Put it this way: people are shallow at best. Graphics are to adults, like what candy is to a baby. its like "oooooooooo gwaaaaaficcccccccccsssss". I love my grapx and cant be playing a game these days that looks like a snes game. I need high resolutions and texture madness!!Â
Its like people were certain that hdtvs would do nothing for them, but you dont realise it until you have the hardware in your home. None grapx whores are the ones that dont have a gaming pc machine, therefore cannot see the visual brilliance that is great graphics...its all about evolution imho. Do u think oblivion would have been that great if it hadnt been for its great grapx? Graphics immerse you and are necessary in games where you need to be immersed...IE condemned. If that game didnt have the graphics it did have, it wouldnt have been as scary to knock the crap outta someone with a plank of wood. Realism = great grapx, and i think it really depends on how much it takes for you to be immersed deeply into a game. :DÂ

Its funny you mentioned Nintendo, cuz I just realized that Ive played more duckhunt and mario bros over the past month on my roommates HDTV than I have xbox360. Pretty much the only 360 game Ive enjoyed is Gears of War and my friend and I beat that in a weekend.
Still, I play waaaaay more PC than I do nintendo still. Im just saying, its funny thats all. A 20 year old console getting more action than a year-old console on the latest TV.

If game-play is good i like play but if it have really good graphic it is so better to play.snofelj
Â
Well said.Â
Good graphics are like good art. You notice.
Â
Buyin a new graphics card next week actually. 8800 WOO!Â
Am I the only one who is a straight-up, unabashed Graphics Whore?
Now, I won't play a game if it doesn't also have fun gameplay and/or a great storyline, but I refuse to play games that are ugly.
Sort of like with other forms of entertainment: I don't like ugly characters on my TV shows or in the movies I watch. I want my female (and male) actresses to be hot! Sure, this makes the shows unrealistic, but if I want to get a dose of real-world ugly, I'll just head to my local Walmart. You don't see my ugly mug on TV - why should I have to see yours?
So I say:
Shallow gamers of the world, Unite!
ALL HAIL KILLER GRAPHICS!!!
Love,
Jack(A True Graphics Whore)

