Hi.

The way i know it, DX 10.1 is an update of 10 version with some improved features, but is it a complete milestone?

Frostbite 2 engine based games like the newly released Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run require DirectX 10 Nvidia or DirectX 10.1 AMD graphics cards.

I have an AMD mobility HD 2600 (R600) which is DX10 and suppposedly i cannot play any of these games. I know the trend is to always upgrade your hardware but i'm talking about a notebook here, so it's a little more problematic than a $150 component.

I was reading on Wikipedia about a revision (die shrink) of the R600 chipset (RV670, RV635 and RV620) to support DirectX 10.1 and i was curiuous in which way i could make my graphics card support DX 10.1 also. Maybe a firmware upgrade will do the trick? Or special - moded - drivers?

You basically can't do anything unless you buy a new rig. The 2600 can't even handle dx10 properly, let alone it being able to play either of those 2 games.

The problem isn't with API support, it's with sheer pixel-pushing power. Your graphics chip doesn't have enough grunt to play a game like Battlefield 3.

OK guys, thanks for the replies.

Actually I was able to play most of the games released till now, including the Crysis series, CoD MW3 and such, but i guess it's a deadline in front with Frostbite written al ofer it :) The laptop will most probably remain used for office work and i'll buy a gaming machine.

Thanks again.
