Hey guys. I'm typically an RPG guy but I am starting to feel really jaded and burnt out. I think it's my completionist/perfectionist playstyle I've gotten into the habit of recently that makes it not so much fun. Or perhaps I am just growing out of gaming, which I hope is not the case.

Anyway, I am here to ask for advice on games in different genres. I am thinking that maybe if I play something where I'm not worried about making huge choices or micro managing or exploring/talking to everyone, I'll chill out a bit and have fun. I don't know anything about other genres, but I have a pretty kickass computer that can handle just about anything on max. I'd like to get maybe a shooter or adventure game... I'm open to anyting but racing. If I get a shooter, I want to get something newer yet still a classic so I can try online play. Not the burnt out Call of Duty that everyone played for a month and moved on from. The only shooter I've ever been a fan of was C&C Renegade because of the bases. I digress...

Any help?

My favorite adventure game series of all time. I can't recommend them enough to people. Wonderful mix for adventure, rpg and a great sense of humor.

My favorite "chill out and have fun" game is cRPG for Mount&Blade Warband. It's a multiplayer mod where you level up a character and earn gear through playing 'Sieges', 'Battles', and duels. The only choices you have to make is deciding which build you want to make (1-hander, 2-hander,shielder, archer, etc.). The fighting in the game is fun and much more intricate than it may first appear. The gameplay is rather unique, which is what makes it a breath of fresh air for me. Reminds me of Counter-Strike, except you don't have to worry about randomly dying before seeing the enemy. It has a very tight-knit community which is nice as well.

As far as shooters go, I've been having a lot of fun with RO2 since the latest patch. I hated it before. Now its my favorite shooter. They put a lot of cool ideas in that games mechanics that you won't find in other shooters.

But the campaign is bad. Its more a long tutorial so the game is all about online play.

Edit:

I'll add that I've been in the burned out phase for awhile. Very few games have been able to grab my interest lately.

The list of games that stood out for me are:

-RO2

-Mount and Blade warband

-terraria

-legend of grimrock (I sort of got bored with it and haven't finished.)

-Witcher 2

I've been playing a lot of games this year, and of all the games I just got this year (Mass Effect 3, Red Orchestra 2, Diablo III), my absolute favorite game right now is Max Payne 3. Its easily the best third person shooter I've come across, mixing new and old aspects of third person games.

Or, take a break from gaming perhaps? I've stopped playing video games for two weeks to start playing some D&D with real-life friends instead.

No...just...no.

Max Payne 3 has nothing in common with 1&2...and it is a Call of Duty clone...1 one 1 clone...the cut scenes are longer the game itself...and everything is scripted everythingggggg...the AI is mediocre...it has nice graphics but nothing special...

Max Payne 3 is a no buy even if is 5$...They destroyed the franchise...why they could not name it anything else othert then MP3?...it has nothing in common with the other two anyways....

Team Fortress 2. Once you understand the game it is a lot of fun to just get on and start killing people or mess around.

Tribes Ascend is ok but the learning curve is even higher than tf2.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto is a fun, relaxing game where you dont have to worry about much.

GTA, go around and kill people

Path of Exile (or any top down rpg). might not be what you are looking for but they can be fun to just get on and kill some things and find loot.

Borderlands. You said you dont want to go around and talk to everyone, you dont have to in this game. If you can put away your perfectionism you will enjoy it a ton. Fun to shoot things, fun to find new weapons, a blast with friends, etc.

So yeah Op, who will you liten to? The several guys who are respectfully telling you about it? Or the one guy who can barely spell and type and calls Max Payne a Call of Duty clone (because apparently slow motion third person shooting with noire storytelling = CoD)?

I think the answer is obvious. Max Payne 3 is easily the best third person shooter I've played, and as far as the gunplay and storytelling its very up to date while retaining what made the others good. Anyone who says otherwise, literally from what I've seen, hasn't played it and they're just acting like asshats because Remedy didn't make it.

If you don't believe us, its got a lot of fantastic reviews, and I'd say its a contender for my Game of the Year this year (though I'll have to see how good Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed III are first).

This is the solution to your problem. If you don't have much to do, try looking into other entertainment mediums like TV shows, movies, anime etc.

If all else fails you can play Portal 1 and 2 :)

If you need something really different I'd say try out Minecraft, Terraria, Ace of Spades, Solar 2, etc. Or heck, try out flash games on newgrounds.com http://www.explodingrabbit.com/games/super-mario-bros-crossover

I highly recommend that you play Peggle (if you haven't already, of course).

Most people that play it describe it as extremely fun/addictive (count me as one of those people) and it is not expensive, so you really don't have much to lose.

