Ok I'm trying to decide whether or not to get Elder Scrolls IV. I'm really into RPGs obviously, but don't want to (or rather can't) pay the subscription fee of something like World of Warcraft. Is Oblivion a good game to go with or is there something better? f5lesnar2000yah i love Oblivion its very fun
If you are huge fan of RPGs you may be disapointed with Oblivion. At first I loved the game like everybody else, then I noticed something. As your charater got strong, so did everything else in the game. No matter where you were, the enemies were always getting stronger. The game just kept getting more and more challenging to the point where it was impossible.
For all of your leveling up you never really get to feel big and badass like in almost every other RPG on the market. Instead you always feel like you are struggling to complete quests.
Personally Oblivion isn't that fun anymore because of that. I have decided to download some mods and play the game, but so far it hasen't helped.

Did you make a new character or keep playing with your old one?
Most of the problems like level scaling can be fixed with mods. Mods are the best part about Oblivion.

Almost everything does stop leveling with you eventually. In fact, the whole deal with leveled enemies is overstated; very few enemies do level with you and are at a set level of power. New, more powerful enemies do appear as you become stronger, but only a few continue tolevel upas you do (ogres, for example, along with some quest-specific enemies). By the time you get to levels in the 40's, provided you didn't level up poorly (and especially if you don't mind power-leveling), you can beat the crap out of just about all enemies.
I fully understand you not liking that the array of enemies you face continue to get stronger for a while as you progress. Try mods like Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul if you want something different.
In Oblivion, using a skill means it will rise over time.
So if you could use a skill on a dummy and find a place to give you a hit when you want, you could max your character without exiting the training room ever (this doesn't exist in the basic game as far as I can tell).
Some peoples love the "increase of what you train" mentality, other find it a chore and unecessarily bound to realism rather then fun. Raising 10 skills linked to your character means a level rise, and upon gaining a level, you get to improve 3 stats from 1 to 5 points, based on all skills increase since last level...so if you would increase every skill unrelated to your character by 5 points at every level and 1 point for each of the related skill, you would most likely have a choice of increase of 5 points in every stats, having only 3 to pick. Most peoples will only raise the unrelated skills linked to the stats they want an improvement.
The world is big, and you are totally free. Not quite lost because of the journal, but kinda lost nonetheless. Oblivion is a game you should play without taking too many breaks in between, cause if you take too many break, catching up to the stories will be hard. Thereby, Oblivion is a game which you may want to complete in a week or 2 (or more if your casual), but most importantly, you shouldn't play other games at the same time...so you can focus and understand what is going on. Skill-based developpment is ideal for soloing players, in multiplayers it would lack to have everyone be everything, but for solo, it is solid and good.
Oblivion is a terrible game. It is more of an action-adventure than it is a RPG. Heck, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has better and more well balanced "RPG elements" than Oblivion. Unless you feel like heavily modifying your game I suggest avoiding Oblivion at all costs, It is an extraordinarily boring game that isn't rewarding to play at all and really ends up going nowhere, even after you finish all the missions (they are missions, calling them "quests" would be an exaggeration).
Just get Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or The Witcher and play an enjoyable... role-playing game.foxhound_fox
That's why you shouldn't take it as a traditional RPG. It's a great action RPG. It's like taking Half-Life 2 as a nonlinear shooter and saying how much it sucks.
That's got to be the DUMBEST sentance that ive read all day !RedDanDoc

[QUOTE="rik666"]I've heard more positive things about oblivion. and and some negatives about elder scrolls. But i have played neither :)greatmax1Am i the only that sees something wrong with this post?
No, no you're not.
I say go with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. over Oblivion. Just my opinion.
Oblivion is a good game. Notice I didn't say great. It's pretty to look at, and the action and storyline are good, but it's only ok as a pure RPG. If you look up the user reviews for the game on Gamespot, you'll find plenty of commentary on its failings as an RPG. For pure RPG gaming, Morrowind was a much deeper experience. That said, if you don't mind an action/RPG hybrid, you'll probably really enjoy Oblivion, and it will provide many hours of gameplay. Plus, there are thousands of mods out there that alter the gameplay, so you can end up playing the game you want.Royas
QFT.
Morrowind is a far better, deeper, more rewarding RPG, whereas Oblivion is more fast paced and action oriented.
Do you actually like RPGs? Avoid it like the plague.
Never played an RPG in your life? It might be a decent intro to some of the concepts, but that's about it.

You're not going to find a more honest review of Oblivion anywhere else on the net.
