By the time I got around to both sequels I was bored of the same structure; so, yes, to me they were mediocre because they mostly copied what had already been done. Hardly something I'd highly praise.

Under the name Obsidian Entertainment, NWN2 and KOTOR2 are the only games they've fully developed and have published. Neither one were better than the original or, for that matter, really that great, which is why I say they're mediocre. They've followed in BioWare's footsteps twice and neither one surpassed the original.

Yes, I play and own both games as well as BioWare's games.

Planeforger

I'd argue that both were much better than Bioware's originals (KOTOR 2 is debatable - everything is better except for the butchered endings), but it really doesn't matter - both Bioware and Obsidian are easily better than Bethesda, who've lately just churned out Oblivion (terrible) and Fallout 3 (bland).

Oh, and personally, I think that Obsidian's NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer was a better RPG than anything Bioware has released since BG2, so they've certainly got the potential for great games.

Hum...lot's of people disagree with you there along with many of critics reviews. The games aren't perfect, but no game is. I wouldn't say Obsidian is better than Bethesda because they've only copied BioWare's games. BioWare is a great mentor, but it requires a great studio like BioWare or Bethesda to be creative on your own.

They should use the Infinity Engine! ...Can't we al dream? Voted turn-based isometric. Duh! But I don't reckon it'll happen; BethSoft wouldn't let 'em. Maybe they'll use the Electron engine? Hopefully.

Let's be honest, we can see from the marketplace that this game is going to be similar to Fallout 3 for it to come out in 2010, probably using the same voice actors AGAIN, making a lot of the NPC's unbelievable as characters AGAIN and just like the first DLC, is much more likely to be about fighting than roleplaying.

For goodness sake, if you have been in gaming for 10 years or more, could you have foreseen games like Mass Effect and Jade Empire being called RPG's, when back then we would have called them 'action-adventures'. It shows how far down the roleplaying genre has gone, and as sad as I am to say it, I think deep Baldur's Gate/Planescape Torment/Morrowind type RPG's are going the way of flight sims.

You can see with the likes of Oblivion, Mass Effect and Jade Empire, to name just three titles, the impact of having multi-format title releases. Everything seems to be falling to the lowest common denominator - which is every game being an FPS Shooter with light Roleplaying elements (inventory, NPC conversations). This seems to me the future of roleplaying. Only if you are an FPS shooter fan are you likely to be looked after, the rest of us will have to rely on what we have in our collection or re-buying those older games we loved and somehow lost....!

Criticising an RPG for being first-person is like criticising Fallout for being isometric like Diablo.

New Vegas, even if it keeps the same gameplay, WILL be much better because Obsidian has great writers. And as Planescape demonstrated, an RPG can get away with terrible gameplay if it has good story and characters.

Neverwinter Nights 2 had a terrible and buggy start but its campaign is ten time better than the original (which was simply there to put something aside the editor). And Obsidian has, unlike some developers, great post purchase support so patches are issued even to this day. And fully patched NWN2 offers a great RPG experience. And two expansions were, IMO, great. Storm of Zehir is a return to old school games while Mask of the Betrayer is one of the best story driven games I have played in the last few years.

KOTOR 2 has it flaws but basically it's a rushed and unfinished game. Nevertheless it gave the players a unique, gray vision of the Force and it tried (and succeeded) to be different. I think I finished it at least four times and that Kreia-Jedi Masters dialogue still gives me the chills.

I don't know how Vegas will turn out but I am sure in a few things: better storyline than F3, better dialouge than F3 and more interesting sidequests (actually, come to think of it, anyone can beat Bethdesa in these areas) and we might even get better/non-Elder Scrolls voice acting.

Still I have to say Bethdesa positively surprised me by giving this project to Obsidian.

I agree about story... But Torment doesn't have poor gameplay, IMO. I think they perfected Baldur's Gate, and while the battle were a bit Diablo, the interface was farf better and a lot of issues were cleared up. The gme is overall more streamlined IMO. BTW, Obsidian are partly made of Black Isel guys... So here's hoping we get an awesome story! =)