If you own an Xbox 360 I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase it for that (for the awesome multiplayer over Xbox Live) but it is also a ton of fun on the PC, as well.

Max payne 3 felt like a die hard movie, they took everything that made max payne awesome and threw it away, the dark atmosphere, the amazing story, interesting characters. Max payne 3 isn't a bad game per se but in my eyes is not a true max payne game, i had to constant remind myself that i was playing a max payne game.

PS. i finished max payne 3 twice (finished my secondplaythrough just 5 minutes ago because the first time i had a bug that made the game almost unplayable plus i couldn't change aspect ratio and graphic settings didn't saved but the lasted patch fixed everything.)

I can't just play one style/genre of game always, or I burnout. Always good to have a few games that are not alike loaded up on your PC. You will get those days were one game just doesn't seem to work, when another hits the right spot. I have RPG's, FPS's, Strategy, and Puzzle games all on my PC so I have choices and not stuck to just one kind. Might help having a mix.

Any help?

Banafiz

Tribes Ascend is my recommendation for a online shooter, and it's also free (the best f2p shooter on the market). You should play some arcade games aswell, which are incredibly fun in short bursts.

Seems like you just want to take a break from games in which you feel more committed. So, go with some pure entertainment, there are countless types of genres to pick from.

Ok, let's calm down, while i don't agree it felt like COD i do feel it wasn't special at all and it lacked everything that made Max Payne special.

Anyways we are way off-topic here so maybe we should discuss this somewhere else.

OP, if you are looking for a game with a good story you could try Alan Wake.

Have you seen this Kickstarter project? I'm playing the demo and it's so much fun!

Thanks, I'm going to try out the demo right now! Always down for supporting a kickstarter adventure game and this one had me at "quest for".

Given he ignored/didn't understand my direct attack on his inability to use punctuation, I'd say more of the latter and less of the former.

Given the fact that no one ever cares or respond on what you guys say/write...i couldnt care less what you write or say :)...you are to insignificant for me to even look at what ur writing...but i made this exception to let you know that no one cares what you guys write on this forum because you are always writing stupid things that no one gives a **** about.

Even if you were to die right beside me screaming in agony: "please iam so insignificant, please pay me some attention already",i would prefer picking up my nose rather then pay you any sort of attention.

My biggest problem was I used to be able to really play through a game beginning to end and have fun with it. Then I played WoW for a few years. Now nothing is the same. I could understand my lack of interest in other games while I was playing WoW, but now that I have not played in over a year I still haven't recovered. I'm like some kind of druig addict where nothing really does it for me anymore.

I think I know just the thing for you. If you like rpg's and shooters, search for the DayZ mod. It's an open-world survival zombie mod for ArmA II: Combined Ops which is like 20-30$. It's probably one of the greatest things I've every played. It's a multiplayer mod that has an exponentionally expanding player base that went from hundreds to 10,000 in a matter of weeks.

I started a thread for it here on the PC forum as well. It's incredible fun. It is slower paced but extremley tense. You have to survive. This means finding supplies, ammo, guns, food, water, etc. to stay alive. It's great fun by yourself or with a group.

There are a bunch of different servers to play on but your character data carries over. If you die, that's it. You re-spawn at a random location on the coast of the continent and have to re-build your arsenal. This may sound tedious but this mechanic works very well and the moments you experience in this game are unreal.

Here's me, a friend, and a goat. We later shot the goat for meat.

I went through the same thing when Sony decided to abort SWG with all of their "improvements". I couldn't enjoy any games. If they hadn't massacred that game I would probably still be playing. Part of it is getting older. As I get older, games don't have the same attraction they did before. Especially single player games. They just can't keep my attention like they used to. I will have fun with some that are unique, but its mostly just to fill time when I'm super bored. Reality is more interesting. Real hobbies and challenges.

Take a break from gaming. Nothing wrong at all with not being interested in gaming anymore. Its an improvement in your life. Me I'm applying to medical school. I doubt gaming will have any part of my future until I'm in a retirement home. Then I'll be sitting right next to you, 80 years old, kicking your ass in some shooter.

Harvest Moon. Seriously, that game is relaxing, yet challenging.

Its always funny when a moron nobody likes says he won't pay people any attention, then he keeps on responding to me and others in butthurt anger.

I highlighted the various choice bits that offer the most comedic value. All poorly written of course.

A whole f***ing family got tortured to death, they stole organs from innocent people and burned the dead ones bodies and left the rest of them to rot in cells. If that isn't noir for you, then you should go talk to a shrink.
