Just looked at the news article on here for Wolfenstein Prequel Pre-Load Now Available, File Size is 37GB.

If it that big because of textures then they should start releasing different sizes of the games these days. Say when you click install you would have options for normal install or ultra graphic install. Just for the people who cant run it on ultra and save time and disk space. Soon it be 100GB average for ultra graphics. What do you think.

StarCitizen is going to end up being about 100GB after it's all done and ready for launch, which will probably be in late 2016 if not 2017. I imagine these numbers will continue to get larger and larger. Luckily storage spaces and prices are move along with it, I don't really believe this will be a major issue in the next decade.

Wolfenstein New Order was somewhere between 40-50 gbs. its pretty messed up because the graphics in that game didn't stand out any better then games that were 5x smaller in size.

You make a good point about them offering different sizes for you down download. If your only going to run the game at 1080p, its a really big waste of bandwidth to have to download 4k textures for a game you probably will never use quality that high.

These big sizes probably hurt digital sales a bit... but on the other side, probably lowers piracy a bit also. My over usage costs are about 1.5 dollars a gig... so if i did download a digital game that big it would cost me over a hundred dollars in bandwidth, plus the cost of the game on top of that.

I also wanted to add I think it also has to do with the way developers are creating their games now. They aren't compressing anything because they don't want to put the load on the CPU, which is silly, if your going to be a pc gamer your going to have a decent CPU. An example would be Titanfall.

Yeah that's quite extrem these days but im sure they are going to find the right midway... they have to unless they want to upset people but my guess is they rather want to get more customers.

Games start to tend more and more into 50-60Gb, to get into the 100Gb it's going to take a long time before you'll have to worry with 1Tb HDD as standart on each computer.

Few things you should know in case you didn't:

  • 4k graphics are coming, means bigger sized games; 8k is on the plan so yeah it'll become even bigger.
  • SSDs are on the way to become a mainstream drives, means you'll be able soon to buy a 2-4Tb HDDs at the price of 1Tb; PCIe SSDs are planned for the future along with 8k graphics so future games with huge sized files won't be a trouble to load fast.

Problem is games are getting bigger at a faster rate than SSDs getting cheaper, lol.....

Game might have to start coming in parts. For example have the base game install at around 30-40GB, and then have different options for bigger installs like "Uncompressed Audio" and "4K Textures" etc. Like they used to have back in the day (Full Install, Standard Install, Limited Install).

I like the idea of different sized textures, but I don't get why any game would uncompressed audio. Decoding an mp3 or flac barely touches a modern CPU. They're be better off offering the sound in a few different formats (e.g. low mp3, high mp3, flac).

they will have to find ways to make them smaller for DD.

surely it would be fairly simple to give the player the option to download only the low res textures if they wish. if the game detects that only low textures are installed then it wont give the player the option to select higher.

its not the storage im worried about. its the BB. 100GB+ is an issue both in terms of the time it takes to download and how much it eats into usage allowances. games that big are simply incompatible with too many ISP options and not everyone can just upgrade to better BB.
