Well I won't reiterate my original thread starter because GS forums are already littered with abusive "Quote"rs so let me just try to derail us all back onto my original thought process if I may.
Many have risen a great point about cross platform game releases and how that may play a part in determining GOTY. Interesting to think as some have posed that Orange box or other game rooted deep into the fabric of the PC game world could usurp itself into becoming a console GOTY. Fun to imagine untill you consider one day it may happen to PC gamers "Halo 3 2008 PC GOTY"? Yikes! All imagining aside I think if a game is released on any platform it should be judged on that systems reviewing criteria. The day may come when a game releases on all major systems and sweeps all the individual platform awards.
Another point raised that I'm sure will be a heated topic of debate over at GS is how to judge a game like Orange box with it's multiple game bundle. Do they judge as a whole or in parts. Thats a tough one, and damn you valve for giving us 3 great games in one box!(2007 calender year) Who knows maybe we'll all see Portal wearing the medal. I wouldn't bet against it.
What I really need is a checklist of criteria used for every aspect of a game to judge GOTY for myself. I wish gamespot would tell us how they have done it in the past or was it just determined by two opposing reviewers "Judged on effective strikes, grappling, and Octagon controll.."
