I went there and I would go there again.... Yap... LOL.
I didn't trust the service up until I bought the OB about a year-and-a-half ago. Since then, I've really really liked it, bought many games on sale and have even gifted a few. I love it. I've also kept copies of all my receipts, so in the event that Steam ever goes down, I'll harass the publishers/developers for my copy.flipin_jackassDon't worry, you'll be dead before Steam goes down...
Of course its a "staple" in the % of PC game sales , because steam is usually the only option there is when one gets the PC version. it gets that way when its forced on customers.Rememeber when Steam use to be absolutely hated??? Funny how things change... Steam has definitely had a ruff start in the eyes of PC gamers, but wow look how far it has come. I just think its funny how Steam has gone from hated to coveted by PC gamers. I have to admit I am one of the converted. I use to hate steam with a passion andnow I absolutely love it!! Any old schoolers sticking with the hate on steam these days?

I have never had a single problem with steam. I will wait on games just for a steam sale unless it is a must buy. It really can spoil people.
I used to hate it before it got fixed. For the first year it wouldn't save History, Favorite, and Friends, so i basically had to connect to the server i wanted to play on by entering the address in the console. I did it so many times that i still remember it 4 years later.
Now that everything is fixed and there are more games to buy on Steam I think it is a great platform.
I prefer retail copy as well. If I could find one for the same price as a good steam deal, or as little as $5 more, i will still buy the retail box.. But Steam is truly great because their deals can sometimes be impossible to beat.Steam is great for online purchasing. I like harcopies, but with deals like these how can I ignore it :P.

Wasn't it WoW....? (lol)Steam is the best thing that happened to the PC games industry in years. It pretty much single handedly keeps it alive nowadays.
You'd think with all the money Valve is swimming in thanks to it they'd get to Episode 3 already though! :)

Last sentence is true hehe.. but I love Valve still. Valve is like Blizzard in a sense that, they announce something when they are "ready" to announce it, and they release a game when it's ready. :) And most, if not all the times, they release quality games that are full of win.Steam is the best thing that happened to the PC games industry in years. PC gamers are so fickle they forget anything that had happened years ago let alone weeks ago. If steam were to SomeHow have constant crash and lag they would quickly forget how much they love it now, just always living in the moment.
I remember when it just came out through steam beta it was very simple and I think it was solely tested with cs 1.6 beta. When steam just stepped out of its beta and into the official phase was when the hate peaked though. Each update got glitchier or laggier that it was unbearable to login to its interface. Steam used a lot of resource(ram) back when computers only had about 512 to 1gb on average. However this was all back at 03 and 04 since then it just got smoother.
I'm an early adopter, of most things really, I never got the "hate" it always seemed like an amazing idea to me. Now, if only I would invest in these things, so far I've called Steam/Netflix/Google.

Don't feel bad about steam, sadly it is a private company.
[QUOTE="Baranga"]Valve complete is 50 dollars and 50 Euros:(
I know publishers set the prices, which makes it even weirder since they started screwing Europeans just two years ago.
FelipeInside
LOL, you think $50 is a rip-off...? Come down under.... No, he thinks 50 euros is a rip-off. It seems like Steam thinks that $ = Euro, which isn't even close to correct. I think $50 is about 35 euros. The only europeans they dont rip on are people from UK.
Apart from that i love it!

I doubt they will do episode 3. I think it will be Half Life 3 next.
I dont use steam unless i have to. And i dont like steam as i like physical copies of the games i own.
Note: Im not saying steam is a bad service, i simply wont use it anyway :P
Its not just because of the sales of cheap games, Valve have had a long and dedicated relationship with the PC platform and are one of the few developers left that have stuck by the PC and havent sold out to consoles. PC gamers love Valve and Gabe Newell is really Santa Clause. Steam never really offered anything new in the begining, it was very buggy and we had other things like Mplayer and Gamespy, now steam has pretty much taken over because its the best at what it offers to the gamers.
I prefer Impulse and GamersGate to Steam.
I don't like the idea that if my internet provider is working on the lines (meaning no internet) then I can't play my games.
A least with the others I can run my games even if the internet is down.

