My 4870 X2 gets hot, sometimes to like 93 degrees. I have a 700W Power Supply and I don't have any extra 8pins, so I just used a 6 to 8 pin converter. As a result I can't get the overdrive to work, since the converter is not a true 8pin adapter.

Is there any other way I could make the fan spin a little faster? Or do I really need to get a new PS?

thanks

93 degrees celsius is normal operation range for the HD 4800 series of products. Access to overdrive does not control fan speed. Wait for the Catalyst 8.8 driver, there will be fan tweak for the HD 4800 series of products. In the meantime there is a fan fix for HD 4800 cards floating around by editing your Catalyst profile. I'm sure you can do that with the X2 as well, and it's a good temporary fix until something official comes along.

Ray Adams is adding support for the 4800 series in ATT. It's still in beta.
