Games crashing. GPU overheating?

GPU is 8800GT. The PC keeps crashing about 30 minutes into games or so. Every game I try crashes. Disk check and Memtest don't show anything. I checked the GPU temps under stress, and it went from 65 under no load to 80 almost immediately after the test started. Is it the temps that cause the crash?

I have upgraded the CPU and mobo since I built this, but that didn't help, so it's not those.

I have this power supply as well, was wondering if this was the problem instead. That and the hard drive and DVD-Rom drives are the only original parts left, so I think I've narrowed it down to either the video card or power supply.

If it is the heat, can you recommend a better GPU cooler?

Open the case and blow out the dust with a can of compressed air.

Ya 65c at idle is a bit much,80c in game is a bit much too, but i wouldn't think the computer would shutdown at 80c.

What type of power supply are you running?, wattage?, brand?

EDIT: nevermind i see what PSU you're using lol, it should run fine.

Yeah, I suggest looking at your power supply. You may have to get a new fan to cool off your GPU.

Well is it his PC that is crashing or is his graphics card crashing giving off the illusion that the PC crashed? My old GPU went bad on me and for a long time i thought it was my computer but it turned out it was the graphics card made it look like the computer locked up.Nick3306

That doesn't seem like an overheating issue then, usually if a part overheats it shuts down the whole system to prevent further damage, and not just crash to desktop.

Have you updated your drivers? as well as made sure the GPU and all other companets are getting cooled well?

Well if it was your GPU it would not restart your computer, or at least I have not heard of this happening yet. But it will shut down your games if it runs to hot and crashes.Nick3306

An overheating GPU can cause a lot of things to happen, system instablilty, in game artifacting and random reboots(to save itself from overheating as i said)

You should RMA the card then, or you can take the heatsink off and give it a good cleaning and apply some new thermal paste and see if that does it for ya.

Test to see if another GPU works in the system if you can, just to make sure that's the definite problem.

Remember it's an 8800, they ran much cooler than most modern cards. 65 idle isvery hot and 80 at load is way more than that card should be. My friend has a 9800GT which is the same core and at load it sits at 55.
