After much reading here on the GS forums about the heated debates going on over which PC title will come out as top dog in this stellar year for games I thought to myself what a tough job the reviewers are going to have. I haven't always agreed with the GS picks but the great job they did every year really put some perspective on each nominations best and worse attributes. 2007 is crammed packed with no less than 6 titles scoring over 9.0 and over 15 scoring 8.0 or better! What makes the GS staff's job even more difficult is their new rating system only allowing incremental scores of .5 points. Reviewers scores are only a part of what is taken into consideration but I still feel the new scoring system kind of handcuffs this elements importance in determining the GOTY. I have my fingers crossed that a PC title will take overall GOTY title as it's been since 2004 with WoW that a PC game garnered top spot. I'd love to be a fly on the wall over at GS while discussions and voting is underway, maybe GS will bless us with a feature article or video that shows us all the hard work and considerations they take into account when choosing GOTY.

Thanks GS for all the terrific reviews and good luck with the GOTY voting.

I'd love to see a PC game take GOTY. I think one should :)

Unfortunately SMG (Wii) is most likely title IMO at the moment though, it has such broad, mass market appeal compared to PC titles (Crysis, World in Conflict, etc)

But we'll see...

Personalyl I think Halo 3 will take. I hate hate hate Halo...but this game is so preposterously over-rated that I think it'll win.

If Halo 3 wins GOTY then GS will lose what little credibility they have left.

Which PC game should be GOTY? Crysis? I think it's PC GOTY because it pushes the limits, but overall GOTY: SMG, BioShock EP2 or Portal IMO

No PC exclusive

I think that Bioshock should win, but it will be overshadowed by all of the other amazing titles that just came out. I think it will be a total toss up, and almost any game that wins will deserve it on some level.

I think either Crysis or World in Conflict should win GOTY, however it is extremely unlikely that WiC will. I'd say Crysis has a good chance but they will probably choose a console game just so they can keep the attention of all the 12 year olds.

I really can't remember of any year when I agreed with more than one or two choices (usually with none) made by GS about the GOTY awards. I'm sure this year will be no different. Some crappy console game or fps will probably take the title.

Gamespot had no credibility. For one thing amazing games that are perfect are still not given tens(Cod4) because they are too "short." Cod4 could make it. Other than that I'd say Crysis. Too bad I can't play either cuz my comp sucks.

Actually I completely forgot about Call of Duty 4, that should definitely win if Crysis doesnt. If neither do I'm outta here lol.

Its been a good year for sure. Almost every console has a contender, mabye more than one. I think if a PC game wins it'll be Crysis, since it is the only exclusive to the pc. I do think CoD4 has a very strong chance of winning since its on every platform but the wii and is one of the best games on all 3 platforms.

I don't really see whats the big deal about this GOTY thing, i mean its fine that a game thats liked by many gets a pat on its shoulder, but so what? Not gonna change our opinion of the game.

Surely the Orange Box will be named GOTY.

This is the best value package in video game history. Though I have a sneaking suspicion they will choose Crysis...

I think the orange box is far from the best value package in video game history.

Hl2 episode2 was great, but i played it trough in one evening. Portal provided some great unique fresh gaming but was still extremely short. TF2 has a very fun theme, but i coundt play it more then a couple of hours and then id bored me.

And with leftovers such as hl2 and episode 1 that we have played, then i woundt call it that great of a pack. Maybe for people that had not played hl2 and episode 1 to begin with.

Well, by their own scoring system, the highest score given this year is a 9.5. So GOTY has to come from that batch right? I think World in Conflict should win. I think Crysis is going to win. Halo 3 wasn't the best game this year. If it wins, that's lame. It's a fun game, but it wasn't the best game this year. CoD4 cold win too.

I hope Halo3 doesn't win or else all my little faith in GS would be lost.

Crysis will probably win just because of all its hype, but I hope the Orange Box wins seeing as it came with 5 of the best games I have played in a long time.

Here's my top 4 choices on the PC that i think will make or stand a very good chance at getting the GOTY award, in no particular order.

The Orange Box - By far the best gaming package to ever be released because you get 5 top quality games all for the price of one full retail game which is great value for money. Not only that but the fact you get games that are all unique and fun means you have hours of playtime not forgetting the modding community that comes with these games. It's only downside is that the Source engine really is getting old and so the game isn't as visually appealing as some other releases this year.

Crysis - A great technical achievement and a game that will go down in gaming history as having raised the bar for visual quality like no other before it. It's wide open enviroments and solid gunplay allow the player a little more freedom in their actions and gameplay style than other games in the FPS genre which makes it all the more fun to play. Assuming your PC can actually run the game that is.

The Witcher - Probably the best RPG released this year and one that changed the style of a genre that had, in my opinion, become repetitive in style and setting. It's adult themes, dark setting and immersive and entertaining storyline really make this game stand out in the crowd and all for good reasons. I think it breaks the mold of what RPG's had fallen into over the past few years and i found it a welcome and refreshing change. It's only downside may be the fact that Western audiences will have problems with a few bits of the dialogue since its translated from Polish to English.

