that seems like a small upgrade. I dont think it would be worth it unless you're getting the card for free. Personally, I would get an 8800GT if I was in your position

i'm getting it for 20$ so as you see it's nearly free. of course if i would have 300$ i would definitaly get a 8800 gt or gts but it's not too bad to get 7900gs with adding 20 bucks

...im sure you could run it on a 300watt powersupply, but i really wouldnt want to try, i would definatly upgrade your powersupply.

and here are some bench to show your increase, play around with them

dude, he is getting it for 20 bucks... and you would rather upgrade to a slower card for more money?

the 7900gs out performs the 8600gt in many benchmarks, just because its a newer card, doesnt mean its better.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=712&model2=855&chart=277.

and as for the 8800gt, the 512 meg version is running 250, he is spending 20, im sure he would love a 8800gt (i would have killed for one when i had my x800) but its (A) not even out yet and (B) 230 dollars more then the card he is getting.

The 7900GS is a underclocked version of the GT and it's only lag behind the GT bya very small margin while the 7900GT is twice as fast as the 7600GT. So hell yeh, it's definitely a worth upgrade since you only get it for $20. Btw, 300W should handle the 7900GS even though I wouldn't recommend, try to get a new PSU if you can. :)

Yeah. Seeing as how you are getting a video card for $20...use the money that you WOULD have spent buying a better card on a new power supply :D

How would you agree even when he gets the card for $20 vs the 8800GT which falls in the range of $200-$299? Plus, if he OC the 7900GS, he'll see a difference in performance going from his 7600GT to a 7900GS.

as i said above...the 7900gs is quicker is most aps then the 8600...so why would you upgrade to it for more money?

because it supports DX10? pfft, you cant use most of the DX10 features with it on a high resolution and thats when you want them used anyways.

Actually the 7900GS and 7900GT are clocked exactly the same at stock speeds. The only difference between the two is that the 7900GS has 20 pixel pipelines compared to the GT's 24.

never use toms?

why is that?

what site would you recomend for benchmarks? i only use it because it is easier to find direct comparisons there then most other places.

Toms is an ok place to look at benchmarks. There was a thread about this not too long ago. Toms covers such a WIDE range of cards that they can't retest with each new driver and everything. But that being said, it was shown that they are close to most other sites benchmarks.

They are on Cat 7.1 drivers ffs... they never update the drivers on those charts and ATi cards rely on new drivers
