I have played way too many FPS's that have sucky flashlights. Half-Life 2 is a great example. I get a gun that can pick up objects and toss them at my foes etc. but my flashlight can't stay lit for more than a minute!?!?! Post your favorite games with great technology and crappy flashlights here!

That's because HL2 sucks anyway.

FEAR had a decent lasting flashlight and so did AvP2.  Do you REALLY expect developers to put in a "Bright Light of God" on your shoulder to see around the dark, scary corners of their FPS?

It's all part of the experience, if you had a huge flashlight beam that lasted forever, it wouldnt be suspenseful running through sewers filled with headcrabs. they did that on purpose to create an atomosphere in the game.

We're forgetting the most illogical flashlight of them all....the one from Doom 3.

"Hold on demon!  Let me put my gun away for a sec, ah, there you are.  Ok don't move, gotta put the flashlight away so I can take out my gun..."

Well apparently by 2012 we'll have flashlights that never die, as STALKER demonstrates.

Well if there is a flashlight problem to behold it's the non-dynamic flash lighting we've seen for years that only a few games have broken from such as Doom 3 or STALKER.  A flashlight should create shadows like any other light source in a scene, and while the rest of the game was incredibly well done on all fronts, I was dissapointed by FEAR's flashlight being just a light source with no dynamic shadowing.  It's about time Source get a real flashlight as well and thank God it'll be more realistic in Episode 2.

Yes, STALKER has the best flashlight i have ever seen in a game, said in the review that the flashlight alone could be commended.

At least the thing had a damn good battery, it created interesting gameplay elements if you ask me. Best use of flashlight in a game for sure.

It's called play mechanics, not reality.

That's the first time I have ever heard anyone utter those words.  And then he goes on to reference FEAR, one of the most boring FPS's in recent memory.....

I know who's reviews I will not be reading.

FEAR's flashlight looked good.... but it had no range.  A real flashlight can illuminate objects more than 6 feet in front of you.

I agree. I though the doom 3 flashlight while not being logical was quite fun and made the game tense.

I think Quake 4 has the best flashlight not only does it look very good but the battery will never drain. Even so with a good looking flashcone it can be quite scary as you see all the shadows and glimts of an enemy. I wouldent call it "game mechanic" if you cant see anything. You become imobile and waiting for a battery to recharge isnt very immersive. I recently played fear and i must say that was the most annoying flashlight ever. For me the game isnt scary and i just wanted to see where the level goes and to stand in the middle of a room in pitch darkness is just tedious, you can fumble around like a old man if you want but that can be quite dangerous and disorientating. I did that a couple of times in various games in a firefight and it usually ended up me falling a few hundred feet down a ledge.

LOL I never realized flashlights pissed people off this much XD. Your supposed to not see that good so the developers can scare you they don't want you to see everything :P.

It was more just supposed to be a funny post, because I haven't played any FPS's for a while and it really makes me laugh that so many games have all of the technically fabulous weapons, but in their universes, flashlights are garbage.
