I was wondering whether there was any point in buying Counter Strike Source if I already have 1.6, because as far as I know, the only difference is CSS source engine and the new achievements and stats system.

Is there really that much difference between the two?

both games are different because of the engine but both are excellent - get it I think they're selling both at the same price.

I don't want to get a game identical to one I already own. Especially because I can get another game for the same price.

CS:S is much better for so many reasons, but at the core it is the same game. It's worth getting if you really like CS and want more and there really aren't any other games you're interested in ATM.

You already have the better game, why downgrade?

Im sorry, but dont get it. The new update killed about 1/4th of the servers. Lag, horrible death animations now, and feels too much like tf2. The problems came from the new update

Yes you should. CS:S is the better game by far, and here's why:

  • Maps have been updated to be a bit tighter and have more cover
  • Many player movement glitches/exploits have been fixed
  • Player scale is slightly larger
  • Recoil has been reduced for many guns, making more guns more useful
  • Bullet penetration is now per material (no more stupid corner spamming)
  • Grenade effects have been greatly improved (more reliable)
  • Tons of other tweaks and fixes

The sum of all these changes is a far more tactical game with more emphasis on strategy, positioning and teamwork than simply being a straight-out gunfight. The "random headshots" that some people mention aren't actually random at all, they're the result of lower weapon recoil, larger player scale and tighter maps. And this is a good thing because it forces players to play more defensively and think more carefully about their decisions.

I have been playing Counter-Strike since the day the very first beta was released, and I will tell you wholeheartedly that Source is the better game. It is, for all intents and purposes, the most current version of Counter-Strike, which means this is the game we were intended to play. I absolutely understand why a lot of players still prefer 1.6, but looking at the two games objectively, there is no reason that I can see to recommend 1.6 over Source.

Definitely get it. In my entirely biased view I love CS:S and still think it's got plenty to offer to both the casual and serious player. I would also play it any day over 1.6/CZ.

It's just a shame you missed it the other day when it was really cheap.
