Games for Windows is a new marketing thing that M$ is using to promote PC gaming. Personally it is a great idea. In order for a game to be labeled "Games for Windows" it has to meet a certian amount of requierments (widescreen support, 5.1 audio). Then if it has those it gets stamped with "Games for Windows". In stores they are placed on display shelfs that are much more visual to consumers, also these games get more advertisments.

It is just a way to get more people playing PC games. It is great.

That sums it up. There are no costs. The 1 month for free means that you can give the game to a friend and they can play it for a month for free with a seperate CD key.

I heard that it costs money to play Halo 2 online, but back to the point. I really don't like it taking up the whole box, but other then that it's great that they have to meet certain requirements.
