So my friend is deciding to buy a barebone PC kit (Asus M2N68-AM SE2 Barebone Kit) the link to the kit is here --->http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...6&CatId=332
He's wondering if it's a good deal, if he gets this kit he would upgrade the GPU to either his 9500GT or sell the 9500GT and the GPU in the kit and buy a 9800GT with 512mb of DDR3 video memory
Link to the GPU --->http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...&CatId=3670

So is this a good idea/deal ? Thats 350$ in Canadian for the kit, and another 140$ Canadian for the video card (and if he returns his 9500GT he will get back another $70)

He's also wondering how overclockable the CPU is in the kit.

Thanks for any advice, my friend really appreciates it.

140$ for a 9800GT? He can get a 4870 for a bit more wich will be miles better than that. Or if he wants to spend less,he could get a 4850 for over 100$ wich will still be better than the 9800GT

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the original Phenoms (not the Phenom II's) are not good CPUs. I'd recommend getting this kit. It will utterly destroy that one. (Though I know it is twice as expensive)

What's so bad about Phenom I? He wants to play games like L4D and GTA4 with steady frames (so I guess a better graphics card would be good) but is the CPU going to hinder any of his gaming? And for getting that second kit, my friend lives in Canada and 720$ USD to CAD is like 780$.

Are Phenoms bad, or just weaker in comparison?

The Phenom Is were flops essentially. They weren't even around, what, 6 months or less.

I don't care if it was a flop or not. Is their performance that much worse tan the IIs?

its only 2.3ghz the phenom I series was bad they are bad overclockers put out alot of heat and clock for clock are much slower then intel quad or core duo at same speeds. a 2.3 ghz phenom I is a slow processor indeed he'd be better of for gaming getting a higher clocked dual core processor from eithier amd or intel. and defiantly get the 4870 instead of the 9800gt much faster.

The Phenom IIs are up to 15% or more faster than the Phenom Is.

OK he said he would get the 4870 rather than the 9800GT, but are sure the CPU is that bad considering he will not overclock it?

Well the 9600 is a pre-revision model. It will probably be ok, but you generally can get something that will perform better and for less.

But my friend is on a very tight budget so this is the best deal he can find. Do you think it would be good for playing games like Call of Duty or Left 4 Dead?

It will play those games just fine, what part of canada are you in?

Yeah the original phenoms do suck. Well then he can go to NCIX, there's even a forum there that'll help him make use of their weekly deals and make a good build. (also for $20 they'll build it for him if he's nervous about it) No, not advertising, just saying.