Um, you can run steam in offline mode, so you can still play your games if your internet goes down.

God I'm starting to feel old thinking back when Steam released. All I can say is that when it released, I didn't like it. I was customed to being able to install my games from a disc and launch the singleplayer without ever having to touch a client. Then CSS moved onto it and then HL2 released with it requiring activation. I had a sick feeling as my experiences up to this point with it was a nightmare. From slow update speeds, to server lists never refreshing, to steam being unavailable at times.
However, Steam has matured into a wonderful service. It is the first place I look to purchasing my games and the sales, oh the sales! As of right now, I can't imagine living without Steam but it doesn't erase the hours/days of mucking around I had to do to get it working.
I don't think that 80% include download console games however. That's just download vs retailer PC games. The last PC game I bought at a retail was WoW:Wrath of the Lich King. Speaking of STEAM, does anyone know how to change the default drive when downloading the games? I want to install my games on my D: drive, but it keeps defaulting to the C: drive. Now the other online retailers despise steam hehehe. Think steam owns like 80% of the market for buying games online. Hard to compete with a company that sells games for 2 dollars.

Ah, and VAT still gets charged on top of the 50 Euros? :(Makari
No. I think only the US D2D applies VAT at checkout. It was a major WTF moment when I wanted to buy a game and at the last screen they added 25% to the price:lol: They should include tax in the displayed price, not at checkout...

You can try this.
The fact that they can shut down your account at any time, for any reason, taking away access to your games, keeps me from using Steam. The problem is that you aren't buying a license for games when you buy Steam games. You are buying a subscription service. It is, legally, much easier to stop a subscription than take away a software license. As a result, it is more difficult to win a lawsuit against Steam if they shut down your account. I guess gamers are too stupid these days to care about their consumer rights.
There are other download services where you are buying a software license, and your account cannot be suspended at will. I haven't researched them all, but I know that GamersGate, GOG, and Amazon Download are good choices. My first choice is always a box with no online activation.
I never hated it, but lots of people did. I honeslty never had any of the problems with steam that people complained about. People sure do love their box collections...

They don't have to charge any kind of sales tax in most of the US (save Washington state itself!)

What are you talking about? Based on what I read, heard, and saw as soon as people got Half-Life 2 to run they could not suck up to Valve and Steam enough. My thoughts exactly. Anything horribly wrong with it?Cheap prices, constant sales and a huge library of games avaliable. What is there to hate?

I can see people chanting:"DRM! DRM! DRM! DRM!"
Which is a poor example really...
I got it the day HL2 released and was one of those raging because I couldn't play THEIR game without an activation. And that activation was having trouble because of volume of users. In hindsight I wonder if they could have known the response much less be ready for it. However once I was activated I never once had another Steam related problem. I still bristled at the new reality of actually not owning that game I just bought but only owning the license to use it. Some day I hope to get over that. I understand it logicly but the right to private property runs deep in my soul and is not easily ignored.
I don't love Steam but I don't hate them either. I look at them as a necessary evil at worst and another tool for my PC at best.
The sooner the practice of selling games on hard copies ends the better. Digital distribution is the way forward in getting a fairer deal for both games developers and customers cutting piracy with non-invasive DRM alongside better provision of services. Death to physical copies and brick-and-mortar retailers!.
Although I agree that digital downloads are the way of the future, nothing quite like walking away from a store with your new precious game in-hand, ready to be installed, with the manual, awesome cover art, and the actual shiny, brand-new game disc. :)The sooner the practice of selling games on hard copies ends the better. Digital distribution is the way forward in getting a fairer deal for both games developers and customers cutting piracy with non-invasive DRM alongside better provision of services.
