Ok, so yesterday I bought Viva Pinata and played it for 1 1/2 to 2 hours yesterday. When I got off the game, I checked my GPU Temp and it said the maximum temp my GPU reached was 96C! I'm using an XFX HD 5770 at stock settings and the highest I've ever seen my GPU go is 80C. Does Viva Pinata put a lot of strain of GPU or something? Normally I don't play games for that long at a time, but 96C just seems ridiculous for Viva Pinata. The only thing I could think of is my CPU cooler has 2 120mm fans and one is blowing in the direction of the GPU and are roughly 6" away from each other. Could that be what's causing this?

No, don't fiddle with manual fanspeed, overriding the default fanspeed will only make matter worce.

Hello Swehunt,same case here.

I am using the Hd4850 in my 2nd PC and adjusted the fan speed to 60% In Ati Catalyst Control Centre to get the temperatures down from 98-99degrees to 90-91.Is doing that not OK?

Could be that Viva Pinata has no FPS cap. You tried an FPS limiter on it yet? What are your max temps while playing other games?

Your problem is most likely not the fan-speed, this is my point, your card was manufatured in a particular way and with particular drivers to keep your GPU in safe temperatures, if it's overheating the problem isn't caused by the fan spinning to slow it's because something is wrong.

The Auto setting on your card should have full controll of the fan up to 100%, your infact setting the fan @ a lower speed than it could under auto settings. So manually fix'ing the fanspeed isn't going to help with high temperatures, it's just a way of fooling yourself as the card run less hot wile it's not stressed to max.

With temperatures of 98c something is malfunktion, maybe to little airflow or to much dust in the cooler, better to adress the problem than "Fix'ing" the symptom instead.

Yes, it's "ok" to set the fanspeed but i'd rather see you adress the problem than running around it, I know I would feel much safer if i knew I had no problem with my stuff. ;)

Actually I tried cleaning the Gpu and even reapplied AS5 paste on it's heatsink and temperatures dropped from say 98 to 87-88 and then went to 90-91.So I thought I required a custom cooler for the single-slot HD4850 but later decided it would be a bit of waste of money. So I got myself a GPU?Cpu upgrade and relegated the HD4850 to my old pc with athlon x2 4600+,which is running Xp.It has a different case but the 4850 still fetches same temperatures.

~90c shouldn't cause any problems that isn't dangerously high, 98-99c is however as it's on verge to the throthling/emergency shutdown. ;) The singleslot coolers was never the best solution i agree on that but they were ment to run in thoose temps (~80-90c) still almost 100c is to much. I guess you did what you can do as far as the graphic card goes, but the temperature inside the case then? a good 20-30c would be optimal in the case.

Well, it wasn't an airflow problem. My HAF 932 has more than enough fans and wasn't dusty at all. I just put my 2nd 5770 in my case for crossfire and played Viva Pinata for about an hour. Max temp on the main card was 70C, secondary was 58C. Everything's perfectly fine. Strange. Oh and for the person wondering if Viva Pinata had an uncapped FPS, it was in fact capped at 60 fps.

groowagon

I almost always set my fan speed for my single slot 8800gt to 100% when playing games.

It usually stays around 75C when gaming on new games and the highest I see it go is around 82C in a game.

I have the BFG OC1....too bad they went out of business. Good thing I got my power supply replaced from them early this year. I purchased the BFG 8800gt OC in a package deal with a power supply back in 2007.

It is still running strong with no problems.

I even OC mine for games that benefit a lot from it.

If your GPU was too hot then you would get aritfacts or it would crash....if none of those are happening then the GPU is not TOO hot. There is no harm in lowering the temps but dont feel like you NEED to reduce them.

Daytona_178

The hotter a GPU is running at the shorter it's lifespan will be.

At such high temps artifacts may occur much sooner.

It can greatly effect the soldier points too.

True that...

Ived always had overheating problems with my gtx285...And i always run with my fan at 100%...

As for the artifacts...yeah this part is also true... i saw some recently when i was playing Dirt...my card is almost 2 years old...and i dont know how much more it will survive...
