There are a few people in this thread who want to see a direct movie translation of their favorite game. Why?
Why should anyone agree to be a passive observer by paying to see a movie based on the story in a game when they can go home and be an active participant? That seems like a waste of time and money to me.
The idea for a movie about the fall of Rapture was a better idea. To me the best video game movies will be the ones that try to expand on the story and the world the game creates.

Do you read much? Many of the best films I've ever seen are based on books. Liberties are taken here and there, but generally speaking, the closer the movie is to the book, the better it is. Lord of the Rings, Fight Club, American Psycho - I love reading the books, but then I love watching the films, too. They offer very different experiences that compliment eachother very nicely.
Even if they are essentially the same, even if they tell the same story, they do so in a very different way. The same is true of game and film. A Half Life film, for instance, may tell essentially the same story as the Half Life game, but it would do so in a very different manner. Playing a game is completely unlike watching the film - for games and films are completely different, and one cannot replace the other. I don't see how having played the game would detract from the experience of watching the film any more than having read the book and then watching the film detracts from the experience, even if they are identical.
Indeed, one of the biggest problems with existing game to film adaptations is that too many changes are made to the core story. Resident Evil, Doom, Silent Hill - stupid changes were made to all three which (amongst other things) spoilt all three.
I'm open to the idea of universe expansion - most of the best film to games are universe expansions: Escape from Butcher Bay, Blade Runner, Tron 2.0, etc - but it's not necessarily better the other way around - indeed, there is no evidence that I'm aware of to prove the universe expansion theory true. It seems the more moviemakers deviate from the original game story, the worse things get.
Either way, a film is only as good as its writers, it actors and its director.
