1. How bad are the compatibility issues with certain programs

2. Do I need a antivirus program or just use windows defender

3. Should I wait till first service pack to get it

Same here, I'm waiting for the ATI cards to come out(I still want a nVidia card, tho) and possibly even the prices for quads to come down...as well as sp1. I don't want to drop 2k on the system until I'm sure everything is good to go ;)

I am going to wait a little while before I get a DX10 card. My 7950 Gx2 should run DX10 fine for now.

I have vista ultimate and I have only had 2 compatability problems.
1: Musicmatch didnt work.
2: My antivirus wasnt compatible :( (I had to go online and get a newer version of NOD32 (My antivirus).)
Again I had little to no problems with compatability. I even installed a new HP priter and had no probs.

Use "Vista Upgrade Advisor" to see if any of your programs are not compatible with vista.

No prob, you can download the advisor at the microsoft website.

Or instead of upgrading to vista, you can do what I did.:

Partition your HDD in two. Install Vista in one of the partitions, and leave XP on the other.

Then everytime you start your PC, you are asked which OS to use.

Then you use 64 bit.

What brand PC do you have?

Because if its not custom built, you can go to your site and chat with a tech support person and ask them to verify,

But unless someone corrects me Im pretty sure it usses 64 bit.

Go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD64

They verify what I say.

AMD does use 64 bit.

WHOA there...

Yes, the 7950 GX2 is an excellent card, but unfortunately it does NOT have DX10 capabilities. Only the GeForce 8 Series cards have that. It will not run DX10 at all...sorry buddy.

WHoa hold on there buddy let's not go and confuse the guy. Both Intel and AMD's CPU's are both 32bit with 64bit instruction sets, they can be used on either a 32bit or 64 bit OS's.

Go with 32bit for now there is better driver support for it and you will have less compatibility issues with software.

I use Ultimate and i have had only one problem and thats with a Hp dvd burner causing mad conflicts. I bought a Sony and all is well. The Dream Scene is awesome. I bought Home Premium and then went straight to Ultimate through the Windows anytime upgrade feature that comes with your copy of Vista. This is cheaper than buying the full version of Ultimate and is exactly the same thing. Here is a good list of software compat. If your using Vista you should contribute as well. http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_RTM_Software_Compatibility_List#Games
