Games i gave 10/10 - None

Reason - No game is perfect. ( espicially not GTA4 :P)

aliblabla2007

I don't wanna seem like I'm targeting you or anything (two arguments in two threads and all), but I really have to question people when they throw out this rationale.

The quality of a game is judged by the standards of the time. As the quality increases, so too do the standards. If a game has never been perfect up to this point, no game ever can be perfect. That makes rating out of 10, when you never will rate out of 10 utterly pointless. It's like putting the maximum score for a quiz at 100%, but having all the questions add up to a total of 90%. That extra 10% will never be awarded, so why is it there?

It also means that people will take it as a given that the highest score you ever give out is effectively your 10 anyway, so you're just back to where you started. Everyone (the reviewer included) adapt their scores and interpretation of those scores to acknowledge some bizzare and romanticised notion that the perfect game is out there, waiting for us...

...but everyone (especially the reviewer) recognise that it will never come. So, again, why is it there? Why even have that giant 10 there if you publicly proclaim that you have no intention of ever using it. You aren't scoring out of 10, you're scoring out of 9.5, or 9, or whatever. But then 9.5 just becomes your 10. You don't need to bump down the whole way down your score-chart since most people will disregard games scoring under around 5 anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to change your mind or anything. But have you ever really thought about your rating process? Because it seems fundamentally flawed to me.

My solution? Change your interpretation of 10. You don't need to rate from pointless to perfect. If you're the reviewer, 10 can mean whatever you want it to mean. To me, 10 means the game offers an excellent experience that is without equal, and it is a game by which the standards of the genre may be judged. The 10/10 game may be flawed, but so what? All games are flawed.

I give you an 11/10.

i second that :P

Interesting you rated Assassins Creed higher than HL2.

Any reason?

I've given the following PC games a 10:

Fallout 2, Orange Box, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Half-Life and System Shock 2

They are by no means perfect but I want to raise my favorite games of all time over the gray mass of 9.5's.

Stalker deserved a 10? Really?

In my opinion, with the Float32 mod and with patches.

i agree, stalker makes up for the few remaining bugs with an overwhelming abundance of awsomeness.

If the yardstick for a 10/10 is a game that completely blew us away and stood head and shoulders above the other titles of its time, then here is my list of Top 10 Games that I give perfect scores (knowing no game is ever truly perfect):

1.) Baldurs Gate 2: Epic game with over 100 hours of gameplay (if you bought the expansion) and the most hilarious inter-personal group dynamics ever. Depending on who you chose to be in your party of 6, you could literally string 4 women along romantically or chase the nice members of your party out by putting chaotic jerks in. Great, great game.

2.) Oblivion: Simply a monster game that gets better with each expansion.

3.) Diablo / Diablo 2: They're a hoot to play, looked great for their time, and remain fun to this day.

4.) Gears of War: Grainy. Violent. Running 'War Cam'. Chainsaw Bayonette. Nuff said.

5.) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Tons of quests, looks great and you can be as vicious or nice as you want (and some of the Jedi powers do shock and awe level damage).

6.) Assassins Creed: A bit controversial to some but the game looks amazing, has a rich detailed and vibrant world and has one heck of a fun single player campaign.

7.) Lord of the Rings Online: Also controversial perhaps, but the game took the best parts of WoW and Guild Wars, and made it its own (or blatantly ripped off some aspects to be honest)...I'm not an 'uber' mmo'er - and LOTRO was built for both ubers or casual gameplayers to enjoy. And it succeeded...it's showing its' age a bit, but it exceeded almost everyone's expectations. It's the game we all hoped Star Wars Galaxies could've been.

8.) Duke Nukem 3D: For its time, it was hilarious and imminently playable. And boasted the most ridiculous lines and voice acting ever.

9.) Mass Effect: Some don't really like this game but I find it huge, interesting and looks great with a ton to do. Terrific voice acting too and lots of varied planetary environments. It's a great game.

