ok, a while back, my uncle gave me a box full of computer stuff. in it, theres this looks like never used graphics card. but, i can't find anything that says what model it is. all i know is that its an ATI Radeon and that it was made in 2004.

how can i find out what model it is?

and, is it better than the default graphics card i have in my computer?

my current one is a Intel(R) 82815 Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation) (Intel(R) 82815).

Im not really sure how you can tell by just looking at it but if it was made or bought in or around 04 then it is most likely AGP or PCI. If it is AGP then i think it should have a somewhat shorter connector than a PCI would. Also is it passively cooled? I used to have a PCI 9200 that was passively cooled, of which if it is PCI then it wont be any better. AGP would probably be better but your comp may not even have an AGP slot.

The problem with GPU z is that it wont tell you what it is until you install it and he may not have the right connector type.

Take a picture and show us, that might help (we can at least tell you what interface the card uses). Or look for a smallish sticker on the card that may list the model type, could be on the back or front of the card.

Yeah i fubared up and didnt read he hadnt plugged it in yet.

Get out a tape measurer. If the connector with the gold contacts is 3 inches long, from one , from first contact to the last, its a AGP connector.

If its 3 and 3/8th of a inch, its PCI.

Look CLOSELY on the card. Do you see a long set of digits started with "102"? If so, type it out for us. It might not be 102 if it was just powered by ATI, but not built by them. Like how evga makes nvidia cards, but ATI did make a entire video card by themselves, and also had resellers use their chip and make their own card.

Agreed, most will have a model number sticker, although some of those are occasionally reused.

Here's a diagram of the three recent video edge connector arrangements:

ok, i found out what it is. (i found the package it came in in the box.)

its a Radeon 9200 128M

no idea what that means, but, would it let me play games like crysis or something? or portal?

edit: crap. on the card itself, i looked closer at the sticker on the back.

it says that its an Radeon 7500 64MDDR

i guess thats a bad thing...

The two are practically the same thing, the cheapest that ATI had available in each of 2002 and 2003. The 8500 was the better one in 2002, and the 9200 was sort of a detuned version of that, so it had Dx8 capability, while the 7500 was only Dx7, but both were just too slow to waste time on from a gamers' point of view. I was curious about ATI and Sapphire codes, and looked at an X800 Pro card I have here that started acting badly last summer, so was replaced.

It has a label for an X300 attached to the back. Weird.

Yes that card is atleast better than your integrated Intel graphics. (I believe)

Of course not. TF2 requires something decent. You can look up the requirements. The only reason either one would be "better" is simply the extremely old and weak chip that Intel provides. ATI and nVIDIA offer onboard chips that blow the 9200 away (if it actually had been one of those).

Didn't you read what I wrote about the worst Radeon from 2002?

Given that a Radeon 7500 was the bottom end in 2002, I would say that you would have to restrict the games to either "casual" types, MMOs, and/or the games that are at least six years old. Seems pretty clear to me.

82815? 815? Isn't that an old P3 chipset?

There's more wrong with your computer than just the video card, if that's the case...lol.

Major edit: Shoot, that was off. Sorry about that. I was remembering 440 chipsets.

Had we been discussing a desktop, I'm almost certain that Intel wasn't including onboard video for those. You had to get an SiS or VIA chipset back then to get IGPs included (for desktops). At least, that's the way I recall things from back then. The particular 82815 initialy described by the OP was an old laptop, and it was at least relatively possible to swap VGAs in the old laptops.

I had a Dell Latitude I gave to my daughter in law, with a P-II / 266 MHz CPU in it, and a discrete VGA that was replaceable.

Nope, it appears to have been a P4 chipset part all along.

Remember, back when P-IIIs were the top of the line, I'm almost certain that Intel wasn't including onboard video. You had to get an SiS or VIA chipset back then to get IGPs included. At least, that's the way I recall things from back then.

Just looked it up "on the Wikipedias."

The i815 is indeed a P3 chipset, and some versions of it did include onboard Intel graphics.

Well you could see an increase in performance with the latest drivers, but it will "work" with just generic drivers.

Graphics systems always work better when matched to the correct drivers.

Windows XP probably included ATI's own drivers, although likely not specific ones. Something of a conflict is showing up, since the VGA wasn't identified as being a Mobile 7500, and laptop cards of the P-II/ P-III era weren't easily swapped around (more modern laptops are even less adaptable), so a question occurs to me.

Are there in fact two really old computers, a P-III laptop, and an equally elderly desktop as well?

No chance. The actual game does require at least Dx9 capability, they claim, although by saying that a GF3/Ti will work, they are really saying Dx8. Dx9 is GF 6***. The Radeon 9*** cards, Dx9 excluding the 9200/ 9250, are from 2003, which is three generations backwards (GF3 and Dx8 would be five generations backward).

Minimum Specification

Dude zymn, is this honestly a joke. You think a video card, that numerous times you've been told is old and can't run Crysis, yet you persist. I smell something fishy. NO YOU CANNOT RUN CRYSIS, hell you can't run any game good from the past 6 years. Why don't you get A JOB, EARN SOME MONEY (around $1000) and get yourself a decent computer.

What are your specs anyways? A P2? or a P3?

sigh... no one seems to be direct to you, ok here it is

halo runs fine it isnt a current gen game, also that card is NO WHERE CLOSE TO BEING AS POWEFUL AS A 8800GT! in other words, NO CRYSIS for you with that card not only that but you need a much more powerful processor, and more RAM, i know you dont know much about hardware, but just because its better than your onboard doesnt mean you can run every game out there, if its already having issues with farcry... that tells you something there. it is old and outdated by a couple of generations to lazy to count im going to estimate, 8 generations behind? could be more

you can play games made from 2002 and under, lucky if any current gen games even play, but if you dont believe me try downloading Battlefield 2 demo, wont even load the menu screen.

its a rediculous question to ask if u can play crysis now cause of that card... its like asking people could you hike the world's tallest mountain using only a bike... its impossible, you cant, even though there wouldnt be grip logically. also logically you dont meet the requirements to play the game so would be the same thing as trying to bike a mountain (sorry if i dont make sense im tired)

thats not a graphics card you have now its a substitute for a graphics card built into the motherboard ie Integrated graphics, and will have no chance at playing games.

Right. At 320 by 200 pixels and 16 colors, it will CRAWL, it won't "run". Half Life 2 is a fast action shooter that needs to zip along in the 50-70 FPS range, and with no fewer than 1280 by 960 pixels resolution, not merely 4-6 FPS at some extra low resolution!
