Should I but a nice gaming desktop for ~1200 and a ~600 dell laptop or should I just buy a ~1200 laptop that can play games relatively well ( but not as good as the ~1200 one).

The desktop I had in mind is this: -

EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail $384.99

XTRAC Ripper Optical Mouse pad - OEM $13.99

Rosewill RP550-2 ATX12V v2.01 550W Power Supply - Retail $66.99

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model $274.99

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel $77.00

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $65.99

Saitek PZ30AU Black USB Wired Standard Eclipse Keyboard - Retail $39.99

RAZER Copperhead Blue 7 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Laser Tempest Gaming Mouse - $55.99

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black PATA Model SH-S202N - OEM

Subtotal: $1,184.90

and the laptop I had in mind was a dell vostro 1400

Buy a desktop and a cheaper laptop. Here is a good list of stuff for a desktop. Better than your list (no offence).

Gigabyte DS3L- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059&Tpk=ds3l

OCZ GameXstream 600w PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341001

XFX 8800gts (G92) 512mb- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150261

Use those as your mobo, video card, and power supply, and combine that with the other stuff in your list.

seems ok to me, but yea, you should go with 8800gts 512md. I've read it has better performance than 8800gts 640mb, its somehwere here on gamespot. And what about a monitor? because some people will tell you that resolution matters and that hardware could be a waste.

Change the PSU and the mobo on the desktop to a PC Power & Cooling 470W and the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L respectively and get the desktop, laptop wise, get something with 2GB RAM deifnitely since i doubt you're getting a XP Laptop.