10.) Phantasmagoria: Perhaps my most controversial pick because the game had a zillion problems BUT - it used live action video (real actors), it was horiffically gory at times, had an interesting horror plot and tried to do something no other game had ever done...use real actors to create hyper-realism in a video game (allowing you to manipulate a real actor to progress through the story). Did it work? Maybe not to some..but it was a very cool attempt that blew me away and I loved killing my character over and over again to see all the horrid ways she would bite it.

Honorable mention: Rainbow Six Las Vegas, Age of Empires 3, Starcraft, Guild Wars, Civilization, Half Life 2, Neverwinter Nights.

On a more serious note, i'm not saying i'll never rate a game 10/10. If i find a game that i enjoy thoroughly, i'll give it a 10, but i've yet to play one. COD4 came close to getting a 10 from me, but there was something missing(don't ask), so it got a 9.5.

fatshodan

But don't you think that not giving any game 10/10 up to this point is tantamount to saying that you'll never give a game 10/10? I don't know how long you've been gaming, but if a 10 hasn't come along yet, do you honestly believe it ever will? Bearing in mind that as games get better, so too do your expectations and your standards.

Alright alright. If you're so uptight about it, let me go and edit each one of my ratings by +0.5. That way COD4 gets 10/10 from me. YAY! Happy? :P

No game in my book deserves a 10/10.. It also makes me shiver that the TC gave a 10 for both CoD4 and Oblivion.. Some of the most over-rated games of all times, SPECIALLY Oblivion.. I can't evne call that game a rpg.

I just don't see how people can think the game deserves a 10.

Crysis is one of the longest FPS games I've played in quite a while. I spent about 12-14 hours playing it my first time around, and once I was done playing it, I went through replaying the first half (upto Core) several times adopting various different playstyles (stealther/sniper/rambo/etc) - probably for around 35 hours.

After I was done with that, I started learning how to use the (very) powerful editor and I started making my own levels.

I've probably invested around 75 hours into Crysis all in all, and I haven't played a minute of multiplayer. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

The people who disliked Crysis generally played the game through once, as a generic run 'n' gunner, and they rushed their way through, then complained when they didn't enjoy it. That's exactly like throwing all your toys out of the sandbox and then sitting around wondering why you aren't having a great time.

You're telling me when you finished the (short) campaign you actually thought "this is the best game I've ever played, this deserves nothing less than a 10"?

I just don't see how people can think the game deserves a 10.

First, Crysis has one of the longest singleplayer campaigns ever, for a shooter.

Second, it has near-unlimited replayability. I am currently on my twelth playthrough right now.

Third, each time you play it again it can be different.

Fourth, it has some of the best gameplay I have ever experienced

Fifth, it is a technological masterpiece

Sixth, the multiplayer is insanely fun

Seventh, the game has awesome vehicles, from nuclear tanks, APC, helicopters, and VTOLs

Eigth, the game has great guns that react somewhat realistically, from the bullet travel time of the sniper rifle to the wild control of the minigun

Ninth, the game has the nanosuit, which is far far FAR more than a gimmick...it lets you play so many different ways (see Second and Third points above)

Tenth, the game kicks ass

There, ten points each explaining why Crysis deserves a 10/10. Frankly I'd give it an 11/10 if it were possible

Thats exactly my point...Crysis could have been built on the Source or Doom 3 engine for all I care and I would have given it a 9.5 instead of a 10.0

With Crysis, you came for the graphics, but you stayed for the gameplay.

THe visuals were like the icing on top of an awesome cake. It was hyped and people were like "oooh, is that buttercream frosting? Mmmmmm" and then they would dip their fingers and say "Wow, thats good".

But then the cake was sliced, and inside was the most deliscious, orgasmic cake....made with flour milled by God, combined with eggs laid by God's chickens nd sugar squeezed from God's sugar cane fields. The cake was assembled by the angels, and upon completion God said "yay, this is the perfect cake and it shall be known to all"

And that cake was called Crysis.