COD4 - A great game that delivers a truly epic and somewhat movie like experience to the player in its intense, action filled gameplay that will keep you alert from the moment you start to the moment you finish. As well as this its multiplayer is probably one of the best released this year with its amazing array of customisable features for the player to mess around with. However its linear and short single player might be the big thing holding it back from achieving a GOTY award.

I can't speak for games with GOTY potential like UT3 and the Witcher, but the only PC game I know ofwith the content and gameplay to compete for GOTY is Supreme Commander. Then again, it didn't get a very good review here, so likely it will get passed over.

of course the GOTY isnt gonna be a PC exclusive, it's gamespot... Crysis probably deserves, but it won't get it because all the console fanboys can't play it. probably most of the gamespot staff hasnt even put in a good amount of time into crysis.

What a glorious victory it will be in our war against the Fanboys if Crysis or the Orange Box (PC) gets GOTY over Halo 3.

Frightening Twist/Possibility: Orange Box on Console gets GOTY!!? I think we'd have to all leave, pack up and go to IGN for the next year.

Yet another factor GS will have to consider with PC titles I guess will be bugs and compatability issues. Off the top of my head two fabulous games which few are considering for GOTY are Gears of War for the PC which I never played on X-box but found it to be an outstanding experience but marred with so many bugs and glitches it really took a hit with reviewers and players alike. Also Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl which fared a tad better but in my eyes could have used a few more months hammering out large technical problems that really detracted from an otherwise excellent release. It's certainly been a banner year of patches and fixes as most readers here can attest to. Maybe GS should start giving out awards for this catagory maybe a "Tip of the hat" or "Wag of the finger" award. lol

Only one person so far has mentioned Supreme Commander, but that is my top choice for PC GOTY, 2007 was a great year for strategy with CnC3, SupCom + Fa, and GalCiv2 Dark Avatar, and I think SupCom reresents PC gaming better than Crysis, because it is one of the few games on the PC that would not work in its original state on a console (Crysis could be ported to a console pretty easily with, at the most, toned down graphics)

Can you really see SMG winning over The Orange Box or Crysis?

I havent played it and I don't know much about it. I've just seen some of the review scores for it. It just seems like a bit of a 'small' game to win over those two kingpins. Then again perhaps if Gamespot can't choose between the box and Crysis maybe they'll need a third party to settle the score like SMG.

Well the majority here are not really debating the top PC game, they are debating the top shooter.

I didn't include Dark Avatar because it is an expansion. Then again, PC gaming and expansions go hand-in-hand, but I still would rather give it to a full game.

agreed...three great games, short yes...but great nonetheless...especially portal and episode 2...i think episode 2 showed what a linear videogame should be,in fact episode 2 felt like a movie while i was playing it...i'm betting also on crysis or wic, although i think the latter has a small chance of winning GOTY.best year in PC gaming in a long...long time....i think we can all agree on that...:)

I think it'll go Crysis, Orange Box then WIC. That how's they've listed it on the highest rated. So looks like Crysis will be GOTY for PC. I really wanted OB to get it.

Crysis shouldn't be GOTY because it closely mimics Far Cry. Sure, graphics are great, any remember how much trash Doom 3 was? So, you've got a fun, pretty game there. World in Conflict...an rts will never win. Why? The players are what make them great and challenging. Halo 3 ehhh, too similar to Halo 2. Bioshock is a good game, but Crysis will win if an FPS takes the cake, and the cake will be a lie as it always is.

Speaking of which, the only game that has stood out with that "Why hasn't anyone made this game yet?" presence is Portal. No character, or should I say object, has jumped into the hearts of gamers faster.

Higher scores aren't what determines which game wins GOTY. In many of the previous years games that have scored lowered than others have won GOTY. Examples: The Sims (2000), GTA III (2001), World of Warcraft (2005)

I think it'll go Crysis, Orange Box then WIC. That how's they've listed it on the highest rated. So looks like Crysis will be GOTY for PC. I really wanted OB to get it. biggest_loser
When two or more games have the same score their order in the "Highest rated" category is determined by their release date. Newer games are ranked higher.

I think it's going to be between Halo 3 (fan base) vs COD 4 (great game). Two big games. If COD4, I'll count it as a PC win because IW developed it.

Ah okay thanks for that. I didn't know. So there's still a good chance OB could get it. Lets hope so aye?

If they decide to consider the Orange Box as one game then it will win I think but I believe since those games are available seperately that they won't do that. Halo 3 better not get game of the year though. That would make me really really upset. My guess is Mass Effect will get the rpg of the year award, sorrythe Witcher fans I loved the Witcher too but after beating Mass Effect there's no doubt in my mind who is taking that award.

Halo 3 will most likely get it, seeing as how that is what the majority of the gaming community wants to hear. Or they could go the page-view controversy route and name something like Zack & Wiki.

Of all the games I've played this year I'd have to say Mass Effect deserves it. It may not be so stupidly different from KotOR but when you play the game and see all the small touches it just feels that the game has had more effort put into it than any other.
I think COD4 will get it however, just because if they give it to crysis everyone will be up in arms, and if they give it to halo they'll be fanboys?
Mario galaxy is the darkhorse :P
