I've been using a $10 wired Microsoft optical mouse for all my games for about 6 months now. It's about as simple as mouses get, but I somehow love it. It doesn't even have side buttons, but I hate those, so it's really my perfect mouse for a tenner.

Newegg was just selling a Logitech G500 for $30, free shipping. Not sure if they're still doing it. Just make sure you get a mouse that has atleast 1600 DPI, or else it'll be a little too sluggish for shooting games.

mice*

I know that www.xoxide.com had some Razer mice on sale. They are not cheap but their lower end models are really slick and quite affordable.

Yeah, I had the same mouse for like 5 years, and I thought the same until it finally it died. So I picked up a G500, and now I really feel like I wasted 5 years of my life. The difference is HUGE. Newegg has the G500 for $35. I highly recommend. The MX 518 is a great mouse as well, but it costs more at the moment.

Without a doubt the logitech mx518. Had mine roughly 2 years or so now, still works great, i think there about £20. Buttons are really useful (especially being able to change dpi with the click of a button), the mouse has a neat design and is very reliable.

What makes the difference if I may ask? Note that I'm not too big on competitive online gaming.

Precision, feel, durability, comfort, etc. You don't need to be into competitive online gaming to get good use out of it. In fact, I'm not really into competition. I like to play multiplayer shooters sometimes, but it's just for the hell of it (I like to shoot things). I didn't get this mouse to be amazing at Quake or anything. When I first tried it out at Fry's electronics, I just fell in love with it. Just give it a try, and you'll probably see what I mean.

Will do that. I've got some money to spare, so who knows what Santa might bring. Thanks for the tip.

Yea, if anyone is in doubt, gaming mice are indeed worth it. I only have a Logitech G5, and I can't use that with all three of my computers so I'm stuck using those cheap black Microsoft optical mice. They work, but they aren't very responsive compared to my G5. Their sensitivity is a lot slower too, so altogether it makes me slower at the computer.

Just bought a Logitech M505 Wireless Laser Mouse for just $20 at best buy, and so far, it's working like a dream.

I've never used a Razer, but if the rave reviews and user comments are anything to go by, you can't go wrong with it. Personally, I'd choose a Logitech MX-518 or the IME 3.0. The lower end Razer models look good too though.