Definitely. But I have a sucky ass graphics card.Â

Awesome - the 8800 rocks. I bought the 640 MB version, and it's meeting expectations: I crank all of my games up to the max (except that lousy, no good STALKER game - I like the game a lot, and the graphics are great, but what a freakin resources hog!!!).Â
Being a wargamer and an RPG player I will say no. Anyways presentation, music, sound and artstyle are much more important. Graphics can help in those aspects but they don't need to be a 10.
Gameplay matters obviously but I am also a graphics whore......The game can be the best one ever made but if it's from like 2002 then forget it.The only games I play that aren't hi-tech in the graphics department are games that are 2d, at least most 2d games can still have crisp looking images where as a 3d game with low end graphic looks horrible.
Example 1.Defcon:Everybody Dies has nothing spectacular about its graphics but they still look nice because there is no ****ty looking textures or terrain; just nice crisp and clean images.
Example 2.Diablo 2; one of the most bad ass games I've ever played.Try 800x600 on a 19'' monitor and see how long you last, I cant even make it 5 minutes.Quite sad actually since there hasn't been a game worthy to take it's spot yet IMO.
Play Medieval 2:Total War, then try playing Shogun and tell me that the graphics change doesn't bother you .
I think it depends on what kind of game it is. When it comes to FPS and TFPS then yes, the better the graphics the more realistic the experience, and that's what I enjoy about FPS games.
When it comes to RTS I don't mind either way.
And RPG, yes and no. Alot of the greatest are old and are still amazing. But I also like to look at a beautiful world that can suck me in.
I would say i'm a hybrid, although I'm probably a wh*ore too, but that's besides the point!!mismajor99
LOLÂ
No, I think gameplay is the most important part of a game. The graphics can come second, I've never heard of a game with awesome gameplay getting a bad review just because it has bad graphics, but many games with good graphics have gotten less than 5 on their reviews. Also, a game with good gameplay can last for a long time, while just having good graphics might last less than a year, when better graphics come out.
But, it also depends on the game, good graphics are necessary for FPS, but RTS the graphics doesn't really matter.
Â
My PC is up to date, still play ET, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft. I don't mind most games unless they have really offending designs. ChinoJamesKeene
Then you, sir, are not a Graphics Whore.
I cant choose after playing games with beter graphics it kinda drives me crazy to see older graphics because they look kinda choppy to me:? Snipe_You_Out
Congratulations: You're a Graphics Whore!
Â
And a BIG CONGRATS to all of us GWs here, who are FINALLY getting the recognition we deserve. It's been a long battle, but after 600 votes, the results are in... GWs FTW by a 10 point spread.
Â
WOOT WOOT!!!!
Well, Sof2 is still one of the most fun games I've ever played, nothing quite like getting a shot gun and blasting bad guys in half then watching thier guts spew out on the floor whilst they cry in pain. The graphics are dated BUT they sure are detailed...fantastic stuff.
and YES, I am a graphics whore.
Graphics are like chicks, if they dont look good, I wont waste my time (unless the game play is SUPER SUPER good ;-)walshmaine
CLA$$ ACT :P
I'd be lying if I said I'm not a sucker for pretty graphics. I wouldn't spend $400 on a new state of the art video card every two years if graphics weren't important to me. I can tolerate ugly graphics in classic games (although I'll probably end up spending a lot of time tweaking them to make them look their best), but when new games have ugly graphics I'm completely turned off. That's one of the big things that completely turned me off with the Nintendo Wii. Great controller, but atrocious graphics. I seriously wanted to choke when I saw how bad Zelda looked on the Wii. But don't get me wrong, I also need good gameplay and a compelling story to keep me interested, which is why games like FEAR and Doom 3 didn't do too much for me. I basically just used those games to show off and benchmark my PC and not much else. When a game comes out that has beautiful graphics and great gameplay like Half-Life 2 or FarCry, I'm in gaming nirvana.
But I completely agree with your original argument. People who say graphics don't matter are deluding themselves. They just don't want to sound shallow.
What's with the stupid posts that go like "if you have two similar games, one with crappy graphics and one with beautiful ones, what will you choose?" Of course I'll choose the beautiful ones. So? It's not that people that dont consider themselves to be graphic whores (like me) HATE pretty graphics. I like pretty graphics. I just won't mind playing a game even if its graphics are bad.
Say, a guy loves FPS games. I give him duke nukem (which is a very good 12 years old shooter so it has bad graphics, and about 15*10 resolution). If he refuses to play it only because of the quality of the graphics because he is "spoiled" with new titles - well, you got yourself a graphics whore.
I, for instance, played hitman blood money (which had excellent graphics), and after beating it, didnt mind to play gabriel knight 1 (which is 15 years old) - I guess that puts me in the 'dont care about graphics' category.
The problem is, in this thread the deffinition of a graphics whore is simply playing games with good graphics, or having a computer capable of playing games at max graphical settings :Pdnuggs40
There are no problems with this thread... only winners (GWs FTW!!!) and losers (GP FTL!!!).

I meant to say the problem with that particular argument within the confines of this thread :PÂ
And yes, the GW's are winner! Can I still hang out even though I am part of the losing team?

All we ask is that you forever recognize who won this Battle.

On a more serious note, how many people do you think are regular posters here - have we got most of them to vote? I'd like to see a higher turn out.
We're all graphics whores. People who say gameplay is everything and graphics, just haven't come out of the closet yet.
If graphics didn't matter, they wouldn't be getting better at such a fast pace.

They matter for sales, because most of the money that game companies make don't come from the pockets of real gamers. Real gamers are a very rare breed, a minority, and most money comes from the same sort of people Hollywood thrives on. I bought a PSP just to play NES and SNES games, and it gets far more of my time than my PS2 or Gamecube. In fact, I haven't even bought a PS3 or either XBox because I see no worthwhile exclusives, just the Wii because Wii sports is fun as hell, even if it looks really bland and "kiddy".
Â
As long as there are people that still read books, there will be people who don't care about graphics beyond the ability to represent entities.Â

I read books constantly - for school, and pleasure. I love russian lit, horror novels, books on philosophy and science.
And I am the Poster Child of the GWs.
Explain that contradiction, my fine-feathered friend.Â
I think that it is foolish to say "Graphics dont matter"
Of course graphics matter.
That said, good graphics do not depend on poly count to me. They depend on a style, making the game look good by interesting use of colours, lighting etc. I play lots of old games, but I cannot stand to play ugly games. Ugly games are characterless, horrible messes. Ugly graphics can really spoil a gameplay experience by barring the user from being immersed in a world- same goes for sound and of course, gameplay.

Are yes but thats were graphics and gameplay part. Good graphics are a big part of games, but not all games. Games where you have to follow a story or get immersed in the experience require good graphics while games that are just pure pick up and play gameplay don't need this as your not trying to get immersed in an experience your just trying to play a game thats simple.