But enough, this isnt the I Heart Crysis thread.

Lots. I use a 5-star scale. Games that score 5/5 are games that thoroughly impresses me and are extremely enjoyable. Here are the perfect 10s on my ratings profile:

Baldur's Gate 2

Half Life

StarCraft

Audiosurf

I think the reasons are quite obvious.

I'm still mulling over System Shock 2 though, but I'll probably give it a 10.

Mine:

Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Tetris (NES/GameBoy)
Doom/Doom II (PC)
StarCraft & SC Brood War (PC)
Legend of Zelda: OoT (N64)

Nothing is perfect but if I feel a game is transcendent, performs consistently at a very high level from start to finish and has just a few (if that) very minor flaws, I'll give out the ten. SMB and Tetris aren't necessarily among my all-time faves but I think they deserve 10s.

Also I never really thought about this before since I tend to only rate games I own, but now that I think of it, I'd consider giving arcade clas-sics Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man tens too.

No game in my book deserves a 10/10.. It also makes me shiver that the TC gave a 10 for both CoD4 and Oblivion.. Some of the most over-rated games of all times, SPECIALLY Oblivion.. I can't evne call that game a rpg.sSubZerOo

oh come on. i don't rate games on wheter or not they are rpg's or not. thats like going. "oh my god, call of duty isn't an rts, therefore it doesn't get 10/10." also, they are only overrated in your opinion, just like i think that bioshock and wow are hella overrated. I didn't give call of duty 4 a 10 because it was my favorite game of all time, i just couldn't find anything wrong with it, save the short campagn, but the mp made up for that.

oblivion took over gaming for me for almost a year, and i still play it. even though it has lots of flaws, that only brings it down to mortal levels, as apposed to being a 15/10 game.

Come on already. A 10 is a 10 when it kills all other games. I am dating myself, but for instance in 1984 or so, the only games in DOS were like Zork. 100% text based. All of a sudden, out comes Elite. Remember, hard drives didnt even exist then and you had to play them off of floppies. Elite was a space shooter with trading, ship upgrades, etc that played graphically with a joystick. Since then, every flight controlled game is a descendant. It was like the Yankees challenging a little league team. That is the standard for a 10. Problem now is that the industry is so big and every movie gets a game or visa versa. A 10 is a game that changes everything. Not to many recently.

The games i feel come close to a 10/10 are the old classics like Warcraft 2, C&C Red Alert, Duke 3D, Wolf3D etc.

Some sites/publications give 10s out quite liberally to games that are simply very, very good.

And why not? Computer game quality isn't an exact science, and the distinction between super duper awesome and mega super duper awesome is completely moot. If you're reserving the hallowed 10 for some game that you're practically stating won't come (or that its chances of coming any time this decade is very slim), you may as well not rate out of 10.

And that's just a pointless redundancy. No game is going to be perfect - ever. And a game that is so, so far out there that nothing else can compete just isn't going to happen any more. If you've been gaming for over twenty years, you should have learned one thing about the industry - it's that it has changed. A lot. It will continue to change, and it won't ever stop changing.

If your scoring method reflects the state of the industry as it was twenty years ago, well... you're misguided to think that any game is going to come out in this day and age that sends all other games running for cover.

^^thank you. i don't see the point of looking at every game that comes my way with a critical eye, i try to enjoy it for what it is. thats why so far the lowest rating i have given is an 8.0. most games i play get 8.5 or higher. i just always see the best in games. i pity people who have to concentrate on picking out all the flaws in games they play, it must not be very much fun. if youre a critic, it's your job, but as a gamer, i think it takes away from the whole experience. is it really worth it just to go onto the forums and go "but stalker is so buggy, how can you give it 10/10?" because i was so busy enjoying it for what it was i didn't even notice any bugs. i give games 10/10 ratings if they blow me away, and if they keep me coming back.
