I have no idea how or why people could hate digital distribution unless you just love box art that much.

No disc switching.

No clutter.

No discs getting scratched.

In the future the PC will play games on you.As for DD,maybe in the next decade or so when most people have a fast internet connection, some people still use dialup even today because of cost.Once fast internet is cheap as chips they may fully go digital, who knows...

I would like digital downloads as long it doesn't mean that I have to activate the game and stay online to play it. I love the GOG works. They just give you a link to download the game and you are done.

Depends how far into the future we're talking. I'm pretty sure DD is going to take over in the coming 5-10 years; then eventually, as net line speeds increase, we'll end up streaming games without the need for any substantial download. That's my prediction anyway.

Quake Live is already heading in that direction, which I think is pretty cool. Just a short 10-minute set-up, and you're playing Quake III from your web browser.

I actually agree. I'd still want a .exe file or something 'hard' rather than having to download them each time. There really isn't anything keeping me from losing all my games if steam goes down (they probably won't for awhile though).

Reminds me of the movie Wall-E.. Anyways, no digital distribution won't be the wave of the future because believe it or not, ISPs are capping download limits because sites like Youtube are destoying their services. I like drink coasters err I mean discs..

I hope not. DD promotes impulsive buying, you can just get the game with a few clicks and doesn't really give you the feeling when you see lines of games and look at them wondering which one is the best.

Plus I like showing of a big collection of DVD's.

Pretty much yea, as someone who has to move in the next town 20 minutes away to buy games, i embraced digital downloads and so far have been loving it since it's actually cheaper and accessible.

As for the restaurant comments... cmon, that's one hell of a terrible comparison, you go to the restaurant to eat food with people, its a social activity unless you want to order which btw is done by phone (omg it's so less lazy right?), i don't go to a game shop to play with people, i go to buy games and come back home.

I believe that people here who believe in digital distribution live int he US of A, just as I do. If are ISPs are capped, it's pretty high even for cheap services, but other countries don't have our luxuries. Do you know how many PC games are made in the US and how many PC gamers there are? Exactly...I don't either :)

You and his mother must be the only one then. On topic, while I don't think Digital distribution is all that, as I prefer to use the old fashioned way to aquire a game, delete it after some time and install it later on for free thanks to having the Cd placed within it's box. With Digital Distribution I'm pretty sure that if you uninstall a game for disk space then later when you want to play it then you'll have to buy it again. Unless everyone buys external Harddisks and store them full with games. Also the prospect of having to be online to play the games don't really go well with me either, if your Internet goes down then you can't enjoy the games because you'd need the internet connection to play them, Like Mass Effect. But whatever i say will probably fall on deaf ears as Digital distribution would ensure game developers more money and getting money is Alpha and Omaga In the modern day society.

I have no problem with digital download as long as there's healthy competition between services. Monopolies mean less services for customers.

well you don't have to buy it again if you have steam all you do is delete the content and then redownload it at anytime and i love dd so now we don't have to take care of discs like the olds days and worry about scratches and stuff

At some point when it becomes more cost effective to only distribute games digitally I imagine this will be the case, but this could be in 10 or more years. Interesting user name you've got by the way.

Key word: only. A huge segment of the market would no longer purchase games if they were not distributed via retail.

Personally, I think PC gaming will move to a more DD focused market much sooner than people expect. I predict in the next 5 years will see a dramatic shift (we already are seeing it) and off-the-shelf pc gaming will be virtually non-existent. We already are seeing a huge decline in the number of PC games on the shelf and several local gaming shops have removed them completely.

I also think it's a great thing.

You can say that there's a large segment of the market that will not buy PC games by DD, but that does not make it true. There's already a very large market for it and new DD sites are popping up with the already solid DD sites like Steam, D2D, Gamersgate, GoGamer, and others.

I know some of you gamers are so sentimental about box art, manuals, whatever, but DD makes so much sense. It will keep the industry alive and thriving, and I belive will allow for more features and advantages to the pc gamer. To me, boxes, manuals and cds are clutter and a waste of resources.

It's true actually. I have to pay for every 1 GB I download. Extra cost and I have to wait for it to download since I like many don't have a high internet connection.

I agree. I'm 13, been playing games since I was two, and I've never lost a game or damaged one. I have a couple of scratched PSP UMDs, but that's because I'm cheap and bought them used. Also, I like to have a case to the game. the only games that I don't want a disk for are free to play MMOs like Perfect World International, 2Moons, adn Combat Arms. Very fun, and they work with my crappy video card.
