First time computer builder, help please

OK so I am building my first computer and i was looking for some advice. I need advice on if I need an audio card, I'm not crazy about sound but if my mobo's on board will be bad the I need reccomendations. Also I need a reccomendation on an OS I heard Vista can be buggy and have security issues. so I was thinking of getting XP but then I cant take advantage of Dx10. and the 64 and 32 bit thing, if that matters. anyways my planned specs are below. and please tell me if there could be compatibility issues with the parts. and if there is anything I should know about them.

For the video card why don't you go with a single ATI 4870, it gives great performance at a very good price, look at some benchmarks to compare.

You don't need a sound card but it will give you a little better performance since it takes some of the load of the cpu. If you can get a copy of XP then go for it. It uses less resources than Vista and is better for gaming. No, there's no "official" DX10 support for XP available but there aren't many games that take advantage of DX10 anyway. So far DX10 has been a dud. Also, there are some unofficial XP DX10 upgrades in the works. Get a 32 bit OS, hardly any software is written to take advantage of 64 bit OSes and a lot of software out there won't work on a 64 bit OS.

Beg, borrow or steal to get an Audio card.....you won't be dissapointed.

Soundblasters (audio card) are cheap.....don't skimp on this important feature. Audio is just as important as video!

9800GTX not DX10, when did that happen?

Good PC but try to get a DVD-WR from LG or Plextor. I had lots of problems with Asus drives and processor wise for a quad core the "sound card gets load off the processor" is irrelevant, but if you want a little more quality to the sound get a sound blaster as somebody already suggested.

i'd get a quad-core processor and a bigger hard drive - 250GB isn't v much these days - you can get a 1TB drive for not that much more and it'll be able to cope however many games, songs, pictures, movies you wnat to have storedjfsebastianII

I am getting a quad. and since i will have 2 hard drives meaning half a TB. I use a laptop for media an it has a like 250 GB total so i think i will be ok and 64 bit it is. thanks for all the help!Cisco13
