Hi, all.  I need some advice on the performance of these two cards and how much of an improvement each are over a Radeon X800.  I only have AGP slot so I'm looking for a minor upgrade for the time being until I'm ready for a total overhaul sometime later this year.  I'm running a P4 3.4 gig (single core) and 2 gigs of RAM.

Radeon

Nvidia

I wasn't able to find any current information on the performance improvement over my existing card and I'd appreciate advice on whether its worth the price to upgrade.  Thanks.

The x1950 will kill that card. And you will see an improvement, but you won't if you upgrade to the 6800.

It would be foolish to spend that kind of money on a 6 series card. Look at a 7 series. I disagree that you wouldn't see a performance increase with the 6800, but it wouldn't be enough of an increase to merit 160 clams. If you don't mind spending as much as that x1950 costs, you could get a very nice high 7 series Geforce card (which would be my recommendation).

The highest Nvidia AGP card right now is the 7600GT, which the X1950Pro is much better than.

i thought the 7800GS was the best nvidia AGP card....anyways the x1950 beats both the 7800GS and 7600GT.

Great. Thanks, all, for your replies. I actually did find a 2 month old review of the True Color X1950. I saw that having enough wattage on the 12V rail can be an issue, but my Antec 480 Neopower can handle it, I believe. I just really want to max out titles like FEAR and CoH, especially and be ready for Hellgate and Bioshock. I know that Crysis will still bring any component in my rig to its knees, but with that little bit more juice I could get out of the X1950, I could at least run it. Thanks again.

That single-core processor is going to be the big thing holding you back in future games. Still, your processor isn't horrible, and you should be okay to run the games. And I'd say it's a good bet that your power supply can handle that card, unless you've got a ton of hard drives or something.
