Does a gaming headset (like the razer barracuda) actually give an advantage while playing pc games ?

Only when you have TS (TeamSpeak) or something like that, when you can chat with teammates and find out thru them where the enemy team is hiding. ( as an example).  If you do not use the microphone feature, then it's better to have properly placed surround speakers, so you can hear where the opponent is coming from.

As good as a decent set of speakers are - nothing beats a good set of cans when playing a very atmospheric game in a dark, enclosed room....

To be honest, when it comes to "feel" were the enemy is coming, I prefer to use my surround speakers. I use the headset for BF2 (im also on Teamspeak). So in that case, headset give a great advantage...

Otherwise, I just stick to my speakers...

I use my headset only for Battlefield 2. It helps when you communicate with your squad mates on upcoming dangers and assistance in kills, etc.

It's very useful for FPS games. I have a headset and got my butt saved from communication. Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and CSS are good games to have headsets. If you don't spam your headsets, its useful to tell where the enemy is located, if you need a medic or ammo, or if you need a sniper or something. HELPS ALOT!!!!!!!!!!

Zalman 5.1 headsets are great.  Surround sound, and you can turn it up as loud as you want and not bother anyone.
