go through it question by question, but that'd take far too much time for an argument that will go nowhere.

i actually didnt like fallout. the combat system just didnt sit with me at all. great characters and world mind and nice character development system.....but the combat system was just too stop/start for me and there was alot fo it. if they had the baldurs gate system then it would have been better imho.

so i dont know what to make of this. the combat certainly looks more fun imho. the game isnt also completly level scaled ala oblivion which is good. but im not sure its going to deliver on the other fronts like character development and writing and world development. if it doesent then that would be a really big shame.

im hoping they deliver but, after oblivion (which wasnt terrible...but it is stuck in morrowinds shadow imho (and that in turn sounds like its stuck in daggerfalls....trying to get that running on XP is a pain though....i hope GOG do somethign about it if bethesda let em)) i have my doubts. proove me wrong bethesda please.

Criticizing FO's combat system on the basis that it's turn-based is just dumb.

I have no idea where you get this idea that Fallout fans' biggest problem with this coming game is the combat? It never is the concern; it's mostly about the watered down Role playing of the original games. Like the dev. of Fallout 3 decide that they want to get the coices-consequences thing out of Fallout (something like you can kill a whole village of kittens and poeple will not notice your evil deeds and you can take ALL quests, including those of good alignment, later on). Most fallout communities online care about this kind of de-RPG of Beth, not the combat.

SimpJee

I wish more people would explain themselves, this seems like a valid argument to me. But there's nothing anyone can do about it but find another game, because Bioware is on a very high level of visibility with this game compared to the original devs of Fallout 1 and 2. If they include child killling in the game, and there's no punishment for it, they'd get sued very badly ... probably get an AO rating to boot.

When you say Bioware you really mean Bethesda right? or am i missing something here?

I think Fallout 3 will live up to it's hype. I liked Oblivion (100+hours), loved Morrowind, and had fun with Arena. I'm looking forward to another immersive RPG.

I really, really hope it'll be great, despite some of things that I don't like from the videos. (stiff animation, I dunno if VATS'll work well.)

Please, Bethesda please.

It maybe good. If Bethesda really learned their lessons with Oblivion it could be a good game.

Things that I hated about Oblivion:

- crap dialogue system

- über stupid NPC AI. You would stole from someone in one place and then many miles away guards would attack you right away! What? Do they have sattelites and radios?

- Ridiculous levelling system

If Fallout 3 doesn't have all that I may end liking it. And looking at the great post-apocalyptic landscape maybe it could end up being a great game, but I'm not very sure yet. Anyway I think that even if it is a very good game I don't think Fallout 1 and 2 fans will be pleased with it because it is too different and like another game really. FO 1 and 2 would like it if it was more like the evolution from Diablo II to III.

What you so called 'hardcore fallout' fans fail to recognise is that fallout should not and does not live or die on the turn based combat system that, from what i can tell, is the only reason any of you are shunning the new release. I have been playing and replaying the fallout series from when they were first released and have been waiting for this game for nigh on 4 years now. What i am trying to tell you 'fans' of the series that fallout is so much more. The freedom, the witty dialog, the ability to choose your own path. There are so many different and wonderful aspects of fallout that just because one has been altered does not mean that this game will not be the best in the series so far. Look at tactics, that had the turn based or real time combat option and both kinda blew. Fallout relies on its fans and if you cant look past the differences that this game has in comparison to 1 and 2 and at least give it a go then you can barely call yourself a fallout fan....

Ehm, no it wont. Fallout 3 is set in Washington, D.C. Oblivion is set in a fantasy world.

Got my copy 2 days ago on Steam. I wasn't too excited about this game because I actually thought it would be mediocre, but I'm pleasantly surprised. The dialogue and most of the dark humor we know and love from the Fallout series is gone, it still retains a little bit of dark humor, just not as much. But the gameplay is surprisingly addicting.

Also, I have too many games to play, from Dead Space to Far Cry 2 to Fallout 3. lol

I agree man, to many good games to play right now (Fallout3 and farcry2 have been very surprising) and in the future (Left4Dead mainy on PC and Gears Of War 2 for 360)
