So, I have seen interviews, trailers, and gameplay videos of Far Cry 3 at E3, and before, and I don't get why there should be an emphasis on insanity. It's fine if the main bad guys are insane, because that is common in games, but it looked like you eventually go insane too. So, do you eat some bad mushrooms and start thinking you are the main bad guy? That sounds like a Fight Club ripoff. This is a shooter, not a psychology class. I think the devs might have gone too "insane" with this.

It's plausible, I forgot the exact term used to describe this, but why is it so hard to believe a guy that came to party on some island or w/e that was, had his friends killed and is on the run from guerrillas and such, getting into all kinds of traumatising experience, somehow gets insane on the way when there are so many cases of soldiers going insane from their experiences, literally insane, that in some of their "phases" hurt people around them even kill them, shoot people randomly with their gun(s)?

The insanity that Vaaz is referring to in the original trailer, is a popularized expression originally exclaimated by Einstein, basically saying that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity. In a transferred meaning you could say it implicates that both Vaaz and the player are insane for consistently trying to killing eachother

The protagonist wanting to save his friends from a crazy island dictator, ok. I can get behind that storyline. I just don't know about the "let's examine the nature of insanity" thing. Then I saw the E3 trailer where the protagonist enters the bad guy's house, and there are all kinds of colored lights, and TV screens showing all kinds of images. Then, the main bad guy is asking you to shoot him on a dance floor, and suddenly his face turns into yours at the last second. It is like they are going for this weird Fight Club angle. I have to give them points for creativity, but at the same time I also laughed out loud at the absurdity of some of the trailers. We'll see what they are trying to do with this game.

Honestly, it's dumb. The gameplay will probably be dumb, too.

Nihilism and the descent into savagery.

The shrooms are a secondary element.

In other words, you don't want games to present complex themes and and character development and would rather just go play a Michael Bay-fest with no attempts at breaking the mold or telling a good story?

Games are art, but apparently some gamers don't want it to be.

Good to see that some of the gaming community are now wising up to this stuff.

To me and to most of you it would appear that Ubisoft is using smoke and mirrors (insanity, 4 player co-op and now a naked woman) to disguise yet another weak attempt at Crytek's successful blueprint which Ubisoft has failed at time and time again.

Expect more subpar gameplay, never ending re-spawning enemies... and boobs.

I would rather have a good, solid shooter than an odyssey into the nature of insanity. The theme can be overdone. If they throw the theme of insanity in your face the entire game, it loses realism, and it becomes absurd. The trailers already look laughable. Watch there be dream levels after you eat a certain mushroom.

The game looks awesome to me. One of my most anticipated this year, in fact.

Everyone in entitled to their own opinion, but I think analyzing and judging a game to the degree that has been done here in this thread (long before the game has even been released, no less) is more than a little ridiculous.

The real problem is that for some reason gamers are only capable of binary judgment nowadays. People should analyze a game as much as they like but it would be nice if there was something between 0 and 100 on their quality scale.

Lol...if you think these are complex themes or interesting character developments - I doubt anyone values your opinion on art.

You seem to have completely shot past my point just to insult me with your own personal opinion. Honestly, if people act like this when a game franchise actually attempts to try something different, to cover a different angle with storytelling and characterization and people just shoot it down before they even try it then, well, I'm ashamed of gamers.

If you aren't excited for it I can understand, if you don't think the story will be good that I understand, but if you say its too weird and you don't understand it and you don't want it then that's saying the wrong thing. That's saying "no I don't want anything new I won't understand, get me more of this old crap I do understand".

But since you missed my point I doubt you'd understand;)

Well, it does fit the setting and theme. So it makes sense... versus an alien takeover. :P I'm hoping for a crazy plot twist..

I know we won't be seeing Brody turn out to be Vaas the whole time since that would be too obvious and is the sort of thing even OP predicts would happen, so it won't happen, but I am interested in seeing how they pull off the insanity affecting the main characters and the others on the island.

I feel like that leaves a lot of room for moral ambiguity, which could really make for some nice open storytelling and potential multiple endings.
