I hate to say it but, I don't like it all that much. I have no issue with the story, graphics or anything like that, I just can't play an RPG with seemingly so little character customization.

My favorite thing about RPGs is experimenting with character builds, then replaying the game and making something unique every time. This game just lacks that entirely that I can see. I also dislike not being able to design my character at the beginning. I want to create my own story, not feel like I'm basically watching someone else's movie. This is the same reason I haven't played a JRPG since the Playstation.

I'm sure it's an amazing game in a lot of ways, just not my thing.

Thats good to know. I've had the game for a few months and haven't given it enough of a chance. I'm still in the outskirts.

Vizima is just oozing with atmosphere and so many side quests open up, though the swamp sections are bad.

There are 2 different kinds of RPG.... One that you make a character from scratch... Another that you take an existing character and play his/her life out.... Witch is of course the later....

There are also games that are in between those two. I've come to expect a certain level of customization in terms of character builds because I like to mess with stats, abilities and gear. When I went to meditate for the first time my first reaction to what I saw was "meh". This is the same reason I didn't care that much for Mass Effect, the customization was just too simplified.

You can customize Geralt's Stats, Spells and have different gear....as well as create potions and stuff using alchemy... it just doesn't have the whole change hair, eye colour etc from other RPGs...

Really like it but I too hate the fact that theres near to no customization. I dont know why but I was addicted to that damn dice game. lol.

I'll be honest and say that The Witcher isn't for everybody, some people will play it and go 'This is it? This isn't good at all" which is fine, you will probably never like the game.

I loved the setting....the Witcher Race....the voice acting...the characters.... what drove me away from the game (apart from lack of game time) is the combat, it was a bit too repetitive for me.... Also, I could not get comfortably into any of the cameras....each one had an issue with me....

I found the combat to be quite fun, better than DA:O IMO, The Witchers combat system was very fluid and dynamic, you could go from walking around to combat and it felt very natural. In DAO I felt combat ruined the immersion whereas with The Witcher the combat helped the immersion. Also the camera was great, I feel like more RPG's will be made with a OTS camera instead of the classic isometric, it just felt so natural and again helped immersion.

But this is my point, some people may find certain elements of The Witcher to be brilliant while others find those elements to be problems. It is a love it or hate it game.

I don't like designing my character in RPGs, if I can get a cool looking character designed by professionals then I'd rather have that.

I couldn't get into it, I really need to try it again.

The bad animations and very boring combat (I don't find clicking in a specific sequence fun at all) pulled me away from the game, but I loved the characters and storyline.

I find that I am much more absorbed into games when I can design my character. It feels more like a projection of myself, which gets me into the role playing aspect a lot more.

if you dont like geralts appearance you can use a mod called "dopplegangers essence". It let you plays as any humaniod character in the game. Also how can anyone say the build customisation is shallow / lacking in the Witcher? Have you even seen all the talent trees? Btw there are 5 different spells which dont open up until the 2nd chapter at the earliest.

I've seen the trees, there really isn't a lot of meat there. You're pretty much limited to a guy with a sword and a handful of spells.

I enjoy the ability to have entirely different playstyles through specializations in different types of magic with a large number of different spells, different melee weapons, ranged weapons, stealth abilities, etc. This is pretty standard now in western rpgs now and something I can't do without anymore personally.

I can understand those who cannot enjoy games like The Witcher or Gothic coz there are no customizations. I have games that I just can't play, even though I know they are good...mainly because I just couldn't relate to the fixed protaganist at all or even tolerate them. TBH i feel that it is stupid on my part coz I'm limiting my game experience that way...but then there are sooo many games to choose from :) That said, The Witcher and Gothic are some of my favourite RPGs ever.

Feels like IVe been going back to it for years and years, and never get past the swamp part lol.

You need to let your mind mold itself into that of Geralt. Just pretend you're him, that's what RPG's are all about after all.

I use to think like that before but now I really enjoy character customization. Of course, there is the exception for games like Mass Effect series where I highly prefer the "default Shepard." :P

You need to use alchemy on your sword to increase it's damage output. Also keep healing yourselve and your mana to keep using shock spells to keep the other dogs away.

Just google it and you will find out that you need a special oil to grease your sword with.

It makes it so you can hit the Beast easier.

Just kill all the smaller green ones and then go after the boss. He may try sending more green ones at you and you will have to rinse and repeat. Unless you can use your magic to knock him out and one shot him.

To be honest, I didn't have any difficulty in defeating any of The Witcher's creatures and enemies. The game is on the easy side. Just keep on connecting your wave of attacks. It's a really easy fight. When you come across multiple enemies, make sure to change your stance to group stance and again, connect your attacks.

Try using the Full Combat Rebalance mod and you will have some challenges.

You will die in seconds on the Beast with that mod unless you are fully prepared.

Also those dam bloodsuckers in the swamp will one hit kill you when they explode if you are not far enough away after you defeat them.

I can't wait for The Witcher 2. I heard it will carry over some of my choices in the first.

I got it cheap in the steam sale but don't like it either. Perhaps if I put some effort into it I might end up liking it, but I've always got something else more enticing I'd rather play.

as someone already said, it's not great until you get to vizima, then the investigation gets interesting, the characters are more interesting the choices more serious etc. and the combat etc gets better and better. i advise you play it on hard, then you need to work positioning and alchemy more. i myself just started it for the 2nd time 3 days ago, and as i remembered it was boring til vizima. and on hard mode i'm enjoying the combat waaay more.

just in case it isn't clear (i joke), it's just way better when you get to vizima, everything is more in depth and just plain better.

Use the magic skill where you blow air and use it on the little fires that spawn the lesser hellhounds. It puts the fires out.

i tried about 10 times to kill the hellhound, then i used the aard and got lucky, it stunned it. a great help in combat is to double tap a direction key, so geralt jumps over his oppenents head or pirouhettes to the side, it gives you way better positioning.

yeah it's excellent, but don't judge it til you finish the sections in the outskirts.
