Graphic cards questions-new to PC gamingOkay, my mom got rid of all my console stuff while I was in a "special" school (don't ask) in Utah (lamest state EVER)for two years, so I'm way out of the loop and getting interested in PC games now that Starcraft II is coming and I want to play stuff like Guild Wars and other new PC games. The problem is, I have never really learned about what stuff I need as far as graphics cards. I always used computers for other stuff, like starcraft, chatting, schhol, web games, etc. So, I have no idea if a Dual 512MB NVidia® GeForceTM Go 7900 GS - SLI Enabled card is over kill, or if I should just stick with dual 256 MB or what. I just have no idea what all the stuff in the name means. And I want the card to last. I'd rather not have the bare minimum fo rnew games and have it be obsolete within a year. Any help here? I don't want to waste money or underspend, either. Any help would be appeciated.

Instead of getting two 7900s, just get an 8800GTS 640MB (or 8800GTX of you have the money) which is DX10 ready.

wouldn't that be less memory if I get two 512's? Help me understand the whole memory thing or graphics cards. I understand normal RAM, but what's the difference between that and GPU memory?

the video memory is where the card stores information for textures, antialasing, and ansiotropic filtering. Generally speaking, the more memory the better, but its not as big a deal as the chipset of the card. In most cases your not going to notice a large performance difference between the 256 mb and 512 mb Geforce go 7900gs, (which i have and love). Also, for sli, you have to think of the memory as seperate between the cards, since one card cant access the memory of the other card.

If you can, get the 8700m part, its faster than the 7900gs and is dx10 ready.

so the 7900 can't use DX10 at all? Because that's like the best card I could find for laptops

Only the 8 series cards have DX10 support. 7900 is a DX9 card.
