Since I don't think Fallout is the best RPG ever made (never played F2 though), I think this game can be a great title. Those pics are stunning. Hopefully they preserve that Mad Max-atmosphere that F1 had, the shot with the dog clearly shows that they are going for something like that.
As for the gore, meh. Seems like a gimmick. Hope they use more time on NPC-interactions than on 100 ways to dismember your opponent. I want a game that is deeper than Oblivion with guns. Both when it comes to dialog/story and when it comes to consequences to your actions. Don't screw this one up, Beth.
Jesus, that looks amazing. The reason I loved Oblivion was because I didn't think of it as a roleplaying game, but as a world to experience. It looks like at the very least, Fallout 3 will give a similar experience, so it's definitely an exciting game for me. And with the possibility that it will be a good roleplaying game, well, it's very exciting.
I hadn't seen those pictures but, uh, can I... can I castrate you anyway? It's a hobby of mine, see, and I'd, uh... well... yeah?

Fallout has always had its fair share of gore though so i guess thats one way its close to the previous games. As for deeper than Oblivion with guns i really hope so because Oblivion is about as shallow as they come.
I really wish they allowed for more than 3 dialogue options. I can see it now... a good, bad, and neutral choice for everything. That wouldn't be good if you ask me. I remember when I played Mass Effect and it was that way, I didn't like it whole lot. Who knows, maybe they will get it right.Since I don't think Fallout is the best RPG ever made (never played F2 though), I think this game can be a great title. Those pics are stunning. As for the gore that was a part of Fallout before, it wasn't pretty when people got huge holes in their bodies. I don't know though, it could be gimmicky, gotta see more of it.
There is a little problem here,i've played "Oblivion" and i didn't like it.It had a very attractive appearance, but the game was a total waste.
Now what?! Will "Fallout" be different?? A mulit-platform game?!?! A CONSOLE GAME??!?!?! WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?!?!
You people look like pigs going straight to the slaughterhouse!!! Haven't you guys noticed that "Bethesda" is behing everything??!
I have a total respect towards "The Elder Scrolls" chapters, but "Oblivion" was atrocious.

You realise that Morrowind is a multiplatform game, too, right? So is The Orange Box. A game being multiplat doesn't automatically make it bad, and it's ridiculous and narrowminded to think otherwise.

Okay, but you're publicly stating that you think Team Fortress 2, Episode 2 and Portal are terrible games. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to pull up a very long list of many more very excellent multiplat games.
One of the best games I've ever played, a game I consider better than either of the Half Life games, is actually a port of an Xbox game - Escape from Butcher Bay.

Yeah, but I tend to turn the gore down to minimum in Fallout. It's easier to loot enemies after you've killed them. But you do have a good point. Guess gore is a big part of those games. It's just not all that important to me or at least it won't be my biggest complaint if they screw the game up. Enemies could fall down in the most boring ways you could imagine, I would not care if I knew that the reason behind this is more time spent on dialog and lots of ways to influence the world around you. Cool combat is fun and all, but I kinda expect a little more story this time around. Oblivion's was a disappointment.

you mean like rocky mountain oysters? montana tendergroins? cowboy caviar? never had human before but i did have sheep once (don't ask :) ); tasted like tofu.
anyway, in regards to the graphics, they just don't have the fallout feel. they're amazing looking, of course, but fallout had that cheekiness to it, and the graphics reflected it. there was nothing scary about the game; it wasn't meant to be so dark and gloomy as bethseda is making it look; it wasn't about just gore and blood but about cartoon, over-the-top gore and blood. it was dark but it was cartoonishly and almost comically dark. these screenshots only confirm that bethseda has absolutely no clue as to what fallout was all about. they're just taking a franchise and oblivionizing it.
a damn shame that!

you do realize that orange box and morrowind were developed for PC LONG before they were ported to consoles right?Okay, I'll give you that for Morrowind, but not The Orange Box. There was a simultaneous PC/360 release, and what is a pure multiplat title if not a simultaneous release? And yeah, Call of Duty 4 and 2 are both fine examples of excellent multiplatform games.
But it takes only one excellent multiplatform game to prove my point. A game needn't be reduced in quality because it's a multiplatform title. A game needn't be dumbed down because it's a multiplatform title. A game needn't be shallow because it's a multiplatform title.
That multiplatform titles often are shallow and dumbed down is tragic, but you surely understand the distinction between something being something through the choice of the developers and something being something through the limitations of the system.
A game can be developed as and released as a multiplatform title and still retain all of the depth and everything else that it may have had as a PC exclusive. I'm not saying that that's how most multiplat games are developed, I'm saying that that is how all multiplat games can be developed. Assuming that a game is doomed because it's a multiplatform title is, to that end, wrong. Arguing that multiplat games stink is perhaps justified by numerous example, but it's not some inherent and undeniable truth.
Oblivion wasn't a bad roleplaying game because it'w as a multiplatform title, Oblivion was a bad roleplaying game because Bethesda made bad choices, possibly because it was a multiplatform title. Bethesda didn't have to make those choices, they chose to make them. If they can choose to make them, they can just as easily choose not to.

no, i was referring to the comic book stylings of fallout. these lifelike graphics don't convey any of the cheekiness that the original games did through their art style. even the characters looked cartoonish and the monsters were way over the top. and certainly the blood and gore were so outlandish that you couldn't take them too seriously. know what i mean?
Huh. Those look awful. And is it just me or does it look like Dogmeat is the same model/texture they used for dogs in Oblivion?
The character models and view distance are good but everything else looks made to run on a last-gen game console. And what is with the terrible lighting, is that Bethesda's bloom fetish at work again?
And please tell me that green thing getting it's leg shot off isn't supposed to be a supermutant. It looks like a friggin Orc.

Fireandcloud, I recently watched the opening sequence in Fallout and I have to say that when it comes to the surroundings and the postapocalyptic atmosphere in towns, I think those screenies capture the feeling of the old videos perfectly. I agree on the enemies though. They are a little too "realistic", but it's a necessary evil imo, you can't have realistic environments and then have a lot of cartoony characters running around.
I think most 2D games look cartoonish no matter what style they're going for, if Interplay had the technology that's available to us today (which would rule), who knows, maybe they'd go for a more realistic, gritty look...
