Bad Company's new Frostbite 2 engine vs Crysis CryEgine 2 who wins?

I know technically the CryEngine 2 is superior over Dices new Frostbite 2 Engine. But it pains me to say this as a crysis fanboy but i prefer the Frostbite 2 Egine. Its easy on the hardware despite looking amazing. The HDR sound effects are incredible and the physx tho not as realistic as the Cryengine are more fun to play with.

A better comparison would be between MW 2 and BC 2 since the engines look pretty much the same, it's a joke to compare it with CE 2.

I wondered when this comparison would be made.

When I started up Bad Company's single player I too was impressed at the graphics and the similarities between it and the cryengine 2. It was the first time since playing crysis that I saw an engine that was comparable and surpirsed that not many have made much mention of it, at least on the PC. Yeah, the physics aren't as realistic and the overall technical accomplishment probably also isn't as great, but the package as a whole certainly is worthy as a contender for 2nd best pc graphics.

Frostbite is weaker but makes better use of the scripted physics and environment destruction to take advantage it in the gameplay. I'm talking about the mp. I would love to see in the Crysis 2 multiplayer the same degree of interactivity. Honestly, will be very hard to play another mp without environment destructibility after BC 2. The amount of deep that adds to the amusement is too much to be ignored.

Can't agree on its ease on hardware. Its performance to visual fidelity ratio isn't anywhere near that of Crysis on the high end. Its DX10 optimization is pretty terrible (looks mostly entirely identical without HBAO yet performs notably worse), HBAO gives a nice, minor visual improvement but floors the performance even beyond what just running in DX10 does. Also, mouse input lag takes effect at much higher framerates in this game than in most others (V-sync off). Where the mouse responsiveness in most games doesn't start to decrease substantially until you get to 25-30 and below, in this game it becomes a small hindrance at about 35-40 and below. Far Cry 2 had the same problem. This coming from someone who finds an average of 30-35 in Crysis very playable and smooth.

Its optimization when maxed out in DX9 is quite good it seems, but at that level it only looks comparable to something like Crysis on a mix of medium and high settings (not that DX10 with HBAO looks much better, it's a very minor visual improvement for performance a little worse than Crysis maxed out). Not to say it's not a well-crafted and nice-looking game at that level, but it's really nothing special if you ask me.

o_0 so wait those games are great only because we have great hardware and the engine is nothing great? then if we didn't have great hardware, Crysis would look just like Mario? The engine is everything and it needs good hardware to run :/.

Because it uses Havok, and that's a dedicated physics engine.

Frostbrite 2's Horizon-Based Ambient Occlusion really had me. It makes the game look just as polished. For those of you scratching your heads about HBAO, Ambient occlusion basically adds dark values to areas that are enclosed or where they logically should have a gradience of darkness and adds more realism to the visual. So when saying Horizon-based, meaning that it generates ambient occlusion on the spot ( I noticed that when players huddle walls, AO geneartes ).

Usually most games pre-generate the AO. But the CryEngine is sorta somewhere in the middle of normal AO and HBAO.

I find the lighting in frostbite 2, especially when running in the jungle, to be very eye-candy. Still doesn't mean I don't like CryEngine though.

frostbite is a better engine, Crysis multiplayer skips around it's prob prettier but the Frostbite is more effiecent and the vehicles work better.

Meh, I like the visuals of the frostbite, but on a technical level... it's not that impressive. I say this because the destruction is limited and a lot of the cool effects seem to be 'placed' instead of rendered by the engine. For example, sometimes you'll see 'placed' sun shafts due to lighting. These aren't due the engine, but placed by developers during the making of the map. The graphics and physics are definitely well suited for this game. The developers certainly put a lot of time into figuring out how to make this game look and run like a dream.

Crysis, on the other hand, is almost entirely done by the engine and very impressive on a technical level. It's impressive all-around, except the physics hardly affect the gameplay at all, unlike BC2.

It's hard to explain, but you'll know it when you see it in-game.

the cry engine does it right, it has a real working in game physics and is a lot better at chipping away realsticcly however the scripted bc 2 wins handsdown in overall destruction even if it has little realisim.

i see the frostbite to be the better option for xbox and ps3 games due to the weaker hardware as it allows multiplayer madness abiet a little scripted it can make a great workable game which is eye candy although static.

Crysis2 seems to have a lot more smaller scale destruction and is a better pc choice as it can front the power to have proper physics and to have a monster. Of course crysis is better overall but in terms of console gaming i will have to give it to bc2 for dumbing it down and making it playable on the consoles, still we will have to see how crysis2 deals with the consoles..

CryEngine II is still on top, the whole engine runs extremely smooth, and its one of the few engines that started to use particles. It looks, sounds and feels amazing!

You're telling me that most don't even have a crappy 7600 to play it on "medium" at a low resolution (like 1280x740)? Most people that have at least a mainstream dedicated graphics card can play Crysis on good enough settings, but most people are too proud to do that even if they know their crappy PC can't possibly handle it maxed out.

Agreed, I just played a bit of BFBC2 single player and the graphics maxed out are NOT EVEN CLOSE to the the original Crysis, - Crysis 2 however is pretty pathetic.

Of course, C2 has no sand and ocean, so the graphics aren't better, makes sense. It also makes sense to think that before those improvements, the features that got improved already made Crysis 1 look pathetic (buildings and detail).

After the update C2 is easily better than Crysis graphically, all crysis really has over it is the a different preference for artsyle, scale, interactivity and maybe character models.

Art style preferences. The whole setting is boring to look at and the aliens changed for the worse IMO. I absolutely hate the new Nanosuit design and the gun models suck.

I never said it wasn't better than vanilla Crysis. It is, but modded Crysis still wins. Yeah it has better tech, but having the better tech doesn't mean it automatically looks better.

Theme doesn't automatically make it better looking either and mods don't change a thing, they only bring it closer to Crysis 2 (vanilla that is).

Crysis 2 vanilla was a joke. Nothing about it was impressive. One of the things I hate most are low-res and ugly textures. Crysis wasn't even that bad with them, but Crysis 2 was. EIM, in combination with a few other mods, makes Crysis still the best looking game today.

It's called preference. A lush jungle setting on an island is far more interesting to look at than the corridor streets in NYC.

A mage of the undead, the Necromancer raises the living dead to fight for him. His dark powers can call on zombies and skeletons to inflict fear and death on his foes. Clad in robes, he puts enemies to sleep, poisons them, and can even steal the life from their souls.

It's also funny how people are saying that BC2 uses Frostbite Engine 2 when in fact, it's using Frosbite Engine 1.5. Also, Necrothread is smelling bad now :/
